In Norwegian restaurants Italian and American Pizza is usually used to describe two types of Pizza styles more than representing specific pizzas from each country, with the main difference being that the Italian pizza has a thinner crust and often is more minimalistic in the topping where the American Pizza has a thicker crust and more cheese and toppings. Although, the actual difference might vary a little depending on each restaurants own perceptions.

I'm always amazed at how Tyler is able to both find letters where there are none, and completely omit letters that are there. A good rule of thumb for the Norwegian language is that we pronounce most of the letters in any given word. Of course we have some silent letters, but this primarily happens when you have specific letter combinations at the beginning, or the end of certain types of words, and it is extremely rare that a vowel is silent. A quick, and dirty guide to pronounce Peppes in Norwegian: Say the first name of the character Pepé Le Pew, and slap an s at the end. In English the correct spelling would be Peppe's Pizza, but the apostrophe is almost never used in Norwegian, so we just add the s at the end of the name.
We do have both Subway, and Starbucks in Norway.

Yep. It's true that Norway didn't have pizza until the 70s. When it first came people were skeptical of melted cheese - because that wasn't something we did back then.
Also, most places that serve pizza tend to copy the style of Peppe's. Yes, you can find other styles too, like italian - but they tend to be slightly different in concept (Less takeaway, more sit down with a glass of wine)

In 1961 my family invited all my class mates (4th grade) to an Italian restaurant for pizza. No one had seen a pizza before and we had to order spaghetti, which they did know about, for those who wouldn't eat the pizza. I spent half my life living in Seattle and there are lots of Starbucks here. I've been to all these places.

Egon is like a "middle-to-low" tier restaurant. It's not really fancy, but it's not a fast food place. The food is okay, but due to the large menu some dishes tend to be better than others.
The concept that made them "stand out" from other restaurants is that you order at the bar, and pay up front, then they serve your table. (Rather than you waiting around for a waiter)

Interestingly Peppe's Pizza does serve "a lot of different style of pizza" - their main and longest running style they now call "Chicago style"
That said, anything served over here will be "Norwegianized" - but in general we tend to serve large pizzas with relatively thick crust.

Big Bite is a lot like Subway (we do have that chain in Norway) and their menu is quite similar. They are often (but not always) placed in shopping malls. Personally I prefer Subway.
There are a lot of Norwegian restaurant chains, but sadly very few Norwegian restaurants serve traditional "Norwegian food". Most serve things you will find anywhere else in Europe or US. If you want to eat traditional Norwegian food you usually need to find some local place that is not part of any chain. Then you might find more tradiotnal Norwegian food on the menu along side the interntional food everybody serves (like burgers, pizza and pasta).

1970 is crazy early to find a pizza place if you where in Denmark. I didn't even know Norway had a thing like this in 1970. I didn't see a pizza take away place until 1991 here in Denmark. First time i saw a burger place was in 1987 or so.. MacD was a Copenhagen thing back then. And even when BK and MacD turned up i only tried them when i was in a car and we went out there.. These places are always outside of town close to where truckes stop. So when i went to diffent MacD in my home town they had been there for 15-20+ years before i saw them... So those places was only used when im germany. It's not like in England where it's mostly in town center...

So in the 70's nobody would have been down with burhera and pizza.. When they came in the late 80's and early 90's i think people was just about ready for it.. I tried a fryse pizza at a friend's place. Frozen supermarket pizza, and that was so unique to a 14 year old i went home and told my mum about it.. But it stayed a rare thing until i moved nearer Copenhagen in 1988. Thay was when burges and pizza became a thing you new you could just go and get. I think before that it was a restaurant thing where you was in there for 90 minutes or more.. But all that stuff never became a normal thing until the late 80's.

A bit disappointed that chatGPT got four Norwegian chains down, then went for those global chains. When it comes to Norwegian pizza chains, the holy trinity (that I know of) is Peppes Pizza, Dolly Dimple's and Pizzabakeren. Peppes is the more fine dining out of them, Pizzabakeren is seen more as a cheap fast food joint, Dolly only has a few resturants in a few towns but as someone who grew up near one, its the best.

Egon is good/ok+ all round restaurant, but there are many more smaller chains like American style Steakhouse and independent one-offs that i would prefere localy..
The last decades there has popped up fancy gourmet restaurants everywhere. Where you eat a Tiny "pice of art" for 500 kr a dish and you need like 7 dishes/plates to get full..

