    Celebrating Burnout Paradise's 10th birthday, we go back and look at the earliest known dev build of the game. This stream is mostly unorganized, but covers most of the map, a few vehicles, and a fraction of the debug menu.
    If you have any questions, please read the FAQ in the comments. If your question isn't answered there, leave a comment and I'll do my best to answer it.

    FAQ:
    Q: WTF is this thing?
    A: This is an Xbox 360 development build of Burnout 5 from November 2006. It's an early pre-alpha build, meaning most gameplay elements are missing, it's riddled with bugs, and if you're expecting spit and polish, you're in for a shock.
    Q: Burnout 5? I thought it was Paradise's birthday?
    A: Paradise is the name of later versions of Burnout 5. At this point in the game's life, they hadn't thought of a name.
    Q: Pre-alpha?! Looks fine to me. Besides, how would you know the game's development cycle?
    A: We know it's pre-alpha because the E3 2007 builds from July - 8 months after this one - are also pre-alpha. That's all the confirmation we need.
    Q: Why didn't you look at every car? Why'd you do x instead of y? Why why why...
    A: It's a 2-hour stream. I opted to look at the map and the cars that are most unique, rather than sit and showcase every vehicle or scan the debug menu.
    Q: So, are there pictures of all the cars?
    A: Yes, there are! imgur.com/a/KEd5N
    Q: How about the debug menu? Will you show more of that?
    A: It's possible I'll devote a video to it, but if so, it won't be soon. Otherwise, no.
    Q: Did Impact Time and Aftertouch work?
    A: Impact Time is automatically activated when you crash and has to be manually deactivated. Aftertouch also works, but isn't really shown in the stream as it's too difficult to hit rivals.
    Q: What's with the Nascar track?
    A: I believe it was used for testing purposes; however, that's unknown at this time.
    Q: Will you do this again soon?
    A: Probably not. This was a special occasion. Normally I can't do streams due to time constraints and other interests.
    Q: Can I get the build?
    -A: Short answer: No. I won't be answering questions about this, where I got it, how much it cost, etc.-
    A: As of Feb 16 2019, the build has been leaked to the public. So as to avoid people getting themselves infected in their desperation, or something similarly bad, I have linked it. You can find it here: www.mediafire.com/file/1m4tm5b9poqg75n/Burnout_Paradise_%2528Alpha_2006-11-13%2529.7z/file
    Q: I have another question that isn't here. Can you answer it?
    A: Reply to this comment and I'll try to work it into the FAQ. That said, if you ask something unrelated or already covered here, you may be greeted with silence.

      burninrubber0 in the alpha version of Burnout Paradise, the cars actually fall apart (just like the P12). But in Burnout Paradise today the cars don’t split apart or crumble into tiny pieces. They should bring back the physics from Burnout 5

    All of the vehicles I could identify:
    Euro Concept: It's the Rossolini Tempesta. Looks identical to the final game All of the cars appear to have simpler beta names, like in earlier games in the series.
    Classic Muscle: Not to be confused with the Burnout Dominator car of the same name. This car has nothing in common with its predecessor, and is instead based on a Chevrolet Camaro. Does not make it into the final game.
    Cop Car: Police version of one of the traffic cars. It's still in the final, but never spawns on the streets to my knowledge. Its engine sound is not in the final game at all, either.
    Euro Supercar: It's the Jansen X12. Identical to the final. Not much to see here.
    Low Rider: It's the Carson Opus, still bearing its Revenge/Dominator name. The model appears to be in a very early state. All removable parts (doors, etc.) are absent and almost the whole car is see-through.
    705 US Muscle: An unknown, unfinished car. It's tough to pinpoint what it's based on since the model is almost nonexistent, only the rear bumper and exhaust pipes exist, besides the wheels and windows. Appears to have already been cut by the time of this build.
    Detroit Racer: It's the Carson 500 GT. Appears to be identical to the final. Its beta name suggests it may have been originally intended to be the Factory R190 GT from Burnout Revenge, as its codename is Detroit Racer, but that idea didn't make it very far.
    US 705 Super: It's the Jansen P12. The rear end looks vastly different from the final, making it have an even stronger resemblance to the Vector Wiegert W8. Its paintjob is also absent from the final. I honestly like this design more and it's a shame they didn't go with it.
    World Racer: An early version of the Krieger PCPD Special. The livery is vastly different, a bit more basic than the final, and the car still lacks a siren. It also has a much deeper sound, unlike in the final, where both it and the Racing WTR have an F1-like V10 sound.
    RWD Sports: It's the Montgomery Hawker Solo. It appears to be in an early state, with the entire car see-through, and you might believe it to be a regular Hawker at first glance, but if you crash, it will return to normal, revealing the Hawker Solo's livery. It's identical to the final apart from a few graphical glitches. The car might pop in and out of existence every now and then.
    B2 Custom Coupe: B2 stants for Burnout 2, so you can guess this is in fact the Kitano Hydros Techno, still bearing its old name. It's in a very early state, with many parts missing.
    B-Team Van: It's the Carson Inferno Van, still bearing its old name. It's the earliest car so far, being just a few metal frames on wheels. Looks like they had only just began working on it.
    US Concept Muscle: It's the Carson GT Concept, specifically its Burning Route variant, the GT Flame. It's almost identical to the final, with only the tail lights being different, resembling older '60s Camaro models more than the Camaro Concept the car is based on.
    B2 Roadster: It's the Watson R-Turbo Roadster, still bearing its old name. Almost identical to the final, except for the absence of any badging on the car.
    Asia Street Racer: It's the Kitano Touge Sport. Identical to the final in design, but it sports an unique paintjob not seen in the final game.
    B1 Sports: It's the Nakamura SI-7, still bearing its old name. Identical to the final.
    B1 Saloon GT: It's the Nakamura Ikusa GT, still bearing its original name. The whole car is see-through, but you can notice the tail lights are different from those seen in the final game, resembling those from a Dodge Charger SRT8 even more than the Hunter Citizen, which is based on said car.
    US Classic Truck: It's the Hunter Mesquite Custom. Identical to the final, but is another car that has a cut paintjob not seen in the final game.
    US Muscle Estate: It's the Hunter Spur. Very early version of the car with many parts missing.
    Oval Racer: It's the Hunter Racing Oval Champ, bearing its Burnout Dominator name. It still uses its Burnout Dominator model, but with a paintjob from the final version, which looks extremely weird on the car. The car does not drive well, it bounces around and is very easy to crash.
    GT Racer: Bearing the name from Burnout Dominator, this car uses the same model as the Criterion/EA GT Racers from Burnout Revenge, as well as the GT Racer in Dominator, but features an unique paintjob not seen in either game. Leftover menu icons in the final indicate this car eventually became the Krieger Überschall 8.
    Muscle Street Rod: It's the Carson Annihilator. It has a different rear end from the final version. You can see why this design was scrapped as IMO it looks quite ugly.. The final version looks better.

