Just some bits and pieces you've missed Lumine woke up in sunrise indicating that she woke up 500 years ago and Aether woke up in Sunset indicating he woke up 500 years later the shot showing Aether fishing and met Paimon and Lumine walking in mondstadt with Dainsleif after they met is showing when their journey started (Also just a little detail is that Lumine and Dainsleif is always apart while Aether and Paimon is always close to each other indicating their bond with their companions) 9:59 Lumine is already mentally breaking down there is no evidence but my theory is Dain told Lumine his backstory and what happened to Khaenri'ah and since Dain is just starting to suffer and depressed about everything he can't comfort Lumine while for Aether, Paimon is always therr to cheer him up whenever he is feeling down idk if you ignored it or didn't noticed it but in this part 10:37 in Sumeru it shows the two siblings walking in their own Journey and when Lumine stopped it was bcs Sumeru was when she ended her Journey and went directly to Khaenri'ah after witnessing what happened to Caribert's family and as you can see here 11:39 you'll see the Mirror the mc dropped is the "We'll be reunited" quest where we saw Lumine's memory of Caribert and his dad through Leylines (and yes they are actually in the same place but different time) and the "Happy Memories" they had is actually not their memories it's more like showing us what their journey is if they took the right road in their journey hence the name "The Road Not Taken" and the last shot when there is a sunrise is basically Aether walking up in darkness (Sunset) and having his Journey to light (Sunrise) and Lumine's journey eas the opposite of it (if i commented this twice it's bcs i wan to make sure you read this bcs i want people to understand what is happening)
Something I liked a lot in this animation is the contrast of Paimon and Dainsleif. A lot of people have already pointed out how the animation always shows that Lumine and Dainsleif always have a huge distance between them. It gives the impression that despite traveling together, Lumine and Dainsleif probably weren't friends. In contrast, Aether and Paimon seem to be much closer together, showing the strength of their relationship. Another interesting contrast is that, to me, Paimon always seems to be glowing in this animation, whereas Dainsleif always seems to be completely devoid of light. Paimon took away some of Aether's darkness, but Dainsleif made Lumine's grow bigger. The final shots though is what cemented the differences in their relationship. We see Paimon physically lifting and pulling Aether onto his feet towards morning light. Dainsleif, by contrast, merely taps Lumine before walking towards sunset, towards darkness, seemingly leaving her behind. And it takes everything Lumine has left to stand up on her own and follow Dainsleif towards that same darkness. Paimon won't ever abandon her friends and will always make sure that they are always walking alongside her. Dainsleif, too focused on his mission, doesn't seem to care who he leaves behind by constrast.
I'm surprised you didn't comment on the shot where Aether walks through a puddle while matching Lumine's steps in the reflection, but then Lumine suddenly stops while Aether keeps walking forward. This shot seems to be in Sumeru, and those of us who have done the Caribert quest know that Sumeru is where the course of our sibling's journey became altered, leading them down a different path than us.
I'm convinced this is UFO table's work. I know that there's nothing out there that definitively proves this, but UFO table have closely worked with Aimer for pretty much all of their projects since Fate: Unlimited Blade Works. Brave shine and all 3 openings for the 3 heaven's feel movies and she has been closely involved with Demon Slayer as well, it would make sense to me if UFO table did animate it due to bringing her onto the project.
@@arrandonbavand Aimer already sang for a fanmade animatic of genshin, so it's no surprise she would work for an official animation by hoyo themselves. It's not because it's ufotable or something, but because she'd actually love to work for genshin projects. Plus, hoyo already has their own animation studio, way before any collab with ufotable. (It would be improper not to cite ufotable for animating this short if they were actually responsible for animating this.)
@@Zero_Li24 that ☝ also hoyo's own animation studio is incredibly incredibly skilled and talented themselves, and have only continued to improve throughout the years. they've been animating since honkai impact 3rd and you can see how it's changed in their recent animation work for hsr!
I really like how they interchanged the sunset and sunrise with Aether and Lumine at the start and end of the short. There were a lot of lore shots with the traveller getting the elements while the abyss sibling not getting them. And the walking scene where the puddle was reflecting the steps of both the siblings but Lumine just stops somewhere in between. This was a blast!
A really important part of this is that Dain was only with her for the 500 years that Aether was missing. Every shot of Lumine is from when she didn't know if her brother was alive or dead, and you see a hardness in her eyes by the final shot. There's a very good chance that whatever evil she's involved in now started as a way to save or avenge Aether.
This short - is the Genshin I always wanted to play all these years. Yes, it's a nice game and all, but I stayed here for the story, for the feelings, I always thought "What my boy Aether is thinking about, how does he feel?"and so on... And I always thought "Is Lumine even cares about her brother? Why does she abandon him first time when they saw each other in 500 years?" I really-really-really am waiting for Ufotable anime! I hope it will have the same vibe as this short and goes deeper in emotions and less in actions. And I mean not only Aether and Lumine but everyone else too.Of course I still want some epic battles but I think they should be epic not ONLY because of cool animation and choreography but first and formost for the feelings!
