      I used this spell in a recent session. We were in a forest where successive spell casts increased the chance for a wild magic surge to go off. Had a little combat and used rope trick after to hole up and lick our wounds without fear of more wild magic surges. Yay pocket dimensions.

    fun fact: this spell is based on a magic trick supposedly performed in India as early as the 8th century. Western stage magicians used to argue about how it was done. I always thought it was interesting how such a weird spell ended up as part of D&D canon and now we have people theorizing about its tactical advantages

      In the original trick, the magician chases a kid up there and supposedly chops them up, throwing down arms and legs. So regardless of the tactical advantages relative to a fight outside the pocket dimension, you don't want to be the only one without a sword INSIDE the pocket dimension.

    I was playing a rope themed arcane trickster/artificer, and would use rope trick to have an instant crane between 10ft-60ft tall . Have a block and tackle attached to the top with my rope of entanglement attached to it. Entangle someone in the magic rope, then lift them into the air. Turning most of my enemies into pinatas! Sometimes my familiar would be in the cover at the top of the rope, then drop down to help me reel them in or help my fellow party members climb. So many avoided climb checks, basically having a portable elevator. I even used it to build a near instant rope bridge once. DM said I could move up to 2000lb (about the average weight of 8 medium sized creatures+gear) before the rope would tear from the extra dimensional space and end the spell effect. Sudo flight, portable battering ram, and only ever killing my enemies with fall damage were perks to this build.

    1. I think it is reasonable to assume that spell-like effects such as a dragon's breath would be stopped by "no spells or attacks can get through". RAI it would seem to mean you should be safe up there.
    2. You can use the rope to get through, but it doesn't say the entrance entirely disappears if you pull up the rope, it's just invisible. And while attacks and spells can't pass through, creatures definitely can. Flying seems viable.

      @@symphony10 I disagree with that interpretation of the ruling. I would qualify a breath weapon as an attack personally. Especially in the case of Tiny Hut. That seems against RAI to me.

      @@SuperSpells "If there's ever any question whether something you're doing counts as an attack, the rule is simple: if you're making an attack roll, you're making an attack" - PHB pg. 194.
      The only thing that would contradict this would be an application of "Specific Beats General". For instance, Grapple and Shove are SPECICALLY called an attack. However, Dragon's breath NEVER uses the word "Attack".
      If the intent was to prevent people from DAMAGING those on teh other side, it would have been written as such (Note how Sanctuary EXPLICITLY states you can't attack OR cast spells OR deal damage).
      Tiny Hut blocks breath weapons from multiple interpretations. The flames/acid/whatever an object, in which case its blocked. Even if you try to argue that "Energy isn't an object", its still blocked because the inside of the hut isn't affected by external atmosphere.

    The spell does specify you need to climb to the top of the rope. That somewhat implies if you don't climb the rope the extradimensional space would be unreachable.
    Casually I would rule it as being a basic portal at the top of the rope which nothing can be seen through, but otherwise the area can be entered normally. But if I trusted my players not to break the spell I would allow the pedantic ruling because it would be funnier to force people to climb the rope.

    It is worth noting that the rope trick spell states that the rope vanishes, not the entrance. It also states that it creates an entrance to the extradimensional space until the spell ends. Finally, it states that the rope "can be" climbed to reach the entrance, as opposed to "must be".
    This means, to me, that while attacks and spells can't pass through the entrance, everything else can, including creatures that don't touch the rope and enemy creatures that can see the invisible 3 by 5 window entrance.
    Some of my players have argued that because it says "can be", as opposed to "may be", it must require climbing the rope to enter. They have also argued that the window is not the entrance to the extra dimensional space, or that larger creature's cant enter the extradimensional space, even if they can fit through the window(like an ooze or water elemental, for example.)
    Most of these arguments are silly, for two primary reasons;
    1. They assume that if a spell doesn't explicitly state an interaction with the world and setting, it must not be allowed. This is verifiably untrue based on how skill checks work in 5e; nothing in those rules prevent skill checks from interacting with spells.(yes, specific beats general, but if specific doesn't exist, general applies)
    2. Short and long rests are some of the strongest types of support in the whole game. Unless the GM is a jerk and doesn't let rope trick count as a short rest because it "doesn't quite last an hour", then rope trick is plenty strong without also preventing fights from taking place.
    If those arguments aren't enough, here's some more specifics;
    -If the window isn't the entrance, then how big is the entrance to the extradimensional space? Could a creature grab the rope, then walk in, because the entrance in 60 feet tall? Even if you want it to work like that, its a stupid interpretation.
    -If only medium creatures are allowed, how big is the extradimensional space itself? If it was one creature, then it could be 5Wx5Lx10H. But with eight, is it 20Wx10Lx10H? If it is, why cant a large creature enter the space? Even if you want it to seal to the forms of the eight medium or smaller creatures, then you'd have to question if small bugs could fill the extradimensional space. It just makes a bunch of unintuitive nonsense start to occur.
    -If you must climb the rope to enter, what counts as climbing? do you need to be able to hold your body weight with your arms? what if you use your feet, or are unusually light due to some magical effect? Just touching the rope would not be considered climbing by most people in nearly every circumstance, so requiring it as a condition would also certainly need to use the climbing rules in 5e, which is unnecessarily complicated.

