I worked my butt off to get my BS inChE; I had zero social life. I only pulled a few all-nighters, so generally got enough sleep, which I always need. Statistical mechanics was the hardest course conceptually. Unit Operations Laboratory was the most work. I think all us students agreed that 50% of our time was spent on Unit Operations, and 50% on everything else. I graduated with a 3.987 gpa, and was ranked 2/361 engineering students. I went on to get a PhD in ChemE (also, lots of work), and then a 30 yr career in R&D. Computers were in their infancy when I was an undergraduate, so we only had access to a clunky mainframe, no PCs. Lots of manual calculations.

I have done my first bachelors degree in biochemistry, and then did second bachelors in chemical engineering with a minor in material engineering. Biochemistry was tough, but Engineering is a whole another ball game. I had to thoroughly understand the concepts and know to use math to solve the problems; it doesnt end there because I was also writing Matlab codes to solve each one of those mathematical models. I had to learn how to function on 3 hours of sleep every night. I remember I used to make two cups of coffee at 8 pm every weekday, 1 cup to keep me up till 2 am and the other to wake me up again at 5 am.

well, i just took this course, for fun, that fun turn out miserable, but yeah, i still enjoyed my degree life and got best score,. so my advices for juniors out there. Just have the passion to learn and so on.
My school does a specialization in Chemical Engineering focused on Polymers and Composites its really fun learning a lot about the dynamical systems of fluids in Extruders and other manufacturing processes!

Any engineering path you choose will have a pretty stressful undergrad, so it's all about choosing which one you'd be happy to suffer in at the end of the day. My undergrad was tough, but it forced me to grow and learn skills that I'm happy I have now. You get the hang of it and I hope I didn't scare you too much. I had no idea what I was doing most of the time and still managed to get through it, I believe with a little bit of passion and dedication anyone can get through it :) Let me know if you have any other questions!
Ugh i'm in in the same situation, i'm in my senior year too, anyways with fear i will study this, (a little advice btw, if your dream doesn't scare ya, is because it's not so big haha, you know two years ago, i was scared as hell when I started studying the IB, and i'm not gonna lie, it was hard... but i even got my Diploma at 35/45! And as Shawn said with dedication and effort you can do anything trust me! :) I find this engineering so fascinating, hope everything goes well for both of us :)

I relate so much to organic chemistry and fluid+thermodynamics being the worst... I'm studying biochemical/fermentation engineering and I had to take these together with the chemical engineering students. Me and my classmates didn't take most of the courses related to these so we were missing a lot of basic knowledge, plus the teachers were some of the worst we've had to deal with during college. Thankfully as far as I know they both have been replaced, but these two courses brought out the worst of me mental health wise. I had to retake both courses, along with a lot of my classmates. It also happened during my 3rd semester, it looks like that's a breaking point for most students in these fields? Anyway, I managed to get my bachelor's last summer with a 4.55/5 GPA and I'm doing my master's now while also studying to become a specialised translator. I'm happy I've found this video :)

@@shawn.builds the problem is not the chemical engineering part, it's the "bio" next to it 😅 if I mirror translated the name of my major, it would be "bioengineering", although what I'm doing is a branch of chemical engineering. It's very specific and multidisciplinary at the same time and became a separate major only a few decades ago.

I'm not too familiar with the realm of Masters degrees, but I do know that it's very important to network with your professors and get involved in extra curriculars so you can have people speak on your competency! I recommend getting in touch with an academic advisor from UBC who can give you the full 101 on what boxes you need to tick off to ensure you get into UBC! Also, start looking at which research interests you'd like to get into, by browsing some of the UBC professors research areas. You can start to tailor your undergrad experience to look for similar undergrad research opportunities at your university. Hope that helps! Shawn
Idk why UA-cam recommended this video but i think this is a sign for me to start doing my requirements again 😅 i'm a graduating Chemical Engineering student of Saint Louis University-Baguio City. I'm taking my last 18 units and i feel all the pressure now. 😅
In my university we received 8 courses per semester but not at the same time, is a new educational model, so intensive. The semester i divided in 3 parts, each one composed by 5 weeks, so we have to learn thermodynamics, organic chemistry, analytic chem (some examples) and more in 5 weeks, too tough!!
@@shawn.builds I study at Tecnológico de Monterrey in Mexico. You enrolled 8 courses in the whole semester, but you received 3 the first 5 weeks, 3 the next one and finally 2 the last 5 weeks. It may seems to be easier just receiving 3 at the same time , but those are courses that usually you could take in 1 semester are compressed in 5 weeks, so the time you don’t have lectures you have to use it to study by yourself, It’s hard at the beginning but amazing!

