The old restaurants include Antonello Ristorante, Gandhi Indian Cuisine, Gustaf Anders, Planet Hollywood, Restaurant Horikawa, and The Village Farmer. Antonello Ristorante is the only original tenant that remains. Planet Hollywood shut down and became Morton's. My wife and I used to eat at the Village Farmer all the time. It was a great old-fashioned style restaurant with good food and a good atmosphere, and all of the staff were nice as could be. We were sad when it closed in the early 2010s.
I saw Robocop in that theatre in 1987. I lived off Sunflower and Fairview just down the street and would walk to the South Coast Plaza with a friend and we would just walk around and hang out at the mall, grab quarters from the fountain, play video games at Sears, and eat cheap at the Del Taco. I was 11 and having the time of my life.
I lived in this area all my life and have only been to that theater once. Funny how you remember watching Robocop specifically. I remember watching Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for my friends birthday. I cant recall what movies i watched anywhere, but for some reason i remember that specific movie.
OMG! So glad you came to check out the Village. When I was 6-9 years old, in the 70s, we lived Village Creek, the condos across the street from South Coast Village. That was an AMAZING place for the community. They held bluegrass festivals, and all kinds of other community events in the grassy area in the center of the Village. The "Mercantile" building was a four story, circular mini-mall with little shops all over. I have lots of wonderful memories of South Coast Village. And, yes... nothing has changed since I was a kid. The buildings are as they were back then. Some of the kinds of stores that were there in the 70's include at least 3 different candy shops, a Belgium Waffle house, a DIY Latch-Hook rug shop, children's book store, and more.
Hello Heyman, its soooo nice to see nostalgia..back in the day. That is so so sad about the building and South Coast village. Because the builidings look they do not make them like they used to the construction the concrete and all. Nowadays they do it cheap and things fall apart faster and easier it seems. Sucks. What a nice place. That so so sad. I love Orange County so much.
Used to go a store in South Coast Plaza Village called Gamesmanship for Dungeons and Dragons and Battletech stuff all of the time until it eventually moved inside the mall.
Been to Darya a couple times many years ago. The food was good, the waiters and waitresses were stuck up. If I am not mistaken, there was a Planet Hollywood there as well.
That place was busting in the 80’s. I worked at SCP and used to get my haircut at a place in the SCP Village. Planet Hollywood was nearby. Probably long gone now. Lots of good times back then.
Looking back at them is so strange because you have to wonder what was the attraction? Meccas of consumerism, nothing to do but spend money one way or the other all inside some dystopian bunker devoid of sunlight or fresh air!
Nice casual walk-though of that area. The movie theater used to specialize in foreign movies and older classic movies. It always got good crowds. If you remember the British film "The Full Monty" that became a surprise smash hit, this was the only theater in Orange County that was showing it at the time of its release. They made a boatload of money on it, screenings started at 10AM and went on until 1AM (IIRC) for a few months. That whole restaurant area across South Coast Plaza Drive from the theater used to have a lot of top-end restaurants that did quite well due to the office building clientele across Bristol Street and the hi-end shoppers at South Coast Plaza. At one time they had a "Planet Hollywood" restaurant right on the corner where Morton's is, my younger brother was a valet at the place (contract valet parking). I'd guess the buildings fronting Sunflower Ave. over toward Bristol St will be torn down, too, but there are some north on Bristol towards MacArthur that are pretty busy and might just get a facade upgrade. Morton's Steakhouse is/was VERY hi end, average bill for that place was around $180 (!!!). I think their whole corporation went bankrupt not too long ago, people aren't eating out at those hi-end places as much anymore.
When Blair Witch came out this was the only theater in OC that first week or two that was showing it. Long lines! To bad it closed, O.C doesn't have any "art house/indie" theaters anymore, as far as I know. Regal Directors Cut in Laguna Niguel sort of does
Thair used to be.west cost drum center my the clock tower.for all my drum needs.the guys were very cool people.used to be in Santa Ana on Gertrude street by the railroad tracks and then south cost plaza.🥁no longer in business 😒
my mom, aunt and I used to go to a little boutique in that center when I was in elementary school. I always wondered how it was doing. I still live in Anaheim but never end up going there to just see what is there. thank you for doing this video.
We need you to go to the main South Coast Plaza and let us have it!!! Would love to hear your take on the overall vibe and ambiance there because that mall is Very intimidating to many of us. lol
I know i know i need to go there. Only thing is, Security is the only thing tripping me out since a high end mall there are a ton + armed 1s too i hear in sections. Ill try next week
It's so sad to see no one around...so many places are becoming memories of our past... I was in Fullerton the other day and that place is booming... a lot of their strip malls are very attive.I couldn't even find a parking spot. Yet other places are so empty weird...thanks for bringing these to us...take me on one with you..haha...😂
When you passed Antonello it brought back memories from 30 years ago. I was working for a company that was trying to get a county contract, so we used to wine and dine the local politicians there. Pricey food, but very good. Yes, we got the contract.
South Coast Village was cool back in the early 1970's. My family & I used to frequent the "Beligan Waffle House" restaurant. I also would frequent the movie Theater in latter years, as previously stated, it featured foreign & art house films that were only found off the beaten path. And memories of purchasing concert tickets at the "Ticket Shack" that was located next to the Sears Automotive Center, inside the Sears Appliance Outlet across the street.
Darya is a great place to eat..and mortans steak house use to be the original planet Hollywood, owned by sly stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and bruce willis. I went there opening day. Regency theater has 2 theaters..the other is on beach and warner.
It sucks how they are going to tear all that down and turn them into apartments. Even across the street where the Vons is at, I heard they are going to tear everything over there down too.
That would be tragic as the last time I was over there that section seemed to be near full occupancy and doing well, lots of customer traffic. Maybe just apartments on the backside (west) building that is mostly offices as the Vons fronting Bristol Street would almost certainly be a hit with the apartment residents.
@@crosslink1493 Yeah, the Bristol side is always packed, it's the back side which doesn't get a lot of foot traffic. So hopefully, the front side gets spared.
My daughter and I ate at the Corner Bakery all the time. Brought back fond memories watching this video. Thanks!
Yeah. That Corner Bakery looks like a cool location

