When I survey a new city for a Gourmet On The Road series, I usually invite recommendations from viewers, and post due diligence and research, these form the basis for what one eventually explores. When I called out for Shimoga, this restaurant received the most recommendations. And those in the know may not be surprised given the fact that Sri Meenakshi Bhavan has been an integral part, actually a pioneer of the city’s culinary landscape for over a century now. The space that it occupies was once the owning family’s ancestral abode and that energy also seems to permeate through the homely old-fashioned decor and the South Canara inspired fare here. The food is tasty, sumptuous and satisfying, made to traditional recipes by cooks, many who have served in the kitchens here for decades. Whilst the benne masala dosae may come as the most recommended dish, the vade, avalakki mosaru, paddu too are as rewarding as I found during a breakfast visit where I also had the opportunity to converse with the restaurant’s third generation owner, Mr Chandrashekar and his daughter, Ganavi.

During a recent visit, I was disappointed about their dosa. Senior staffs have left for their low salary. Quality has come down. Owners don't hear the clients' complaints. It has followed to deaf ears. For you, they have put extra ghee and palya.

Hi Kripal, you just ate world's 2nd best Masala dosa.
The 1st one was made till 5-6 yrs back at same place.
Unlike other places where masala dosa with red spicy chutney inside, Meenakshi bhavan served with Spicy coconut chutney inside. Now they stopped.
Just been there last week - and the idly/ vada and benne dose were absolutely delicious! Melting in the mouth and the sambhar was possibly one of the best ever !! Must visit for sure 👍

I like the Cultural Pride all Kannadiga have for their land. I loved the State Song - Jai Jai KRnata Maate & Red-Yellow Karnataka Flag as Karnataka Rajyostava was celebrated at Grand Scale at M S Ramaiah Management Institute where I work.
Regarding Jana gana mana song Tagore was inspired when heard the mysore state song when he visited Mysore in pre Independence Days Wodeyar kingdom state anthem called Kaayo Sree Gowri was sung all over in schools functions etc Kannada people of Mysore kingdom were not under British rule Tagore was thrilled to hear Indian anthem rather than British anthem which used to be sung in Bengal Delhi Madras Mumbai etc Tagore based Jana gana mana tune in the Kannada song of Wideyar maharaja
Coming to post independence era Most of Kannada patriotic Karnataka state songs always have a line stating love and salutes to Bharath mata
Also Kannada flag is always flown at a slightly lower level to Tiranga as a mark of respect to India

Very rarely have I seen Kripal provide a 10/10 to dishes. In this particular video he has given it to two dishes which makes it outstanding. Will hopefully get a chance to visit this soon
They have prepared good for him. Below expectations. It was good many years back. They will roast too much or else they don't roast properly. Just hype. Rate is like a blore rate.

I used to live nearby in 1979 and used to have tiffen and meals there daily. For meals there was monthly coupan system. You can visit food Street near Gopi circle during evenings. Good akki rotti ragi rotti dose idli carts etc
You should visit Mallige Idli hotel in the railway station road. The hot steaming Palau with mirchi bajji was superb which I had in the morning by 07:30AM. An evening visit to Jewel Rock hotel will also be worthwhile.

Good morning dear Kripal - Was awaiting this vlog 👍 As usual most of your viewers , correctly , guessed the place and their favourites . Wow a century old culinary establishment. Nice to hear that Meenakshi Bhavan itself is a landmark 👍 Now to the part I love the most - The Kitchen tour 👍 Good to note that the daughter is taking forward their legacy 👌 I agree that connection between the eatery and its customers is paramount for an establishment for more than 100 years 💯💯💯 Wow the size of the Vade is massing and glad that you relished it . Yes you have never used the phrase that the interior of the Vada is “Cloud-like” . Vada Sambhar with chutney always makes me drool 👍 Good recommendation by Sharan and whoa you have made a statement that the Vade is one of the best that you have ever tasted . That itself is a massive testament to SMB’s Culinary excellence 👌👌👌 The shape of the Thatte Idli seems to be a bit distorted . Oh ok it’s made in Cup style . Seems to be a delicious Idli especially in combination with the sambhar and Chutney . Literally seems to be finger licking good . Is Paddu similar to a Kuzhipaniyaram ? Being a spicy food lover , I would have loved the Paddu in combo with the green spicy chutney 😋😋 The Avalakki looks like a corn flakes Chivda . I have tried Avalakki before but not with curd . So far Sharan’s reco has been spot on 👍 I agree food for me is the best way to boost my mood . Time to try their speciality Benne Masala Dosa 👍 What would be one or two of the character profile of their BD as compared to some of the other BD you have tried . Your reaction for the Vada was more positive as compared to tasting the BMD ( on a relative basis ) . For sure you love their Sambhar 😋 Great way to end the breakfast with a hot coffee ☕️. Yes, Rajesh, most in Shimoga will be aware of Meenakshi Bhavan, for after all, how many eateries can stake claim to a history of over a 100 years! I enjoyed the benne dosae and vade in equal measure, I was expecting to taste a great dosae going by my research recommendations that didn't make much mention of the vade. Which is why the latter left me surprised. As for the nuances of the dosae, well, each one is special in its texture and flavours, and I have illustrated the same in the episode. Masala Dosa quality has gone down drastically . Looks like cook would have left. It was quite disappointing when I went there during Oct visit. They must work hard to retaining the quality again.

Visited recently for lunch, worst behaviour by staff took order after 30 mins and served stone cold puliyogare , have to beg them to give bill, looks like they are least bothered about business or customers, will never visit again. ..love your vlogs and narration sir..Gn

Waste going there… becoming worst day by day . Nalanda does not improve, they don’t take our suggestions and they never update not even they updated for upi transactions they put lot of oil in every dish. Not one time every time. I am disappointed with their service .

Maybe you should visit the place twice. First without the camera crew (but a hidden camera) and later the second time with the crew and do like a honest/critic review and the second visit would be a proper review.