Chugging absurd amounts of caffeine every day is a trap I fell into too. I'm still struggling with my habits. I got in the 80s in organic chemistry, A- and A. B+ in material and energy balance.
@Shawn • Chemical Engineer now that I remember, for my o-chem II final exam, each student was given a clear chemical in a vial, and 50% of our grade was to figure out what the chemical was. There was only 12 of us in the class because ChemEs couldn't take organic with the general population nor with chemistry majors.. there was no group effort, everyone had their own vial. That was in 1995.

Interesting, we had to do something similar but in analytical. Each one of us got 3 different samples and we had to figure out what's inside. Had to do this every week for half a semester. Each time we stated a wrong answer for a sample, the grade lowered. It was last year. But I imagine that doing this in orgo must've been way more difficult, at least you kinda know what you're looking for in analytical.
I want to apply to, and do Co-ops or internships for a year, but most of my scholarships rely on me staying enrolled back-to-back. I can really only do summer
Summer internships are the toughest. The shortest work term and the one that the most people are available for, so it's a lot of demand and not a ton of supply. If you can ever get around it, I would defs recommend you do some internships. Or at least try to work in the school lab for some extra experience!
Starting second semester of third year, grinding has become something natural for me but it consumes myself a looooot! Reactors, fluids, thermodynamics, organic chemistry aaahhh cool stuff but requires tons of work! After all, do you consider that all the effort done is worth its price? (No parties, low social life, grinding so hard every weekend...)
Depends on what you want to get out of your undergrad.. I figured out in 3rd and 4th year that I’d rather sacrifice a bit of my grades for some semblance of a social life. It requires exponentially more effort to go for higher GPAs which for my goals was not worth it. This might be different depending on if you want to do grad school or not
I'm in my last months of my MEng in ChE (5 years) in Europe and I'm sooo tired. Here we have 5-7 courses/semester every year except when we are seniors we do a 1-year research thesis along with at least 3 courses/semester. The limit for students who should pass a class is 10% (!!!!). As a result, there are a lot of courses where at least 80% of students don't pass because the professors (i.e. in transport phenomena) are deliberately very strict, and so it is very difficult to actually get your degree in 5 years as you should. Sorry for the rant! I just saw the video and was reminded by all this shi!t hahaha best of luck x

I was pretty excited to get into ChemE and had a brilliant first course, but COVID hit and my next courses were disastrous... Since my introduction course, as well as thermo 1&2 were all online with little to no interaction with my professors, I feel like my foundation for my major is pretty weak, and it's made me increasingly insecure about my abilities despite my great start in the major. Do you have any tips or general advice for people who've been through the same situation as me? My 3rd year is approaching and I still don't feel as if I have a clear understanding of ChemE as a whole yet, despite my enthusiasm for the major. My life is pretty balanced now, yeah :) I work regular 9-5 hours, occasionally working a couple hours overtime if I have extra work to do. I don't work on the weekends anymore (except to do extra math tutoring). I find that the "work grind" is a little different because it's not constant stress, but more like meaningful stress towards important problems (if that makes sense). I work out about 5-6 times a week and watch netflix every night, so yeah, I think I rest pretty well. Thanks for the great question Filipos!
As a fellow UBC CHBE student I can tell you this. You got off lucky not having to do it online. It's a mess. Though the new curriculum is great if you like programming since they've added more into it along with more projects
My semester right before graduating was pretty rough but we got off easy since it the pandemic was new. The entire year online must absolutely suck. And omg I would've died with all the programming. But that's good, Python is such a valuable asset to have! I'm trying to learn it now and it's rough :P

@@shawn.builds If you enter in a Automation companies like Siemen or Yokogawa .... working for Refineries U have to deal with Aspen like Softwares ...where code part is already in built .... So being a chemical engineer ...am getting more interest in it ...

