  • @jamesv2811

    I love the idea of something high revving, but I wouldn't underestimate the wear at sustained high rpm due to the forces involved with the piston speed... depends on replacement budget. I don't think it being a cast iron block engine makes sense, so quite a few engines ruled out there. An alumium block LS makes the most logical sense, but please don't do it, too boring now 😅 Something small and turbo is just going to melt IMO. 458, and just prevantiatively maintain it and you'll have something incredible. Audi/lambo V10 can take some abuse, maybe that makes more sense really. 4 rotor would be a dream, but you'll have to turn into an enguine builder during your learning journey.

    • @jankortelandwatersport8483
      @jankortelandwatersport8483 Місяць тому +1

      Thanks for this excellent information. I'm a bit concerned about the turbolag on a small displacement, because we need the low end torque to get the boat on plane. What do you think?

  • @Lsx_Penguin
    @Lsx_Penguin Місяць тому +12

    VIPER V10 enough TQ to send it to the moon and all the displacement to run it forever with little maintenance. There is also the when in doubt LS swap it with a procharger kit for specific marine applications.

  • @jamesmchenry4708
    @jamesmchenry4708 Місяць тому +7

    I know they've done rotaries in light aircraft, which demand constant revs, and that The Twelve Rotor (currently owned by Rob Dahm,) was a custom unit meant as a marine engine. Figure a 20B or a 4-rotor could be built to make enough power reliably - heck, there's 13Bs making 500+hp. I also know people have also gotten a lot of power reliably out of Honda K-Series engines, which should be reasonably lightweight and can be built to get a lot of revs. Either will have to be turbo and modified to get 500+hp, other than maybe a 4-rotor...which will generally be a custom build anyway, as Mazda themselves only built those for racing.

    • @jankortelandwatersport8483
      @jankortelandwatersport8483 Місяць тому

      Now we're talking. Are those engines around? And what about spare parts?

    • @jamesmchenry4708
      @jamesmchenry4708 Місяць тому +2

      @@jankortelandwatersport8483 Honda K-Series engines are very common, in everything from Civics to CR-Vs. It's a matter of finding the right one and figuring out which aftermarket parts to use - there's a huge knowledge base out there, and someone's used a highly hopped-up K-series in a Jet Boat. They need modification, but there's a lot of guys making high-three and even four-figure power numbers out of 2.0 and 2.4L K-series Hondas.
      The 3-rotor Mazda 20B engine is a good deal rarer, only sold, I believe, in Japan, but people build 20Bs and 4-rotors out of 2-rotor 13B parts and custom items. They're going to have eccentricities due to being rotaries, but should make a really interesting and exotic build.

    • @jankortelandwatersport8483
      @jankortelandwatersport8483 Місяць тому

      @@jamesmchenry4708 Thanks. All turbocharged I guess?

    • @jamesmchenry4708
      @jamesmchenry4708 Місяць тому +1

      @@jankortelandwatersport8483 Yeah, most guys making big power with a 2-3 rotor or a K-series are turbocharging them. It seems like you can maybe get mid-to-high 300 HP numbers on a K-series Honda Naturally Aspirated, but that's kind of it, stock they make around 200hp-220hp in the high-performance applications (Civic Si, Integra Type R). The guys making 500-1000+hp are turboing them.
      The 13B was an optional turbo from the factory, except for in the RX-8, and made around 200-270hp stock depending on the model, not exactly sure what's reliable max power nowadays since the engines are so quirky. The 20B was only sold in Japan in the Cosmo, and made around 270hp in stock form, but because rotaries are _kind of_ modular, people have built them using 13B parts and custom intakes/exhaust/cranks or stuff from 20Bs. Mazda themselves only used a 4-rotor engine in race cars, so people with them in street/track cars built them themselves.
      I'd advise looking into the aftermarket for both engines and especially connecting with enthusiasts of those cars/engines if you want to build either type. Same with something like a Lambo/Audi engine, to be honest.

