    LOL
    Stage 1: fight algae
    Stage 2: lose battle with algae
    Stage 3: say algae is your friend and embrace it.

    with keeping my goldfish, I use it as an algae factory to keep feeding my oto's fresh food in my display tank. algae is natural, and does displace nutrients well. it may not be the prettiest, but it does displace the imbalances of your tank. It's cool that you can see the types of foods that nurture different kinds of algae, because of the differences in composition of the food. good video!

    I was able to wipe out snails in seven tanks. I had used "No Planaria" in a shrimp tank. I had not removed the snails that were in it because I was actually hoping it would kill all the snails. After two weeks of no snails I administered "No Planaria" to seven of the nine tanks I had at that time. One untreated tank was kept for raising snails as puffer food. The other non-treated tank was brackish with the puffer. The other seven tanks had no signs of any snails (other than empty shells) within a week and never had snails again. I also started using it in quarantine tanks whenever I bought plants from anywhere.

    I love this video! I love when well known aquarists talk about the benefits of natural aquariums that are not high maintenance, not that there’s anything wrong with having high maintenance tanks, but you’re not a bad aquarist if you’re tanks aren’t beautifully maintained and algae free. Also, what size of tanks are you using for your breeding tanks?

    I can't get enough of that rainbow tank!! 🤩I've thought about washing my hands between aquariums, but I'm afraid I'm so ADHD, I'll move on to the next thing before I make sure to rinse ALL the soap or hand sanitizer off! Every new rule requires an entire new system to implement that rule🤔

    In saltwater aquariums there is a concept of an "algae scrubber" where you purpoeefully grow turf or hair algae in a reactor or a second container outside the display tank.
    It has two benefits, you just harvest the algae every so often and let it regrow which is a nutrient removal vector (and all the other things algae removed)
    And also it disincentivizes algae from growing in the display tank qnd keeps them looking better and letting the desired photosynthesizers grow (coral or plants, same concept)
    Ive always wondered if one would work in freshwater with green hair algae!

      Also it's absolutely not wrong to call algae a plant. If anything, all terrestrial AND aquatic plants are downstream taxonomically of green algae! They're technically just advanced algae, just like we as tetrapod humans are advanced fish!

    Interesting results with the different foods. I don't mind algae. I consider it insurance against ammonia/nitrite/nitrates when I get behind on water changes. I also like the way it looks on rocks and wood.

    There's a tank at Picasso Exotic Aquatics that has the green hair algae maybe that looks deep green and flowing in the huge tank, it's actually beautiful.

    Anytime I get algae I do one or a few things. I keep the lights off for theee ore four days, do not feed for three or four days and if that doesn't help the bloom, when in doubt add more plants lol always ended up fixing the issue for me. And this goes for ones with and without filters. But over all I don't mind some usually I let it go on the rocks or back wall on some. Depends on the intention of the tank. Also I really find that the cheaper the tanks light the higher algae growth as well.

    A good option if you want the benefits of algae, but you don't want the algae visible, is to build a wall sponge filter at the back of the tank and have algae behind the wall with a small light that stays on behind the tank. A sponge over the bottom of the outtake pipe keeps the algae from escaping into the tank. Works wonders!

  • @angiebear8727

    Before I kept plants in my aquariums I was happy to have some algae growth to help clean the water. Now it is the bane of my existence. Lol. Still certain types under control aren’t too bad and actually make the tank look a bit more natural.

    you are def heading in the right direction. algae is ecologically necessary and indispensable for getting fry started. i have a few buckets outside that get a bright green bubbly scum on the surface that i collect and feed to my tanks. i use a microscope to see what's going on as well.

    OMG good to hear the tubs took longer to cycle. I'm currently cycling my first plastic tub and it's taking so much longer than all my tanks. I can’t put any fish in to help cycle as there's Nitrite showing. Should I keep water changing or just leave it? Many thanks!

    I caught a vid years ago where the person was keeping plastic medaka tubs outdoors and said it's important to rough up the sides of the tubs with something to give even more surface area for beneficial bacteria. They were using a metal brush to scratch the plastic so it's more like the big clay pots medaka have been kept in for years and years, and years. I wonder if it actually makes a difference.

    • @teagancombest6049
      @teagancombest6049 6 місяців тому +1

      It definitely makes sense, the reason we use things like biomax ceramic media is to give the bacterial biofilms a nucleation point. It's definitely harder for them to grow on smooth surfaces than rough ones like saltwater live rock.
      Plastic is also smoother at a molecular level than glass which is actually not very smooth if you look closely.

    Mate it feels like you have no water flow? Which could lead to algae blooms! In all of my tanks that had not a lot of water movement I had the same issue!

    I have a large purple rock that has a really rough texture. A thick patch of hair algae has grown on the top and down one of the faces. I've moved it to different tanks a couple times, and whichever one it's in is the healthiest one in the house. It also looks really nice if you keep the algae short.

    I have only deep substrate tanks and I've only ever had algae issues (green string/ hair algae types) in my row of cube tanks in a north facing windowsill that only gets natural light, no supplemental lighting at all. In my tanks that are led lit I had a black beard algae bloom from a plant, but luckily that's where my Snowball Neocaridina are and they noshed all of it within a couple weeks, but never any other algae issues. I wonder if it's limiting the led lit tanks to max 9 hours of light a day and keeping the light not maxed out? 🤔

    • @teagancombest6049
      @teagancombest6049 6 місяців тому +2

      The spectrum of light provided by sunlight is also different than even the most expensive LEDs can hope to achieve. PAR in what appears to be dark shade in the middle of the day could be over 500 which we would consider insanely high light in an aquarium. And it has a different spectral composition as well, so different algaes will grow that can utilize the different wavelengths.
      You can see this if you set up two identical tanks and have one with just red light and one with just blue light, you'll get different types of algae.

      @@teagancombest6049 it is really neat seeing the difference in fish color and plant growth in these natural light only tanks. My Exclamation Point Rasbora ( Bororas sp. I can never remember the spelling of 🤣) look like neon Tetra with this crazy bright orange line along the midsection! And monte carlo has grown 12"tall just letting it do it's weird natural light, no tech thing. And you've not experienced the true otherworldly beauty that is the Sparkling Gourami until you've seen those neon blue eyes and sleek silvery gold body just appear out of nowhere from a mass of Bacopa rotundafolia! It's really fun. These natural light tanks are my favorite to just sit and watch.