Hmm I would dabble in engineering projects which call on different aspects of engineering to figure out which parts you like best! I was part of a STEM program in high school that really showed me a lot of hands on projects and what engineers actually do!
I majored in chem I can tell you organic 1 and 2 is very easy. Once you get to full courses on stereochemistry and conformation analysis in upper year/graduate level and learn that there is a 3D component which needs to be accounted for in mechanisms thats when it gets real

I’m barely passing Calculus 2.......I have crammed the maths but have no idea on what it means....I can do the Maths but it doesn’t feel intuitive....hope to do sth of it soon🥲
Trust me, that's very normal. Chem E is very theoretical and it's really hard to see how the pieces of the puzzle fit together until you start taking some internships...

It differs from school to school based on supply and demand. There are a certain number of seats and applicants for each engineering discipline. At UBC, mechanical engineering is one of the most in-demand programs, so its entry level GPA has raised over the years. There are many other factors like "difficulty," but this is subjective and it's hard to say which is "harder" between the two.
Chemical Engineering is harder. I took statics and dynamics as electives with mechanical engineers. I pulled off an A in both classes and I didn't attend lectures because I had organic chemistry and lab at the same time... I would show up, hand in my homework and leave, they only saw me during exams... the MechE's were like, "Oh, he's a ChemE major, they are really smart and psycho" lol.
I don't know why Indonesia always taught as to have an organization rather than increasing your ability on science My senior on chem eng in Indonesia is always teach me to get organization and he told me that if you want to get a job then just go for organization. And he said that GPA is not important because the HRD wasn't asking it at all I'm introvert, I don't get along with a big bunch of organization, and also this major isn't what i wanted😂 As i can see in outside of Indonesia, there's a lot jobs that seek more on academic achievement than your social achievement without any academic skills It was kinda annoying but sometimes i can't do anything:(
I don't understand. You said you hated and did poorly in some of the fundamental courses, used past exams to know answers on at least one final (a breach of academic integrity in just about any university), and I only heard you mention one class you liked. Are you just in it for the money and prestige?
Lots to unpack here, let me try my best here: 1) lots of past midterms and finals are given to us by professors 2) I only showed some of the courses, I had an overall gpa around 3.7 3) I liked lots of classes! Towards year 3.5 and year 4, capstone, process synthesis, process control, reactor design :) it’s just funnier talking about courses that sucked the soul out of you 4) yes, I like money so thats a contributing factor. I didn’t suffer so that I could go into a low paying career. but I do genuinely love chem E and chose it because it seemed interesting and important! Hope that clears up some of the confusion! Sorry if I mislead you at all!

Hmm i'd say my biggest regrets would be not meeting as many different people as I could have outside of my own engineering program and not joining more student teams. I'd also try to talk to more professors and just network more in general :)

I took 5 years (4 years of school + 1 year internship), I liked the accelerated pace of it bc you can start making money as quickly as possible - I think that's worth it
I talk about this briefly in my newest video but I can make a more detailed video on this. The main difference that chemical engineering is about industrial processes at very large scale. You only take about 3 chem courses in Chem E.

I learn food engineering but I don’t want to work in a factory for a long time. Do you think there are any kind of job related to technical can be worked in office and more flexible. I am so confuse with my choice now.
Process Engineer roles are a good mix of field work and office work I'd say. Some process engineer roles or consultant roles might be office only, but you'd have to be lucky to find those. Research roles would be more office oriented as well.

In my country even I am in process or research role, I also have to work in plant or factory especially when into quality role. After working one year I feel my networking contact is nearly no change and my mindset is not developing much when I just meet people around factory because I have no change to meet clients or partner. Do you have any recommend for my case. Although I think I quite like this major when I still studied in university. Btw, I like the way university treat or teach you. You were learn a lot of things that I did not when I was in university. It is hard for me to work overseas with subjects I got in my transcript. I feel quite loss now.

Believe it or not i am a chemical engineering graduate 2k18, couldn't leave my city for jobs because of personal reasons, 3 years later i kinda forgot most of the stuff, just wanted to ask if there is a way to revise all the stuff so i am prepared for a job interview
there's a lot, but having basic understanding of all your courses is probably good. there's some good youtube videos you could review if you just search any chem e topic

Do your homework. Follow well well the example problems with solutions to grasp concepts, work in groups of you can... But remember to hammer hammer, pound pound, and finish! C's get degrees but A & B's gets jobs... No one at work is going to ask you about the C.