    Jankees, for stability I will definitely go for the double zdrive option, but if you want something that no one has done yet in a Fjordling, then I will put a Rolls Royce m250 turboshaft in it, depending on which option you choose they are available from 420 to 720 hp, then you have one engine from the Bell 222 Airwolf in your Fjordling! (Fjordwolf)

      OK that would be insanely cool and we won't need a heater on board. How does a turbine work with throttle demand? As we use the throttle to control the boats behavior

    • @TheLM1961
      @TheLM1961 Місяць тому

      In a helicopter you control the power of the engine by turning the collective handle, (the amount of fuel that is injected by the fuel pump) how quickly the engine responds to the throttle is the question? in a piston engine there is a lot of resistance when you release the throttle which quickly lowers the rpm, I don't know if that also happens so quickly in a turbine engine, the guys from agent jay z, they have an insane amount of experience with turbine and jet engines and run race boats with these engines, they can tell you exactly how these engines respond, you can ask them, I am very curious how the project will turn out, good luck.

    • @TheLM1961
      @TheLM1961 Місяць тому

      @@jankortelandwatersport8483 yes you can simply fit a disc brake on the output shaft, i expect that it will only be about quick changes in rpm and power to control the boat, because the engine is a split shaft design, this way you are only braking the output turbine, while the turbine driving the compressor still has full momentum and at full throttle, so i expect a quick recovery of power also when you release the brake, in theory it seems to work to me, but will it work in practice? the only propeller turboshaft powered boats i know of are the unlimited hydroplane, and the big cat offshore boats, but are not really a good comparison to predict the outcome, interesting but risky.

    • @TheLM1961
      @TheLM1961 Місяць тому

      suddenly i see the problem why it wont work, all turbine boat applications have one thing in common, all these engines are started in gear, its start and go, there is no way to engage the gears in the zdrives, these engines idle at almost the same rpm as at full throttle, only at idle there is no power available, so shifting at 6000 rpm at idle, will happen with a big bang and immediately stall the output turbine, it all becomes very complicated then, i have only one thing left to say Lamboling!

    There was a guy in the Netherlands, I even think you know him, (on UA-cam as phantomlspower) who built a LS engine in a Phantom 21 with Bravo One, Black Hawk and later on a IMCO drive.They achieved 557 crankshaft hp and reached a topspeed of 95mph/6500rpm with a Mercruiser Black Hawk drive plus 29P props. Later on they mounted an IMCO drive. I don`t know what the endspeed was with that drive. That could also be a good engine choice. Success with the renovation/transformation,

Compared with some of the engine options you listed you could have 2x 1000hp Barra engines running latest generation turbos and Haltech! I’m a gm guy but am biased towards the Nissan rb as a favorite! But my suggestion as a marine engineer would have to be the Aussie Barra engine! Check em out! They effortlessly make 600hp! And there’s not really much effort to double that! If you want more than that then all you got to do is ask! Everything is available for these! Compared with some of the engine options you listed you could have 2x 1000hp Barra engines running latest generation turbos and Haltech! Looking on UA-cam for Barra tuning there’s plenty! and one I’ve been watching a heap and think is pretty well put together is explicit racing! Check em out! if you’re interested. Regardless of the engine and if the hull permits, a surface drive can’t be ignored! This may be one of the best reasons to ignore everything about an inboard and reason for an outboard!

    @miketee2444 Місяць тому +1

    Considering a boat really needs big end torque to pull the kind of prop a person needs to go fast, none of those options are feasible. Plenty of people spend a ton to reinvent the wheel. I'd start with what works. Chevy or Merc is king of big power over 5 grand all day long if you've got the fuel. What about a merc quad cam? The Euro. Junk will be melted down before a BBC is even loosened up good. A rotary is just a joke in a boat. Maybe talk jet turbine and I'll be on board.

      @jankortelandwatersport8483 Місяць тому +1

      With the Merc QC4V we will hit the moon so there is a limit in power. I think 500-700hp and we would really need to figure out the propulsion torque like I said with two drives for example. It's a small and short boat so we would need torque, yes, but it also planes with a 60hp outboard. Torque would more be an issue with turbocharged engines maybe? All ideas welcome

    There is a big difference between Automotive engines that are in a car than there is between an automotive engine that is in a boat usually like if you buy a Mercury 5.7 it is a GM 350 5.7 the only difference between those two Motors is that the ones that are built for mercury one they have a little bit better work done in the ceiling compartment and they usually usually have a little more torque in a little higher power than you would find in the exact same motor you would in a car because of the fact of where the power band is
