Although I am a vegetarian, I greatly admire Dr. Grandin and her work. I disagree with killing animals, of course, but that does not mean that everyone does. The 97 percent of the population that consumes meat should at least respect the animals they are using for food, and humane slaughter methods allow them to do just that.

Temple Grandin is an intelligent woman and a genius when it comes to animal welfare!
Slaughter can be human. We don't bite it til it dies, we don't claw it til it dies and we do not strangle the Animal.
No pain, horrors, suffering. Just a blitz and no pain.
I support her. I am very into humane Slaughter.
Much better than what i have seen they do in countries like Afghanistan and such places.
Chili+eyes=Pain. Though it results in the cow moving.
    NOT humane!

We are a part of the food chain and I am glad that someone is trying to make the process of meat production more humane. I also want to point out the obvious position of our eyes...they are in the front of our head and not on the sides...we are predators. The boasted vegan acreage argument is compelling but, only possible due to the genetic manipulation of food plants and chemicals now used. Is THAT a great alternative? Clearly, we need to approach ALL food sources from a different angle.

I think it's more like she's capable of understanding how animals think. This is a very intelligent woman whose thought processes work in an unusual way. I know no disrespect is intended when people say she "thinks like an animal", quite the opposite really but that always sounded to me like her mind was more primitive than that of an average person. She's more like a veterinary psychologist, knowing what causes a cow to panic etc.

If they smell it, they don't seem to be bothered by it. My guess is they don't associate the smell with danger because of their sheltered lifestyle, or perhaps they feel more confident while grouped with other cows.
She was surprised by this, too. She's observed cows balking at a shiny stripe of floor in a blood puddle, whereas if the puddle of blood was intact, they would have ignored it.

I used to be vegan. I was obese before becoming vegan. I didn't lose any weight while I was vegan. There is plenty of vegan junk food out there. It irritates me when people promote vegetarianism/veganism as a way to lose weight and be healthy. You can have a crappy diet as a vegan. I did. You can also have a very healthy diet as an omnivore. My diet still isn't where it should be, but I probably eat more veggies now than when I was vegan.

@Majikbeemer Are you serious? The animals couldn't care less whether it's a "trick" or not. They don't have the brain capacity to think like that. All they care about is running away from things that scare them. They, among with all other living creatures, are programmed to do so. When you take away what scares them - they are no longer scared. Would you like to die scared or calm? ... I'm pretty sure the animals would like to die calm, too.

@pjorden321 Good point if you are talking about grain fed meat,...but Many parts of our country (and the world) are too arid or rocky to realistically grow plants. Grazing animals who forage for their own food can be raised in these areas where crops requiring a regular input of lots of water cannot.

@RicRagsLive No, people eat meat because it is concentrated protien and calories. We are programmed by nature to seek out richer food sources. I know I have the choice to go vegan, I choose not to because I see no logical reason, not because its what the group is doing.
    Get over yourself.

@conyelp actually many people who work in these types of places do so because they don't have many employment options. A good friend of mine had a cousin who worked as as a psychiatrist near a slaughterhouse... he said about %90 of his patients worked at the slaughterhouse and are traumatized by their work.

@ediblered I can imagine myself working at a slaughter house but I wouldn't feel like those people you describe. Remember when Temple was standing beside the cow with her hand on it's side? She said it was perfectly calm and had no idea what was going to happen to it. I could be part of Dr. Grandin's slaughter system to provide meat for us human's. Let's stop this exchange, you and I just see this differently.

Yes, you are absolutely right about the living conditions on factory farms--that's unacceptable. I was solely referring to the slaughter methods, here. I think that our next step needs to be to eradicate factory farms so that animals can have a good life AND a peaceful death. Of course, my preference would be that no one consumes animals at all, but realistically, that won't happen anytime soon. I did watch the documentary, and I agree--there's no way to justify those pigs' living conditions.

I respect this woman's work. Days of old how they killed a cow.. Sledgehammer to the head or just slit their throat..no stunning or nothing. As for the sledge? I'll assure you, it took more than just one swift shot..
I worked in food service for 11 years, the amount of meat products sold is outrageous.
Worked in two restaurants that had a "Wing night", and both places EVERY Tuesday they sold AT LEAST 14X's 40Lb. cases of chicken wings.

I avoid meat as well. However, people are not going to suddenly stop eating meat anytime soon. In the meantime, if you read her books or studies you would see what a HUGE difference she has made to the animals who are killed. Which is worse? Being tortured then killed? Or being calm, then killed By ignoring her contributions you do nothing to help the billions of animals that are slaughtered each year for food. She has made a huge difference.

  • @futurehistory2110
    @futurehistory2110 11 років тому +1

Yes but what about how their treated beforehand? Perhaps humane animal slaughter, in that split second of been killed and few minutes of been brought in, is justifiable but what about their lives beforehand? I'm mainly thinking of those animals on factory farms. Here's a documentary I found about a common factory farm, trying to glamorize themselves ---> watch?v=88gBI5NYANU But still how could one justify the space these pigs live in? Which is common for them? That's the real problem w/ it.