I've got 4 courses next semester: ChemE Processes Lab, Multiple Scale Material Science, Reaction Engineering, and Analytical Techniques II (AnTech I was with Excel but AnTech II is pretty much doing that stuff in MATLab) Shoutout to all my fellow ChemE's! :D

Man I’m so nervous, I’m in my senior year and I rlly don’t know what to do, I’m leaning towards chemical engineering but I really don’t want to spend 24/7 stressing out and doing work
Any engineering path you choose will have a pretty stressful undergrad, so it's all about choosing which one you'd be happy to suffer in at the end of the day.
My undergrad was tough, but it forced me to grow and learn skills that I'm happy I have now. You get the hang of it and I hope I didn't scare you too much.
I had no idea what I was doing most of the time and still managed to get through it, I believe with a little bit of passion and dedication anyone can get through it :)

Ugh i'm in in the same situation, i'm in my senior year too, anyways with fear i will study this, (a little advice btw, if your dream doesn't scare ya, is because it's not so big haha, you know two years ago, i was scared as hell when I started studying the IB, and i'm not gonna lie, it was hard... but i even got my Diploma at 35/45! And as Shawn said with dedication and effort you can do anything trust me! :)

I relate so much to organic chemistry and fluid+thermodynamics being the worst... I'm studying biochemical/fermentation engineering and I had to take these together with the chemical engineering students. Me and my classmates didn't take most of the courses related to these so we were missing a lot of basic knowledge, plus the teachers were some of the worst we've had to deal with during college. Thankfully as far as I know they both have been replaced, but these two courses brought out the worst of me mental health wise. I had to retake both courses, along with a lot of my classmates. It also happened during my 3rd semester, it looks like that's a breaking point for most students in these fields? Anyway, I managed to get my bachelor's last summer with a 4.55/5 GPA and I'm doing my master's now while also studying to become a specialised translator. I'm happy I've found this video :)

@@shawn.builds yes, I'm from Europe 😁 I'm hoping to get into the pharma industry, but whenever I tell people what my degree is, they have no idea what it's about. The HR departments at companies are not much better, so it looks like it won't be an easy ride. Sometimes I think I'd be fine with whatever just please hire me 😩

@@shawn.builds the problem is not the chemical engineering part, it's the "bio" next to it 😅 if I mirror translated the name of my major, it would be "bioengineering", although what I'm doing is a branch of chemical engineering. It's very specific and multidisciplinary at the same time and became a separate major only a few decades ago.

And wish to pursue a MASc in Biological & Chemical Engineering from Vancouver, and I'd like to know if you could give me some tips. Also, you make great content. Don't ever Stop!!
I'm not too familiar with the realm of Masters degrees, but I do know that it's very important to network with your professors and get involved in extra curriculars so you can have people speak on your competency!
I recommend getting in touch with an academic advisor from UBC who can give you the full 101 on what boxes you need to tick off to ensure you get into UBC!
Also, start looking at which research interests you'd like to get into, by browsing some of the UBC professors research areas. You can start to tailor your undergrad experience to look for similar undergrad research opportunities at your university.

In my university we received 8 courses per semester but not at the same time, is a new educational model, so intensive. The semester i divided in 3 parts, each one composed by 5 weeks, so we have to learn thermodynamics, organic chemistry, analytic chem (some examples) and more in 5 weeks, too tough!!
8 courses in 5 weeks is crazy. I can't really imagine absorbing anything that fast
@@shawn.builds I study at Tecnológico de Monterrey in Mexico. You enrolled 8 courses in the whole semester, but you received 3 the first 5 weeks, 3 the next one and finally 2 the last 5 weeks. It may seems to be easier just receiving 3 at the same time , but those are courses that usually you could take in 1 semester are compressed in 5 weeks, so the time you don’t have lectures you have to use it to study by yourself, It’s hard at the beginning but amazing!