    Flying into the dimension would, by my guess, be plausible. You'd fly to the top of the rope, open the "door" and enter as though you had climbed the full length of the rope. My guess is that the rope is the conduit to create a dimension door a protected plane, and without the rope, no one can contact said plane. This would prevent a wyrm from tailing your party when you fully pull the rope behind you as you enter the space or have the rope's end tied to a small sack that could be quickly thrown by an NPC who's on site or carried in the talons of your found familiar, flying up, and "dismissed" so the wyrm doesn't eat FyingGator...

    @TheFoxtailedSamurai 2 роки тому

    There's a lot to consider here, RAW.
    First of the spell does explicit state you enter by climbing. It could be argued RAW if the rope is too short to climb, you can't enter it as it needs to be entered from "the rope side." Common depictions show it like a door or window with a rope hanging out but the orientation of the portal is never specified.
    Next is you have to fully step out to attack, and that requires climbing. The movement cost isn't really an issue, but your hands are occupied during it. You also lose all Dex bonuses to AC while climbing. Any readied actions to hit you while you pop out to do damage are going to be way more likely to hit you. Never mind the AoO you would trigger from people adjacent to the rope as you climb up and down. You can also fall climbing checks - athletics and strength are not generally a spellcaster's strong suit. At a certain height a free hanging rope is also going to be difficult terrain (unless you tied footholds into it).
    Being a second level spell most intelligent enemies - especially enemy casters - should recognize it. It's susceptible to Dispel Magic (no rolls needed). They could throw a fog cloud on top of it and blind you. Your window to see out is limited and gives your enemies plenty of LOS cover to hide from you.
    Dropping the rope down is probably a bonus action but actively pulling it up is more likely an action (it goes beyond a simple interaction and would take time and effort to pull up, but that's DM call territory).

    So I considered the thought that the DM might not let you do the whole peeking out to attack thing (I know I probably wouldn’t)
    BUT
    A workaround for Artillerist Artificers:
    Tie your Eldritch cannon to the rope and pull *that* in and out of the space each turn.
    Since the attack is originating *outside* the space, it doesn’t get blocked by the entrance.
    Boom, you now have a turret.
    If it takes damage you can pull it up and use mending on it.
    To make it extra spicy, get a Homunculus Servant to carry it.
    Baddies will target the Homunculus not realizing that the cannon can still attack even if that gets destroyed (assuming it doesn’t smash into a million pieces when it hits the ground)
    There’s definitely ways to do similar things if you’re a Battlesmith.

    So... this is one of my favorite spells for arguably evil reasons. Something you didnt cover here is that it is not a concentration spell. So more than one can be active at a time. So if you have the time to set up a glyph of warding, you can thesably cast two in one turn using a catch phrase, and then try to run away from them on your turn (depending on if your dm rules that the extradimensional space is created immediately or if it takes a few seconds for the rope to reach its max height. As we all know, opening up an extradimensional space inside of an existing one creates a singularity leading to the astral plane. As a DM I had my BBEG leave an active rope trick alone in a dungeon, and then sent his familiar into the room with the party. The familiar is a cat with a bit of rope tied around it. Well familiars can use their reactions to cast your touch spells... thus traumatizing my party with exploding familiars. Some might rule that because magic doesnt pass through a rope trick, you cant open one up inside of another. But you can still cast several in an hour, and have your BBEG command undead or other minions to climb inside and wait for the party to wander into a room with a bunch of floating ropes. The time runs out on the spell and now you have 8xR creatures dropping around the party. Fun stuff

