  • If you can master the discipline of making more money but not spending more, you'll build wealth a LOT faster and even retire early. If you don't want to wake up one day and wonder where all your money went, make sure to keep that "lifestyle creep" in check!
It's about being aware of the tradeoffs. Because there is ALWAYS a tradeoff. Every time you say YES to something, you're saying NO to something else. Sure, you deserve to have nice things. But you know what else you deserve? You deserve to not have to work until you die. Everything has a tradeoff.

Clothes can be so dangerous! I reached a point where every month I would go shopping and come home with mountains of clothes, thinking they'd make me happy. And I ended up barely wearing them or wanting to wear something else the next month. Nowadays I'll hit an outlet shopping center once a year, get clothes on a discount, and actually wear what I own. So much money saved!

I try to attach some spending with something else. For example, never eat out unless it's with friends (ie. Never buying breakfast or lunch for work), taking a girls trip after hitting saving and investing goals as a trip, buying new gym clothes after reaching fitness goals. I think it also helps motivate myself to reach goals but not depriving myself in the process.

Even when I was making $200k/year I still lived on about $80k/year and invested the rest into the stock market for decades. It’s really liberating to tell your boss to f-off and just quit when he’s a jerk. The last two jobs I just up and quit because of managers. Because of our money management discipline, our net worth hit $6M and we’re still in our mid-50s and will retire in 2.5 years .

I started cooking my own meals in March. Dropped my spending by a lot!!! Also, if I do eat out, I try NOT to use apps and instead give the money to the Restaurant! No bottled water, either. Recyclable bottles are better for the environment and cost less in the long run. I wanted a bigger TV and found a 48" for $45 at a thrift store! No need to always buy the most expensive stuff!!! I have been following your videos to learn more about planning the future without sacrificing all of the now. Thanks for all the solid advice! Now every time I’m about to spend money on a ‘want’ instead of a need I think of how many hrs I had to work to earn the money that I’m about to spend. 100% when I asked myself that question I end it not buying that want... makeup, beauty salon, nail/pedicure...

Ironically, without every new gadget I honestly feel like I'm living in the future by living for my future if that makes sense.
The hardest part was programming my thoughts to no longer care about comments family members and people around me make based on assumptions that I don't have much money.

Thanks for making this; I don't think I've seen it addressed before but am experiencing it now. I went to buy a sofa for the first time in my life -- not a big fancy leather thing just a 700 dollar Ikea one --and at the register I was literally sweating beads because it hit me that I was about to spend the most at a check out I've ever spent in my life. I was homeless 15 years ago. The place I lived after that I slept on seat pads on a basement floor. Like you I just had a moment where I realized how different the numbers felt. I told myself I could get the sofa because I've wanted that model for years and I had set money aside for it. I don't worry about how much is in my account most of the time when I get food. Sometimes now if I do have an unexpected expense I still physically freak out and have to talk myself down like "it's ok, you have a savings now, and you can replenish that in a few months...". Sometimes I walk through my neighborhood now and see the nice cars people have and go "man if I could afford that I wouldn't be living here...", I can't see ever spending a lot on a car especially if I had to finance much of it. I'm gonna drive my beater into the ground. For me, I was really torn on whether to keep my apartment without a roommate, that was the hardest decision, still not sure it's right but it's an easy one to change if I want a roommate again. I'm at least still really good at not buying new clothes until I have like ... no option in that category left, and I am a super cheap traveller. I stay in Motel 6, hostels, or camp for 3 reasons: saves my money, i travel with a dog, and I get to stay in super nice hotels from time to time anyway through my work.
PS your hair is sooooo beautiful! Love the colors.

Yes, so important not to creep up on every category at the same time! I think it's okay to choose and be mindful of your spending and splurges. That stuff changes over time too. I'm okay spending on convenience and certain services, like house cleaning, high quality groceries at the farmer's market. I'm also okay driving a normal car and picking up food directly from the restaurant.

And then, you're absolutely right! I had a job that I loved, but it didn't pay a lot. I lucked into a great job that drastically increased my income, and my spending went WAY UP too. I could survive on what I made previously, but I didn't have a plan for all that new, 'disposable' income--so I wasted a lot. I bought all of the things I would have had to save and save for before. I have a great wardrobe now, lol.

it comes down to this. If you love what you have, you have everything you need. Lifestyle creep is (sometimes) a symptom of not being happy enough in your emotional or spiritual life. Obviously its great to spend money in ways that bring you joy, but if luxuries are becoming the norm, its a problem.

Have a perfectly good car, great gas mileage, even has heated leather seats and a sunroof which is more than I ever even needed and still I convinced myself I needed a car that was "sexy" and "cool." To impress who I really have no idea. So glad I didn't fall into the trap of paying $500+ a month in car payments. I live in San Diego and covid restrictions have begun to loosen up quite a bit. There's also tons of outdoor dining options available and definitely this month I have noticed a serious uptick in my "revenge spending" mainly in my dining out budget category. I've had fun and it feels good to get out and support local restaurants but it also just feels so wasteful considering probably 50% of that money is going towards alcohol. I've committed to making some lifestyle changes and instead of going to restaurants and bars in order to be social, I'm organizing more hiking and beach days. Things that are active and less expensive and kinder to my liver. I haven't nailed it yet, avoiding alcohol in social situations is really challenging, but I'm excited about the progress I'm making. If I could add a #9 to your list it would be "Don't drink your money"

Great overview! The topic of travel hit home for sure. I got used to the benefits of premium credit cards, such as lounge access. Since I don't want to give this up completely, I have been able to negotiate discounts or receive extra points that I can put towards travel later on. Although I have thought about cancelling it and just paying for access on a one off basis if I really want it. Serious first world problems, but I thought I'd share in case anyone has also thought about this. Another big area of spending for me are monthly subscriptions. I think I will cancel audible as well since I have accumulated a decent library of audiobooks that I still need to work through. Thanks for the tips!

I needed this pep talk/reminder. I went from making $8 an hour and work 3 jobs to be able to eat in college to making $65,000 a year job 4 months after graduation and my spending became out of control! I had to have this same conversation with myself a few months ago when I was "replacing" items in my home that there was nothing wrong with or buying things I already had to "test or compare" to see if it was better ! I've experienced EXACTLY what you're talking about. You live up to you means and everytime your means increase so does your spending. So freaking crazy! I'm glad I'm not alone in this!!

Spending creep for me ended up in more expensive, higher-end alcohol. More expensive wines, more expensive hard liquors, hipster, pre-prohibition style drinks, better beer (or going out rather than a beer at home). And I drank at the same rate I was consuming the cheaper stuff. Now, I don’t abstain altogether, but I only drink with friends and enjoy “the good stuff” slowly in a sitting and once a month tops. Also way better for my health goals, btw. Crazy how spending habits can creep up so quickly.