Chugging absurd amounts of caffeine every day is a trap I fell into too. I'm still struggling with my habits. I got in the 80s in organic chemistry, A- and A. B+ in material and energy balance.
@Shawn • Chemical Engineer now that I remember, for my o-chem II final exam, each student was given a clear chemical in a vial, and 50% of our grade was to figure out what the chemical was. There was only 12 of us in the class because ChemEs couldn't take organic with the general population nor with chemistry majors.. there was no group effort, everyone had their own vial. That was in 1995.
That's just absolutely bonkers. I thought my final was hard lol

Interesting, we had to do something similar but in analytical. Each one of us got 3 different samples and we had to figure out what's inside.
Had to do this every week for half a semester. Each time we stated a wrong answer for a sample, the grade lowered. It was last year. But I imagine that doing this in orgo must've been way more difficult, at least you kinda know what you're looking for in analytical.
I want to apply to, and do Co-ops or internships for a year, but most of my scholarships rely on me staying enrolled back-to-back. I can really only do summer
Summer internships are the toughest. The shortest work term and the one that the most people are available for, so it's a lot of demand and not a ton of supply.
If you can ever get around it, I would defs recommend you do some internships.
Or at least try to work in the school lab for some extra experience!
Starting second semester of third year, grinding has become something natural for me but it consumes myself a looooot! Reactors, fluids, thermodynamics, organic chemistry aaahhh cool stuff but requires tons of work! After all, do you consider that all the effort done is worth its price? (No parties, low social life, grinding so hard every weekend...)
Depends on what you want to get out of your undergrad.. I figured out in 3rd and 4th year that I’d rather sacrifice a bit of my grades for some semblance of a social life. It requires exponentially more effort to go for higher GPAs which for my goals was not worth it. This might be different depending on if you want to do grad school or not

I'm in my last months of my MEng in ChE (5 years) in Europe and I'm sooo tired. Here we have 5-7 courses/semester every year except when we are seniors we do a 1-year research thesis along with at least 3 courses/semester. The limit for students who should pass a class is 10% (!!!!). As a result, there are a lot of courses where at least 80% of students don't pass because the professors (i.e. in transport phenomena) are deliberately very strict, and so it is very difficult to actually get your degree in 5 years as you should.
Sorry for the rant! I just saw the video and was reminded by all this shi!t hahaha

I was pretty excited to get into ChemE and had a brilliant first course, but COVID hit and my next courses were disastrous... Since my introduction course, as well as thermo 1&2 were all online with little to no interaction with my professors, I feel like my foundation for my major is pretty weak, and it's made me increasingly insecure about my abilities despite my great start in the major. Do you have any tips or general advice for people who've been through the same situation as me? My 3rd year is approaching and I still don't feel as if I have a clear understanding of ChemE as a whole yet, despite my enthusiasm for the major. Ok that was great.But after many years of grind and learning,when you finally graduate and get a job,does life become balanced again?Do you have time to rest go to the gym cook and so on?Or is it a whole other grind once again???
My life is pretty balanced now, yeah :) I work regular 9-5 hours, occasionally working a couple hours overtime if I have extra work to do. I don't work on the weekends anymore (except to do extra math tutoring). I find that the "work grind" is a little different because it's not constant stress, but more like meaningful stress towards important problems (if that makes sense).
I work out about 5-6 times a week and watch netflix every night, so yeah, I think I rest pretty well.

As a fellow UBC CHBE student I can tell you this. You got off lucky not having to do it online. It's a mess. Though the new curriculum is great if you like programming since they've added more into it along with more projects
My semester right before graduating was pretty rough but we got off easy since it the pandemic was new. The entire year online must absolutely suck.
And omg I would've died with all the programming. But that's good, Python is such a valuable asset to have! I'm trying to learn it now and it's rough :P

Hmm I would dabble in engineering projects which call on different aspects of engineering to figure out which parts you like best! I was part of a STEM program in high school that really showed me a lot of hands on projects and what engineers actually do!

I majored in chem I can tell you organic 1 and 2 is very easy. Once you get to full courses on stereochemistry and conformation analysis in upper year/graduate level and learn that there is a 3D component which needs to be accounted for in mechanisms thats when it gets real

Trust me, that's very normal. Chem E is very theoretical and it's really hard to see how the pieces of the puzzle fit together until you start taking some internships...