That movie theatre is really good they show revivals on Wednesdays. Classic and neoclassic movies.
My buddy says he goes there and likes it there
You’re right. That theater is old. I saw Grease there when it was initially released back in the 70s.
I saw Robocop in that theatre in 1987. That Del Taco for some reason was 1 of my favorites when going to that Sears. It was just diff & cool.
😮

The 4 story building was where? It definitely looks like it hasn't changed. Very 70s looking but i really dont know when it was actually built.
Wow, I remember hanging out there in the 1990s. It’s definitely on life support.
Will be gone next year at some point. Not sure on the theater tho

Not much info on when they were built but looks straight up early 70's to me. Wood slats everywhere like in old malls in the 70's.
Thx this is fascinating. Cheers.
Old school little area

Planet Hollywood i think was where the Morton's Steak House is now? I just seen a pic of the old Planet Hollywood over there. Looked cool
I ate at Darya as well a few years ago. Pretty good food, but yes, it wasn't really the best service.
I would totally go see a movie at this theater!
Old school 3 holer..lol they must play diff movies in the same theater rooms
That place was busting in the 80’s. I worked at SCP and used to get my haircut at a place in the SCP Village. Planet Hollywood was nearby. Probably long gone now. Lots of good times back then.
Planet Hollywood is gone and replaced by Motons Steak House
I saw Star Wars A New Hope in that theater in 1977.
I ❤️ Deadmalls
They rock!

There are a few steak houses too high end for me & Mortons is 1 of them just like Ruths Chris' way to much $$$ for just steak & nothing else.

Yeah modernization keeps taking over vs old school. Yeah It is weird how some locations thrive then others fail

I saw 'The Empire Strikes Back' at that theater way back in the day.