Genshin is gorgeous in every single aspect. This animated short was amazing. It feels like they are ready to start ramping things up as we approach the final parts of the story, where the heavy lore bombs will drop along with the crazy events in the story.
For me those sections that seemed cut out i interpreted it as "the memories that could have been if they weren't separated" but everyone will have their own view on it which makes it that much better.
Idk about everyone else, but In my mind, 2:59 where Lumine's reflection stops is probably the point where Aether and Lumine's journey's started to really deviate. The path's they chose seemed pretty similar for a while since we know she also helped those around her like the aranara, but we still don't know what happened to make her hate Dain and end up where she is now. My guess is that was probably the point in her journey where she met Clothar and due to her situation really taking a toll on her mentally, made it easier for him to manipulate her and ultimately affect the decisions she made from then on. Aether was able to pick himself up again every time because he has positive influences in his life now like paimon, Xianyun and all of the other friends he's made pushing him forward, but as far as we can tell, Lumine never really had that same level of support. All she had was Dainsleif, who really wasn't in the mental space to be helping anyone considering he had just lost his nation and loved ones himself.
What really got to me within seconds is those two shots of the sibling and the sky in the beginning. It strongly invoked the climax of the anime movie "Your Name" for me. Aether framed towards the left, Lumine towards the right. They are literally in the same place. They long for each other but they are cruelly separated by time. The heartache just got worse after that scene.
This was all emotional. I absolutely loved seeing this and hope to see more from them. If you haven't yet, I recommend watching the Boothill trailer from Star Rail. Very different from this but I think you'll have a lot of fun with it!
I don't think it's the same studio that did their HSR animated shorts (I don't delve into HSR that much so I dunno which studio did those; if someone knows, please point it out) because this one and The Song Burning in The Embers was done by their Genshin 2D animation team that was recently added (The Song Burning in the Embers was their debut project). They have another internal team mihoyoAnime that was there longer but that one (if I have correct info, someone correct me if i don't) just manages the work on animated cutscenes for Honkai Impact 3rd.
I cried so much watching this, especially the first few times. It hit so hard. The Road Not Taken. What we could have had. The joys, the moments we could have had with our sibling... They are so close yet so far. They are in the same place, seemingly on the same path but separated maybe 500 years. It's so beautiful yet so painful
The first time I realized they were separated by time was the second shot of them in the forest. The forest around Aether was big and grown while the trees in the same positions where young in Lumine's shot.
12:37 - that's not Lumine thinking about their memories/time together in Teyvat, because they didn't get that (it's why the title is "The Road not Taken"). Those scenes together are more like a "what if". This is the moment Lumine starts questioning her journey and turning to the Abyss while Aether stays on the path he's currently on in-game. It's also shown by the distance that’s always between Dain and Lumine while Aether and Paimon are always portrayed close together. And Paimon sleeping, well. It shows whereyour progress in-game is xd Always interesting seeing your takes on these shorts, though your HSR ones are more spot on^^ loved it anyways!
I just realized what this is, namely hoyoverse trying to ignite nostalgia in long time genshin players at approximately the same time Wuthering Waves was released, because they're concerned about losing some of the player base
It also symbolises that Lumine woke up in the light and is walking towards the darkness. Whereas Aether woke up at the cusp of darkness and is walking towards the light.
7:51 similarly to this, the scene before in the forest, the trees are much thicker and taller for Aether where as they're thinner when Lumine stopped there. The subtle imagery showing the vast difference in times they journey through. That feeling of following the same path at two different times, until 10:37 where Lumine stops walking in the reflection of the puddle; the point where their paths diverge. The cuts to 'memories' seeing how they would have traveled if they shared the journey together is heartbreaking, emphasized with the shots of the animals in pairs. This was the embodiment of "Show, don't tell".
It's really interesting to notice the difference between perspectives too. Like Aether ( traveller) who starts his journey from the perspective of a completely new world vs Lumine ( abyss sibling) who has already seen the fall of Khaenriah and traveling that world whose god destroyed that world
My current understanding of timeline - The twin was summoned to Khaenri'ah - Spent some time there (since aether had memories of Khaenri'ah) - Then for some reason had to hybernate or just sleep. - The War started and Gods descended on Khaenri'ah - Then Lumine woke Aether up to leave Teyvat immediately - The Sustainer stopped them while they were leaving - Aether most likely lost his power because he was attacking the sustainer with his full power but got blocked (he was heavily breathing after the attack) - Both Siblings then got trapped and separated - Then Lumine woke up first 500 years ago less (probably because she didn't fight much on that battle and had enough power to broke out hence why she still has her powers) - Then searched for Aether for years with Dain - Then half way through, she most likely changed her mission, (since the reflection indicated that the twin stopped while we continued) most likely where Lumine had a talk with the Clothar since she stopped on sumeru based on the reflection with npc having sumerian attire. - Then most likely 499-500 years later Aether woke up without his powers. (499 years because aether said he traveled a bit alone without direction before meeting paimon, just an estimate) - Then fished up paimon then the journey starts.