You need a higher GPA to get to mechanical? I thought chemical engineering is considered more difficult and therefore morr difficult to get into
It differs from school to school based on supply and demand. There are a certain number of seats and applicants for each engineering discipline. At UBC, mechanical engineering is one of the most in-demand programs, so its entry level GPA has raised over the years. There are many other factors like "difficulty," but this is subjective and it's hard to say which is "harder" between the two.
Chemical Engineering is harder. I took statics and dynamics as electives with mechanical engineers. I pulled off an A in both classes and I didn't attend lectures because I had organic chemistry and lab at the same time... I would show up, hand in my homework and leave, they only saw me during exams... the MechE's were like, "Oh, he's a ChemE major, they are really smart and psycho" lol.
I also took circuits with electrical engineers, got an A.
I don't know why Indonesia always taught as to have an organization rather than increasing your ability on science
My senior on chem eng in Indonesia is always teach me to get organization and he told me that if you want to get a job then just go for organization. And he said that GPA is not important because the HRD wasn't asking it at all
I'm introvert, I don't get along with a big bunch of organization, and also this major isn't what i wanted😂
As i can see in outside of Indonesia, there's a lot jobs that seek more on academic achievement than your social achievement without any academic skills

I don't understand. You said you hated and did poorly in some of the fundamental courses, used past exams to know answers on at least one final (a breach of academic integrity in just about any university), and I only heard you mention one class you liked. Are you just in it for the money and prestige?
Lots to unpack here, let me try my best here:
1) lots of past midterms and finals are given to us by professors
2) I only showed some of the courses, I had an overall gpa around 3.7
3) I liked lots of classes! Towards year 3.5 and year 4, capstone, process synthesis, process control, reactor design :) it’s just funnier talking about courses that sucked the soul out of you
4) yes, I like money so thats a contributing factor. I didn’t suffer so that I could go into a low paying career. but I do genuinely love chem E and chose it because it seemed interesting and important!

Hmm i'd say my biggest regrets would be not meeting as many different people as I could have outside of my own engineering program and not joining more student teams. I'd also try to talk to more professors and just network more in general :)

@@shawn.builds now that I remember, for my o-chem final, each student was given a chemical in a vial, and 50% of our grade was to figure out what the chemical was... there was no group effort, everyone had their own vial. That was in 1995.

I took 5 years (4 years of school + 1 year internship), I liked the accelerated pace of it bc you can start making money as quickly as possible - I think that's worth it

I forgot a lot of it, don't worry you will always be able to look back at textbooks or previous materials if you need to!
What is the deference between BSc chemistry and chemical engineering??🤔
I talk about this briefly in my newest video but I can make a more detailed video on this. The main difference that chemical engineering is about industrial processes at very large scale. You only take about 3 chem courses in Chem E.

I learn food engineering but I don’t want to work in a factory for a long time. Do you think there are any kind of job related to technical can be worked in office and more flexible. I am so confuse with my choice now.
Process Engineer roles are a good mix of field work and office work I'd say. Some process engineer roles or consultant roles might be office only, but you'd have to be lucky to find those. Research roles would be more office oriented as well.
@@shawn.builds I would like work in the environment with more communication and social networking. Am not sure how different my country and yours. In my country even I am in process or research role, I also have to work in plant or factory especially when into quality role. After working one year I feel my networking contact is nearly no change and my mindset is not developing much when I just meet people around factory because I have no change to meet clients or partner. Do you have any recommend for my case. Although I think I quite like this major when I still studied in university. Btw, I like the way university treat or teach you. You were learn a lot of things that I did not when I was in university. It is hard for me to work overseas with subjects I got in my transcript. I feel quite loss now.

@@ffaiq hmm that's a good question. I'll have to do some more research myself but I think alternative energies are gaining a lot of traction! i'd say every chem E industry is VERY important so any which way you choose will be helpful to society!

Believe it or not i am a chemical engineering graduate 2k18, couldn't leave my city for jobs because of personal reasons, 3 years later i kinda forgot most of the stuff, just wanted to ask if there is a way to revise all the stuff so i am prepared for a job interview
there's a lot, but having basic understanding of all your courses is probably good. there's some good youtube videos you could review if you just search any chem e topic

I have some other videos on study tips and things to focus on in my undergrad. Can you specify what your biggest struggles and concerns are?
Do your homework. Follow well well the example problems with solutions to grasp concepts, work in groups of you can... But remember to hammer hammer, pound pound, and finish! C's get degrees but A & B's gets jobs... No one at work is going to ask you about the C.
We were all hopeless! But if we can do it, so can you...