  • @lucas_lipp
    @lucas_lipp 2 роки тому

    I think the answer to these questions probably depend on if the entrance is opened or not. At least that's how I'd rule it.
    If you open the entrance and stick your head out, you could use a Dragonborn's breath weapon, as your head is not inside of the demi-plane.
    Similarly, I think monsters and other characters could fly in as long as the entrance is open. So if the rope is still hanging out, or if the party left the entrance open to fire at enemies, anyone could theoretically get in by flying. I don't think climbing the rope would be the only way to get in, at least as long as the entrance is open.
    I don't have much experience with this spell, but the party I'm currently running Descent into Avernus for also used it very effectively to avoid a fire storm on Avernus. I love spells like this that allow for cool stuff if the players are creative.

    In order to fire out of the Rope Trick, a character would have to secure themselves to not fall out then lean upside-down out of the hole. Sounds like disadvantage to me?
    How long does it take most characters (30 foot movement rate, no climb speed) to get from the ground to the Rope Trick's hole 60 feet up above the ground?
    What happens if there's an obstruction (low ceiling) blocking the rope from reaching its full height? Does the spell take effect at a lower height or is it blocked?

    Question #2: the rope is the "doorknob" to enter the space. Your type of movement is irrelevant. Contact with the rope is mandatory for entry.
    EXAMPLE: a character can't death canyon cliff dive into the space. They can however death canyon cliff dive to grab the rope that allows them into the space.
    If this be true, to better help answer Question #1, the condition is being met automatically by occupying the space. (To be in the space is "touching the rope".)
    🙄 now let me use my Questions powers:

    Regarding final questions. In the spell is stated how you enter the extradimensional space.
    RAI you clearly can only due it by using the rope. The sentence is to specify this, otherwise would have been not written.
    (However I get your reasoning)
    Mirror Image is great because it doesn't require concentration. And is very powerful, especially in a pinch (which is when things matter)
    It counters AT LEAST 3 attacks, probably more since you can still miss the mirrors..
    Yes on a long encounter there are better alternatives, but all of them requires concentration.
    Why do you think is bad?
    PS: following your videos, I keep seeing that you do DPR calculation, however you are assuming an average probability to hit.
    Even if you guess right, that's misleading: the average probability to hit is the most common value, however not necessarily all values have the same importance and weight. To be correct, you should assess all possible value.
    I personally due that on Excel. The results is a graph of DPR for every AC. Sometimes some builds have similar results for average AC, but very different results for extreme low/high AC, so it can happens that for a let's say +5% DPR on the against average AC, you actually sacrifice 50% DPR against more rare AC.

The rope is *one* way to get inside, but you could fly in, or set up a ladder, stack some blocks etc if you wanted to get close to the entrance and jump inside. If someone could get close to the entrance they could grapple your arm and pull you out!

    re: the flying question: I feel like the way the rope is integral to the function of the spell, it would at least be thematic that you need to use the rope as the portal. But there's no reason you have to climb the rope all the way from the ground. If you fly up to the top of the rope then touch it as you climb through the portal, I think that would satisfy the theme in a way that bypasses the rule question. Basically you're just pulling yourself in or even letting the rope guide you in the last couple feet through the portal to the interdimensional space.
    Basically, treat the rope as the key to the portal, at least from the outside.

    One thing I have a question with is WHERE is the entrance? Do you have hang upside down to get a shot off? Is it on the "side" so you can just pop out and shoot?

    first of all, i have been using this spell wrong if its considered a diffrent plane of existence, beacause i have "voice of the chain master, and it would allow me to know what spells the enemy is casting on my allies, to know if counterspell, second, i think its healthy to let flying creatures enter in the space, given that, if you hide the rope inside the space, it basically counters dispel magic, given you have to cast in the rope, and the only way for DM to deal with rope trick its with high manueverability (high speed an fly) and such, so i think we dont have to think this as the ultimate defense, just an excellent shelter. Finally, this spell if you are using tashas mind whip or slow, you wold avoid enemies to get the ready action to attack you when you get out of the rope, or opportunity attacks for your melee and they woul be in the entrance of the rope, and your enmy would be at half speed for this

    Tip: Don't bring multiple 5, 10 and/or 15 feet ropes. Bring one 60+ foot rope and cut it before an encounter where you might use the spell. Otherwise you might be effed when one of your friends falls down a 30 foot hole or something.
