    These are my thoughts on the conditions. There were two big factors in Suzuka, the tires and the tack. First off the current wet Perelli tires need to be scrapped and redone. The compound is too hard to provide proper traction, evidenced by how quickly most teams swapped at the restart. No team will voluntarily run the wet tire in a race, making them useless. Something like a softer intermediate that can provide more wet weather traction but may not last as long is what is needed.
    Now before the start of the race, there should have have been about 3-5 laps to help clear the water off the track and allow the drivers to get a better feel for the track conditions. Like what happened for the restart. One formation lap is not enough in the rain. I did enjoy what little racing there was and other than the first 3 laps, there were no incidents for the rest of the race. So Perelli needs to completely redesign the wet tire, and we need more that just a formation lap on a wet track.

    I would say this fairly representative of conditions yesterday. I think that the visibility issue is far more difficult than what your video can simulate, the spray is at least the double of what your sim could show. Thanks for your video mate, great as usual!

    Thank you Will for demonstrating how bad conditions were at Suzuka to even make the race possible. So, in hindsight, I would agree with you that the sim did not give reference to actually how bad the conditions were.
    The conditions when I raced at Suzuka were incredibly bad, and I was there in 2014. It was incredibly bad. The rains were extremely heavy and they thought about canceling our race there, The Super Formula race. I was also running F3 at the same time, and it was bad, it was so bad, I couldn’t even see about maybe 3 meters in front of my face.
    As far as the race went, yes Pierre was going way too fast, but here is the caveat, why did the wrecker deploy before the red flag conditions? This is the scary part. The double yellows waved, and usually there is an accident ahead or in that turn, but never a vehicle on the circuit. Usually, they wait for a red flag, let cars clear, then go. So, it’s on everyone to learn from this incident. That could have been bad. Jules crash should have never been. There should have been a red flag, race suspended, then tows, construction vehicles or whatever come onto the circuit, but not before.
    The double yellows does not satisfy the need for red flag, but let the group pack up before the recovery vehicles are on track. So both F1 and Alpha Tauri share the blame here.
    Too bad Pierre is going to Alpine, I still think he has a ton of talent.

    I remember karting one time many years ago, had full face motorcycle helmets on, suddenly a huge downpour and instant no see anything, the water coming off those little slick tyres of the Kart in front at 40mph, was incredible, like someone was hosing you down. You could not see the kart infront (no rain lights) there was so much water hitting the visor. I don't know if you heard the Pirelli chap talking, he said something like 85litres of water per second coming off each tyre of an F1 car at 100mph.

    I believe Gasly said it was showing his delta was still like 4 seconds too slow, but regardless of whether he was going too fast or not under double yellow, the tractor should never be there when the cars are not bunched up before the safety car yet, even red flag, otherwise what's the point of SC, might as well just do VSC - also FIA should have seen where every car is on the track at that point and would know Gasly is not caught up yet. If Sainz went off there, that means Gasly had the same probability and it might happen even at lower speed. It is absolutely unacceptable from FIA.
    In short, Gasly's pace probably increased the chance of accident, but doesn't mean he would 100% be safe if he drove slower while the tractor is out and certainly doesn't justify the tractor coming into the track.
    Great content btw Will!

    A lot of drivers in radio clips said the grip was completely fine, so even in that state the intermediates were fine. The problem was purely visibility, so if they then put on wet tyres that shift even more water than the inters it's going to get even worse, and even slower cos the inters had enough grip as is. For once the FIA was right with the postponement, they need to get drainage sorted on that track before next race cos it's ridiculous.

Hamilton said its extreme wets conditions and then vettle and Latifi pit for inters and are 4 seconds a lap faster on new inters. The full wets couldn't keep keep pace with the guys that were on 7+ lap old inters that were loosing time and grip and the rubber wore down. The full wets have no use in f1 at the moment because the tire is useless

    Doesn’t matter how fast Pierre was going, there shouldn’t have been a tractor or crane on the track. Race hadn’t been red flagged at that point so it was out on track too soon
    Edit: when the race is red flagged, all drivers should be accounted for in the pit lane before anything is sent out on track. That should just be mandatory and common sense

      @richeh79 2 роки тому

      @@RO_dude Slight difference. F1 has had fatalities due to instances like this and has safety protocols in place. They are clearly not good enough. Also, it was a yellow flag when the tractor came out. Only changed to red flag as Pierre got to the tractor. But it was a yellow flag when the tractor entered the race circuit. He had literally just gone through the pits to change his front wing under a yellow flag. If its going to be a red flag and you need to go on the track for maintenance or recovery, then you have to make sure all the cars are off the track. To do so with cars on the track is idiotic and dangerous
      Tractor shouldnt have been there. End of. Doesnt matter how fast Pierre was going. It shouldnt have been on the track while cars were on it

    Super Formula runs in wet races far more than F1 owing to the Japanese climate, and they never really seem to have much issues running in the wet.
    I wonder if its because Pirelli can't really get much heavy rain testing done at all, whereas bridgestone has the advantage of being both US and Japan based (firestone in the US).
    F1 cars should theoretically be much better in the wet due to the cars being heavier this year - but they're not.

    The Pierre Gasly incident was his fault but the majority of the fault was on the tractor, because when the caution came out he was already on the power, and as a racing driver you understand that you’re racing until you are done racing, and for that condition having any sudden movement it can cause the car to become unstable so what I believe is that the tractor should’ve not been on the track at that time, and that Pierre was just doing what any other racers would’ve done in that position.

    If they had the option to use wets and didn’t, the race should have continued. Stewards aren’t renowned for making good decisions, they had to come out on wets as mandated then everyone immediately changed to inters since they were so much faster. Crashing at much slower speeds in the wet is safer than plowing into a wall at higher speeds

  • @550LMS
    @550LMS 2 роки тому

    The track actually wasn't all that wet. The problem was the spray. This was made very clear after 1 racing lap when Max wanted to come in for inters but couldn't because he'd be stuck in the field, losing too much time to Leclerc. Vettel did pit and was fastest. It was inters, no standing water...just spray being the issue.

    Regards the tractor incident. I think that’s a failure on the process of being under a double waved yellow in f1. When under a double waved yellow the guys should be going to a delta for their spilts and no faster. His splits for around the section where the tractor is can be made much slower to control his speed.
    At the moment in order to succeed you have to not really respect the yellow or double yellow and go as fast as you think you will get away with if the stewards are to look at it. F1 drivers and teams will always do that then complain about safety after.
    F1 races in the rain really annoy me. In some ways I’d just like to see them continue even only if 6 cars make it to the line. If that’s safe. Sometimes I think f1 needs to be to safe when compared to rally our other forms of Motorsport but they also go at higher speeds so it’s a tough one.

      I went for the same scenario right after the race, and there was quite a lot of aquaplaning involved in.
      Problem with AMS2 is its horrible performance in rain in VR. I have to go down with particles or it is stutterfest - which kills the immersion.