I for myself found that when I tried going vegan, had no energy to get through my day. So after six months of trying, put some meat back in my diet and have never felt better. Also, I'm a horse trainer, with exposure to cows, so I know first hand that our teeth and GI tract are NOTHING like theirs.

According to Leviticus, the "big guy upstairs" loves slaughtered bull burnt to cinders on an altar, with lots of fat and blood.
"He shall kill the bull before the Lord ... Then the priests, Aaron's sons, shall lay the parts, the head, and the fat in order on the wood that is on the fire upon the altar; but he shall wash its entrails and its legs with water. And the priest shall burn all on the altar as a burnt sacrifice, an offering made by fire, a sweet aroma to the Lord.

We don't "need" to do a lot of things that we do. Whether or not something is necessary doesn't automatically make it moral or immoral.
Using a computer, despite its destruction to the ecosystem, could be considered an immoral practice but doesn't NECESSITATE it as such.

Well, if it's increasing the efficiency of slaughter, then it seems...I don't know, I don't want to say "counterproductive" because I guess it's a "good" thing to reduce suffering, but I just get a sense that she's devoting her time to something that doesn't address the core issue.

I've never understood the position of being a vegan on the basis of not harming living beings. Flora are living beings also, and if certain resarch on their ability to percieve the world around them is at all credible, then they suffer as much as fauna do when being harvested. I'm not trying to be a jerk here- I actually prefer to kill wheat 'cause I like the taste of cereal for more than any kind of meat out there- I'm just curious as to your thoughts on this matter. thanks

@jmdnarri That's fair. At the same time My original comment had nothing to do with nutrition. I was saying killing is killing. It's not humane to do it. And since I have never felt better being vegan I can't relate to your story.I think it's a good way to avoid having any part in the cattle industry. Since it causes a huge amount of pollution. and is inefficient since it takes 10 times more food in VS out. Oh and heart disease which is the number one killer is caused by a high meat diet.

Most people eat meat and will carry on doing so. Some feel guilty and some don't give a dam. Although vegetarianism and veganism is growing it will be a long time, if ever before everyone follows suite. I've shown Meet your Meat and distributed Why Vegan brouchures downtown. I also help the CCFA. Last year I gave out post cards to try and improve standards for transporting animals. Some told me they could never stop eating meat but thought animals should be treated better.

The True spirit of he Lent season fasting....un-pained food is zero Karma. If we discover a way where animals are rendered painless before eating them, we become Hu-mane. For instance, in the natural world male-Lions (who 99% of their life) do not kill to eat (it is the lionesses that mostly go hunting), have grown a kingly-Mane(sounds similar to HuMane?)...besides,unlike other predators lions do not start eating the animal till it is totally dead(atleast 9 in 10 hunts)...As Humane-humans, we ought to follow Dr.Temple-Grandin who is advocating painless-methods of handling animals.

Even I can appreciate de Grandin’s ideas, still the concept of humane slaughter of an animal individual that doesn’t want to die does exist!!!
The most respect we can have for animals is to let them be in stead of killing 74 billion each year, it’s crazy and absolutely immoral to do because we can live and thrive easy live a life on vegan 🌱 lifestyle!!!

I am a human being living in an industrialized society. I am expected to devote 10 hours of my waking life to working my job (including preparation and travel). I find it VERY difficult to find adequate sources of protein to pursue an active, physically fit lifestyle, without animal protein.
Give me a reliable source of all essential amino acids and nutrients to build muscle (yes, some us actually want to have MUSCLES on our bodies, not just be flabby, skinny reggaetons) and I will be the first to wholeheartedly adopt it.
I do not like mass animal husbandry, nor do I like monocultured crops artificially fertilized.
AFAIC we can change our society to one where machines do the production of consumer goods in factories and the people spend their lives growing, preparing and processing foodstuffs in an ecologically responsible way - by HAND.
It is going to take time to get there and idiot vegans lecturing about how bestialish it is to eat meat are just that - idiot vegans. Offer some suitable alternatives or SFTU

