    I know it’s too late, but this may help your listeners... A cantilever auger is the way to go. It’s about 1/3 the size of a golf cart and rents for a little more than what you rented that for. It’s on wheels and small enough to roll up in the back of a truck, but large and heavy enough with enough power to easily drill holes. I drilled about 25 holes in 4 hours. The weight of the unit also makes it stable enough to take any sudden jerks from catching the occasional boulder while digging.

      I should’ve used that one haha. This auger kept slamming into the side of my leg. I’ll keep it in mind for the next time I’m digging holes.

      Not planning on doing a tongue and groove set up though. I'll set up a top and bottom board with maybe some bracing and I'll staple the wire on the inside of the fence. At least that is my current thoughts. I don't have a slope to deal with though. Also leaning towards using pressure treated 8 foot 6x6 that are 42 inches in the ground, may add the wire on the outside of the fence as well for predators.

Once my Home Depo auger hit my clay layer the auger didn’t like it and just spun, I returned it and explained what happened and apparently they have a clay bit but never offered it which surprised me knowing that all of the soil around north Texas is clay after 6-10”. • @thejadeforest3189
      @thejadeforest3189 2 роки тому

      Thanks. I like your idea of having it semi private. Are you planning on having the wire panel with the tin panel over that…or just a tin panel? I would just make sure the tin is securely fastened to account for wind. The wire obviously has no issues with wind blowing thru it.
      I think the wire would work great as a trellis…might do that myself in the future. Some kind of ivy would be really pretty. Should work well as long the bottom portion of the wooden panel is not touching the ground, causing rot.

    I've been wondering about that exact solution for dealing with the gaps under the fence where the yard slopes. I was considering cutting the wire extra long so it would go into the earth a bit.
    How did you secure it to the bottom of the rotboards? Did you cut a dado under there too?

    • @thejadeforest3189
      @thejadeforest3189 2 роки тому +1

      I wanted to be able to use my weed eater under the gap wire. So for me, I wanted a small amount of clearance between the bottom of the wire and the ground.
      I simply nailed two nails to each rot board and hung the wire from them. Then I bent the nails up so the wire wouldn’t fall off.
      If you did want it to go down in the earth, seems like it wouldn’t be too difficult to just dig a tiny trench for the wire to rest in.

    • @thejadeforest3189
      @thejadeforest3189 3 роки тому +1

      I assume you’re talking about just attaching the metal panel with no boards. If that’s right, I don’t see why it wouldn’t work. Chain link fences are unrolled and then stretched with something like a winch so there is no sag. Then they are held on by little metal ties that wrap around the post. I don’t see why you couldn’t wrap the ties around these panels instead. Still, you might just buy one panel to experiment before you have all the material laying in your driveway! Good luck!

    How has this fence held up over time? Have the metal panels given out from kids pulling or weighing it? How have the dado grooves held up? Any 2x4's snapped at the thinnest section?

    • @thejadeforest3189
      @thejadeforest3189 Рік тому

      The metal has not given out and is still very sturdy. I don’t notice any rot or anything in the grooves.
      One problem I did have was some of the 4x4 posts twisting from not being sufficiently dry before I installed them. It’s pressure treated lumber.
      The fence still works fine, but I didn’t realize it would do that. You can see what I am talking about in my “1 year Follow Up” video which is in the description of this video.

      Maybe 30-45 minutes per panel. Some went better than others. I think I spent 4 weekends and then probably another 15 hours to get the entire fence built. That includes digging and setting poles though.
      Of course that doesn’t include staining, which I did a while after building the fence. I have another 1 year follow-up video if you want to check that out. The link is in the description.

    Hey Jade Forest, great video, I like you have watched a library of videos, and researched prices of materials. I picked up the first load of lumber today. I'm planning on doing 1&1/2 acres. But with the price of materials just doing 491 ft first. I heard you say you had a couple of 4x4s twist when they dried. I haven't seen your update yet, will after this. How bad? I saw a response from another viewer about cutting the dado in the 4x4 my thinking is the top and bottom 2x4 frames help to keep the uprights straighter. So my inquiry is were the 2x4s wet when you did the dado? I know cutting pressure treated lumber while wet put a strain on my crosscut saw building trellises for grapes and blackberries. Did you have any issues? Again great job and cudos for credits and the links of other inspiring DIY'S Just a note, I priced 40 16ft cattel panels at Tractor supply on Saturday 5/20/23 $28.79 per, today Monday the price is $34.99 go figure.

    • @thejadeforest3189
      @thejadeforest3189 Рік тому

      Hey thanks for the message, I appreciate the kind words.
      Yes, some of the 4x4s twisted, presumably the ones that were still wet. When I get up close to the fence I notice, but further away it’s not an issue. Structurally it is still sound.
      Also, I didn’t properly stabilize my 4x4s when I poured the concrete. This caused each post to slightly shift when the concrete cured. So each panel is very slightly different. One reason why I didn’t dado my 4x4s but you would most likely do a better job than me.
      My saw didn’t have any problems with it. Still works fine. Rural King and Tractor Supply both have the panels.
      Good luck!
