The middle cord is not what solely holds the weight. The chains are part. The table is in a constant balance between tension and compression from all sides, that's why it stands. This balance is created by the middle cord and the chains. They aren't there to sell an illusion. They all carry the weight .
It is an illusion, though. It looks like the chains are somehow supporting the weight of the top plate but that's impossible. The perceived behaviour is different to the expected behaviour, so it's a type of illusion.

@@Problemsolver434 it's still an illusion, although not exactly how described in the video. The illusion might be "this appears as if it should fall" or it might be "this makes it seem as through chain is somehow maintaining its shape despite being in compression" - either ways, for most people seeing tensegrity for the first time it does seem to behave in ways that require trickery. That's pretty much the definition of an illusion.

The chains are mainly there to limit the height of the table and keep tension on the rubber band. If they weren't there, the rubber band would pull the one piece of wood to the same height as the other one, lifting the table even higher, and at that point the band would no longer have tension, causing the whole thing to fall.