American Style pizza would be the types that aren't the other types. :p F.x Italian is thin bottomed, minimal crust as standard, so American Style is often thick with crust.
Peppes is definitively the oldest and most revered on the list. Most other pizza restaurants aren't good at keeping their product quality stable. Peppes usually have the same great quality everywhere.
Tip on pronunciation in Norwegian.. Don't skip any vowels. It is like PeppEhs
Egon is in that odd position, top of the cheap ones or bottom of the better restaurants. Their quality varies a bit too much from place to place, so they don't have a common training system, just a set of recipes and hired chefs. Their sandwiches are usually great (for Norway). High End Restaurants are mostly solitary places or have like 2-5 locations; not like fully blown chains, though this might be slowly changing.
Big Bite Submarines is sort of Submarine rip off i.m.h.o. I think their fillings, at least where I tried a sub, where of lower quality.
There is a Kaffebrenneriet in Fredrikstad. I don't like their locale. They haven't done enough to dampen sound, so the chatter of people gets really loud. Their coffee is fine, but not sterling.
Starbucks haven't spread much in Norway so far. They're new.
Domino's went bankrupt in Norway, but got bought up. They're doing better now.
Should have been on the list:
The immigrant run Kebab House. Is it a chain? Is it a mafia? No one knows. Their Kebabs are good. Some of them also make pizzas and burgers, some don't.
Big Horn Steak House, though I don't know how well they're doing post-corona. At least one in every major city/town. They're the most upscale chain and attempt to look the part. People tend to dress a little better before they go there. I don't think they formally demand a tie, but that's still what it feels like when entering. Serving staff in pressed pants, white shirts etc. To be fair though.. that's how they run it in my town.. elsewhere? I don't know?
Pizzanini; used to be a bit larger as a chain, currently only have 4 locations. Hoping they'll resurge. I think their pizzas are on average better than Peppes, but that might just be from being small and focused.
Two names worth mentioning, pure take out fastfood places; Jafs (Bite) and Kysten Rundt (Around the Coast; where they are, not what they serve); hot dog plates with potato mash, burgers, pizzas. Not top, not horrible.. they're franchise chains that absorb small stand alones all around Norway. Many of us get a quick burger at either of those.

    - Peppes is ok, but a bit pricy. It's both sit-down and take-out (with or without delivery). There are typically way better options for value from standalone pizza joints all over the place.
    - Egon is garbage. Pricy garbage. Their cooks don't cook, they just assemble food. Their restaurant at Tyholttårnet (the tower from their wiki page) once got a 2/6 (Yes, we use dice to depict quality. It's weird...) by some food critic, with an asterisk explaning that included a +1 for the view. I have to agree with that one. Their pizza buffet is ok value if you are lucky enough to come over fresh pizza, and that the kitchen is on point in restocking the buffet when it runs out.
    - BigBite is ok, but again a bit pricy. All that advertising costs a fair chunk of money. I guess you are right in that it is Subway but better. I live a 5min drive away from the original one, and I have to admit that I often buy a sub there when shopping at the shopping center it is located at. Definitely a better choice, imho, than the other typical fast food joints.
    - Kaffebrenneriet ("The coffee burnery") is just like your "everyday neighbourhood (but it definitely isn't") coffee shop.
Personally, I'm more of an independent eatery person. I'm lucky enough to live in a small city with a perhaps surprising variety, both in the city center and outside. Somewhat authentic Indian, Thai, Vietnamese, Mexican, "modern traditional" Norwegian, etc, etc, in addition to the "millions" of burger and pizza joints.
Other Norwegian chain restauratns include: Sabrura ("sushi and sticks" - the latter being fried or baked chicken, typically packed for lunch, offers both buffet and a la carte), Sot (burger join, "but better"), Kompis (another one), etc.
And we have gotten some Michelin star restaurant in the later years, if that is your jam. All-in-all, there are some great options here in Norway, in every price category :) And some terrible ones... :P

I'd say Grandiosa is better than Peppes actually, reason being they have frozen dough and stuff. Not very good. Domino's is pretty good in Norway actually. At least they make their dough on the premisses. Egon is pretty bad as well, it's like a family place. Not very good food, just meh/ok kinda thing. BigBite is like the poor worse cousin of Subway. Subway's way better.

These (Peppes, Egon etc) are *NOT(!!!)* restaurants. They are bistros at best and their food is extremely basic. We do, however have a *METRIC* ton of *EXCELLENT* _actual_ restaurants in Norway.

Egon is as you said a solid restaurant with a bit of everything. (6-7/10 kind of place)

And you draw this conclusion based on the existence of an american restaurant chain? I think most people prefer Italian pizza - anywhere in the world. For every Peppes pizza, there are ten others that serve pizza with thin crusts, and they are cheaper too.