I understand the timeline more or less the same. Only mention that Aether didn't lose his powers because the attack strength, but because the Unknown God cast "some kind of seal" upon him that blocked them. He said that to Paimon in the opening scene, in one of the very few lines that are actually dubbed =) In fact, I think the exact moment he loses them is when the Sustainer parrys his attack by casting a big ball of fire and cubes that concentrates in his hand, just seconds before she "cubifies" him.
@@smartinro. hmmm..... I do agree but lets meet on the middle, Aether used too much power on the battle and Sustainer easily sealed his power while Lumine wasn't using her power so she broked out more easily and early than Aether.... explains why Lumine still has her powers and was released early.... hehe~
Can you explain where was it mentioned that they were hibernating before the khaenri'ah got attacked? Also wasn't lumine already well known in khaenri'ah?
@@ishansharma2463 im not sure it's hybernation or just slept but Aether is sure to have slept for a bit near the end of Khaenri'ah idk about Lumine, cause Aether mentioned that when he was woken up by Lumine everything was already in chaos but as we can see in the short they had spent a bit of time on Teyvat already,
2:59 Really like how Aether’s reflection is Lumine. Also interesting how he continues walking, but his reflection (which is Lumine) stops. Wonder what that implies.
Eventually, Lumine stopped looking. Aether never did, he keeps trying to reconnect, but Lumine at some point, "gave up", even when they finally "Reunited", she's the one pushing him away, and Aether is in so much pain because he obviously, just wants to be together again. It's so sad. (Obviously she has her reasons, but she gave up on the dream of just being together again with her sibling, traveling the worlds. And her new duty is to this world, not Aether.)
you noticed some nice "things you might have missed in the road not taken animation video" so congrats. I suggest anyone to watch that, it really shows some interesting facts and some nice theories
you should check out the cutscene for cyno story quest part 2, the first part of the cutscene is a fight, you can skip the rest if you want since is just lore with animation similar to the teasers.

My current understanding of timeline
- The twin was summoned to Khaenri'ah
- Spent some time there (since aether had memories of Khaenri'ah)
- Then for some reason had to hybernate or just sleep.
- The War started and Gods descended on Khaenri'ah
- Then Lumine woke Aether up to leave Teyvat immediately
- The Sustainer stopped them while they were leaving
- Aether most likely lost his power because he was attacking the sustainer with his full power but got blocked (he was heavily breathing after the attack)
- Both Siblings then got trapped and separated
- Then Lumine woke up first 500 years ago less (probably because she didn't fight much on that battle and had enough power to broke out hence why she still has her powers)
- Then searched for Aether for years with Dain
- Then half way through, she most likely changed her mission, (since the reflection indicated that the twin stopped while we continued) most likely where Lumine had a talk with the Clothar since she stopped on sumeru based on the reflection with npc having sumerian attire.
- Then most likely 499-500 years later Aether woke up without his powers. (499 years because aether said he traveled a bit alone without direction before meeting paimon, just an estimate)
- Then fished up paimon then the journey starts.
I understand the timeline more or less the same.

It may have something to do with Irminsul as her data was "corrupted" at the end of her journey.
Eventually, Lumine stopped looking. Aether never did,
he keeps trying to reconnect, but Lumine at some point, "gave up", even when they finally "Reunited", she's the one pushing him away, and Aether is in so much pain because he obviously, just wants to be together again. It's so sad.
(Obviously she has her reasons, but she gave up on the dream of just being together again with her sibling, traveling the worlds. And her new duty is to this world, not Aether.)
The distance between paimon and aether vs dainsleif and lumine hits hard.
Genshin anime when ?
Probably a few months after Ufotable finishes the project they are working on now. Hopefully fall of 2024 or winter of 2025.
Likely once snezhnaya comes around
11:35 I always wondered why lumine stopped in the reflection of the puddle while Aether kept walking.
That’s because that place is sumeru and lumine stopped being a traveler in sumeru and met the Sinner and abyss
@@ShadowExtremeEX8 Ohhh you're right! after the Caribert quest.
you noticed some nice "things you might have missed in the road not taken animation video" so congrats. I suggest anyone to watch that, it really shows some interesting facts and some nice theories
This animation is beautiful. I don’t understand why they don’t just adapt this in to a tv series.😍
fountain switch is my fav part and them want walking mirrored from puddle plus photographed memories honestly made me cry
Watching this while eating and not choking from misty eyes is hard XD
I love that when Lumine is showed her "elemental" elements are pute white but Aether has different depending on region his in
you should check out the cutscene for cyno story quest part 2, the first part of the cutscene is a fight, you can skip the rest if you want since is just lore with animation similar to the teasers.
