A legendary game that they still talk about on Tyneside more than 40 years later. Such a pity that we didn't give a better account of ourselves in the final. We never turned up that day and made it very easy for Liverpool. We just went to pieces after Hillsborough. We had six league games before the final and I seem to recall we lost the lot. Legend has it that immediately after the last league game the Newcastle team headed straight for London and spent the week before the final living it up and seeing the sights while the Liverpool team came down to Wembley on the team bus on the Saturday morning, won the cup and went home. Nevertheless great days. This was what football was all about. You can keep your Premiership, Sky Sports, all seater stadiums, Champions League, international breaks, semi finals at Wembley and 300 grand a week prima donnas. The beautiful game was so much better back in the 70's and 80's.
This was about the time I started to go to St James's, 11 year old in the leazexs end, crammed up against the barriers right at the front just behind the goal....magic Amazingly I can just about remember every name on the teamsheet from those days
I've never seen a better through ball than the one from Terry Hibbitt for the second goal-probably never will-how this team won nothing really beats me-going forward they were unstoppable!!
When Supermac scores the goals look at the Geordies jumping up behind the goal in the Burnley end (priceless ) It didn't matter that they were amongst thousands of Burnley Fans they just wanted to watch the toon. I was at the match in the Geordie end what an atmosphere the Burnley fans were also great on the day even in defeat
When football was for men. Great crowd and atmosphere. Wonderful to watch. Burnley didn't deserve to lose on the day, however super mac was the difference.
Not the result that I wanted, but still, more exciting to watch than the stuff that we see today. The ticket arrangements that day were crazy. Opposing fans mixed in with each other. I swapped mine with a Newcastle fan so that I could be in with my mates and he could get on the Kop end.
It's even bigger now, as they extended it, to make it square, as that made fitting a roof cheaper, than would have been with the slope that it had originally. Of course now it has seats, and we all know how that came about.
The best day of my life, it's hard to describe how full that ground was, I seen thousands of Newcastle fans paying to get in at the turnstiles at the spion kop end, no wonder it looks so full, all ticket game,
i was only 9 back then and didnt even know about this game lol probly playing on me skateboard somewhere lol .7 year later i got the bug lol . still seen us win feck all lol . TOON TOON .
Still got my ticket stub. 60p behind the goal. Take a look at the toon fans behind the goal. I'm dead centre. You just don't get this any more. I got the last of the big terrace atmosphere. The leezers. Cop. Stafford. Shed. Been to some great games in the 70 80s when it was pay at the gate and they never closed the gates. And fiddled the attendance's for tax reasons..there's probably 50 k toon fans in one end at Hillsborough. The final was the same thousands of Geordie's got in without tickets. Squeezing behind someone with a ticket through a turnstile or climbing the stair wells up knotted scarf's...glory days..
I was a nipper back then and me brother got us in to the kop end, under the turnstiles, without a ticket! I never saw much during the match but just remember the noise. It was endless!! When Supermac's first went in I ended up aboot half a mile away from where I'd first being standing! Me owldest brother was in the Burnley end and he had a canny shiner after a bit of bother with their lot. Happy memories.
Newcastle do have a great support but your claim of 50k in one end is one of the funniest things I have read . Your powers of fan exaggeration have no equal..
I went to the away match at turf moor same year wow 50 years ago this year,i was 14 years old,i remember the police were in among the crowd gettin"pretty rough!!
Burnley were better than Newcastle this season, shame it wasn't a Burnley v Liverpool final would have been better than the 3-0 absolute walkover, no contest. Nowt against u tho my Geordie friends u deserved To win at Hillsborough. BURNLEY FC FOR LIFE!

Liverpool travelled to London on the Thursday.
nowts changed then eh lol we still never turn up for finals lol .@@scherben8870
The noise levels are incredible - football really was the peoples game back then.
What a game. I was a football-mad 9 year-old in ‘74 and remember that both semi-finals that year were fantastic. It’s great to relive this again.

Terry Hibbitt's ball for the second goal is still the greatest pass I have ever seen in my life.
might he be a relative to Wolves' Ken Hibbitt?
If Messi or Ronaldo played a ball like that it'd never be off the telly
@@Salzburgerstiegl his brother
Yes he was Kenny Hibbits brother , as mentioned by Brian Moore (comentator) towards the end of the game. Terry became a milkman when he retired.
Still brings tears to my eyes after all these years! The support was phenomenal that day. Supermac at his most clinical 🙌
I've never seen a better through ball than the one from Terry Hibbitt for the second goal-probably never will-how this team won nothing really beats me-going forward they were unstoppable!!
Surely one of the finest days in the History of Newcastle United... FAN-TASTIC !!!

Great 70's game ! and we didn't need to use Wembley as a semi's venue. Wembley was for finals, not semi finals.
I was there great day need some now semi final of the league cup today this might be the day
When football was for men. Great crowd and atmosphere. Wonderful to watch. Burnley didn't deserve to lose on the day, however super mac was the difference.

That was one hell of a terrace at Hillsborough.
It's even bigger now, as they extended it, to make it square, as that made fitting a roof cheaper, than would have been with the slope that it had originally. Of course now it has seats, and we all know how that came about.
Supermac was a tank! Great spirit shown by both sides and that home stand behind the goal was so effing epic
I wish we had this kind of following now. We get more through the gate but about half of them might as well stay at home.
30/03/1974 :)
What an atmosphere. No chance of that being replicated these days; too many idiot gimmicks.
Great through ball for the toon's 2nd goal. Reminded a bit of stuart beedie's pass for dundee united against Man united in the Euro cup winners cup.
Yes. Very reminiscent.

Kind of ominous for what happened at Hillsboro years later
i was only 9 back then and didnt even know about this game lol probly playing on me skateboard somewhere lol .7 year later i got the bug lol . still seen us win feck all lol . TOON TOON .
Goalkeepers played with barehands, those days they were crazy.
Aaah the seventies that terrace ha ha colliseum like health and safety forget it but what a sight
that was some size kop mind i wonder how many it held?