+Tom Nicholson Hey Tom :) Sorry to hear you've found it difficult to find good sauces so far. Have you already found your favourites? I just thought I would leave some suggestions, just in case. I eat a high protein vegan diet and i include the following elements as the basis of my daily which make getting enough protein super easy. Breakfast: including oats pumpkin seeds nuts soy milk and flax (I have a big tub of cereals all mixed up in the cupboard). Alternatively, Tufu scramble (not unlike scrambled eggs but higher in protein and other nutrients and less saturated fat and cholesterol. smoothie with oats mid morning. Lunch including 1-2 cans kidney beans or similar with a grain (I bulk make lunches for the week, either cold or frozen). Dinner including one of the following: lentils, pulses, minced soy beans, tofu tempeh, seitan or TVP chunks with a grain. Snacks are often based on beans, mushy peas (17g protein for a little can) or hummus and I like to makes healthy sweet snacks/bars out of nuts, seeds and blended beans or oats and dried fruit too, there are lots of these recipes online and again easily made in bulk. These are also comercially available (nakd bars, etc) I also eat a very high volume of green vegetables. The actual volume you eat will be CONSIDERABLY more ie you;re going to use a mixing bowl to eat out of and your calorie intake will likely be higher, but you wont get flabby and you will be getting much more nutrients into your body, whatever people say, the quality of calories DOES matter! Also these foods are usually LOADS cheaper in bulk at 'ethnic supermarkets' don't waste your money on tofu and lentils and nuts at the supermarket they're robbing you blind! Hope that helps alll the best. :)

@SirLaurenWilson Read your Bible, we are superior to the animals, Christ ate meat. If animals are killed with some respect and dignity shown what's wrong with that? Which means they shouldn't be tortured to death. That's what Temple Grandin did, she came up with a way to kill them so they don't suffer fear or trauma. If people choose not to eat animals, their decision but why should the ones of who do be made to feel like outcasts?

I think in-vitro meat, which is a lab grown form of meat (but essentially the same thing) involves no animal suffering and I believe that this could replace the conventional meat industry which involves animal exploitation. But I do agree that factory farming should be banned in the mean time and free-range farms should exist until in-vitro meat can replace it. I think in-vitro meat could replace the conventional meat industry& really has to, by around 2050 to save our ecology

I find that a lot of food companies will dehumanize the animals they slaughter to make them seem okay to eat. So a fast food restaurant that serves chicken may make the animal look stupid and goofy. But if they were to potray the animal to look beautiful, intelligent or godlike then that would probably make it harder to stomach.

A baby lettuce doesn't have to. My mother bought a kind of lettuce the other day that's packaged in a plastic container that keeps its roots intact so that it stays alive while you store in the fridge. Today I made a turkey sandwich and used a leaf of that head of lettuce. But before I tore off that leaf I kind of had to work up the nerve because the thing was still alive and the feeling was the same as if I had been looking a the turkey that provided the slices of meat for my sandwich.

Last week the AWI and FSIS released a 5 year study titled "Crimes without Consequences". It documents slaughterhouses frequently have violations to the "humane slaughter act". Many animals are dis-assembled while fully concious. The FDA shows little concern to correct these problems. There's a 15% chance that what's on your plate was tortured before death.
"Humane Slaughter" is a contradiction in terms.10billion times a year! Go Vegan!
This report is on the AWI website see for yourself....

Your argument is irrelevant. Most animals are tortured before anything be it animal human, eats it.

@jmdnarri That's odd since the human digestive system is exactly the same as every other vegetarian, not to mention the dental structure. You eat meat because you were raised that way nutrition has nothing to do with it.

I think more people should not get jobs in factory farms because why would somebody want to hurt so many animals?

Anyone who thinks slaughter can be humane is an insane & violent person - exactly what Temple Grandin is. She and any animal "advocate" who supports her should be ashamed of himself.

@sixtiescatfight So killing an animal when it doesn't have to die is empathetic AND humane? Perhaps we should reconsider these words. Humane means to treat with compassion, sympathy, and tenderness (and mercy when it's required). "Humane slaughter" is an oxymoron in a world where it is not necessary for human survival, health, or prosperity. "Realistic"ly, by eating like this, we WASTE enough food to feed hundreds of millions more people than we do. This is not humane.

@jmdnarri I don't pretend to be an expert on the subject of nutrition. What I do know is how it works for me.
Being vegas has made me feel good. A friend of mine trains the army special forces and puts them on a strict low meat diet as he finds it slows them down.
Not too mention the china study which was the largest scientific study done on diet and nutrition and how it realated to disease. Bottom line less meat less cancer, more meat more cancer. That science not propaganda.

Pfff the things people will say or do to continue stuffing their faces with meat at every meal, while shutting their eyes at the sight of these animals' living conditions. The most disgusting has got to be the phony argumentation. As if there was something 'natural' about Big Meat. Some talk about predators but this is a factory, something totally different we're talking about. Most people would be too queasy to kill and prepare their own meat anyway. But they talk tough online...

+alleygh0st People like you and your militant ideas don't help animals!!!...Like it or lump it people eat meat and will continue to until it becomes extinct....Therefore at least make their handling and killing more humane..They need help NOW

I don't really have a problem with people eating meat. Let them handle the killing themselves for a change is what I'm saying. At least once in a while.

I totally agree - there are very few things on this planet as vile and cruel as halal and kosher animal slaughter. Truly there's no evil quite like religiously motivated evil.
