The Madrid Agreement Concerning the International Registration of Marks, (“the Protocol”) was adopted in 1989, entered into force on December 1, 1995, and came into operation on April 1, 1996. This treaty was adopted at a Diplomatic Conference held in Madrid, Spain - thus the "Madrid System".