    So cool to se what stayed, what dropped off, and what was augmented for the final release. A new lighthouse on Big Surf Beach, a stadium that is not really there, no quarry, no airfield, no Lawrence Tunnel. Awesome!

    • @MatthewDiLeva
      @MatthewDiLeva 5 років тому +2

      XboxBurnoutParadise Yeah, lots of things were either kept, changed up. or removed completely. The lighthouse is now at the Coastguard HQ, hence to the oblivious name, the NASCAR track that would’ve made it but for whatever random reason was removed as we now have that abandoned Lone Peaks Stock Car Track, the Lone Peaks Quarry and Eastern Shore Airfield weren’t even a thing, and the Lawrence Road Tunnel didn’t even start development. This game would’ve been much cooler, but unfortunately got redesigned as the “ultimate Burnout game” and fucked up.

    • @HisameSymouri1995
      @HisameSymouri1995 5 років тому +3

      Airfield didnt exist because the original big surf was an airport island. The nascar track would have been cooler than the crappy dirt one we got. Once I saw the concept/alpha map picture, I was disappointed at what we got....the map was cut in half basically.

    • @HisameSymouri1995
      @HisameSymouri1995 5 років тому +1

      thedarkninja7469 it was being tested to take place of the baseball stadium, but they probably figured that more people would like a small drift area instead of a massive race track. I heard that the actual track was shrunk down to the size of Bristol and was going to be called “coliseum raceway” where the oval racer would make 100% more sense as well as the F1 car.

    • @HisameSymouri1995
      @HisameSymouri1995 5 років тому

      thedarkninja7469 I have an insider at EA and I can get random info about things. But that sounds awesome.....takedown circle. As for the classic muscle, it was transformed into the Carson GT concept. Many people think it’s the cavalry, but the cavalry is a charger and the classic muscle was a 68-69 camaro. The newer version being the Carson GT concept.....or the more rare, steel wheels GT.

    • @HisameSymouri1995
      @HisameSymouri1995 5 років тому +1

      thedarkninja7469 the steel wheels GT was the car that replaced it as the pre order ride, that’s the only real evidence I have. I met some Criterion Devs on burnout back in 2009. The most recent talks I’ve had with the burnout dev team was with Alex ward and Fiona sperry back when 3 fields Entertainment was first formed. We talked about burnout and a bunch of paradise stuff that I can and cannot talk about. I am on Xbox and PC unfortunately, but it would be cool to see what takedown circle is.

    I keep coming back to those debug build videos. Whether it's very early implementations just to say it works, or totally scrapped ideas, some of the mechanics present in those builds are vastly different, ESPECIALLY the crashes.
    Afterburner and Impact Time were implemented and to be honest it would've been cool to have it in the release build, but what caught my eye even more is how the crashes act. The parts twist without it being permanent (look at the wheels at 3:18), the wheels come off with their axles, the car doesn't make hard static impacts when it rolls around, it kinda *sinks* into the surface and comes right back up, almost mimicing soft-bodies the way it absorbs energy... but without the computational struggle.
    It looks so janky, and at the same time it looks more realistic. Just by looking at 36:40 / 40:56 we can see the cars were planned to have MORE dedicated parts even if the explosion of parts itself is unrealistic (no constraints between parts). On the more "finished" cars like at 3:18 we can clearly see the chassis/engine/body parts clearly being seperate from each other.
    At 53:40 we can see how it isnt the car as a whole that interacts with the environment, but the individual parts collide with each other, which looks really buggy here but works TOTALLY different from what we have today.
    It's almost like they had an entirely different vision of the physics, but had to tone it down either because it didn't fit the overall vision of the game, or just because the consoles couldn't run it well enough, because it looks like a vastly different, more physically-based implementation (which is a PAIN to run). The physics of today have "real-time" deformation at initial impact (if slow-mo is activated) otherwise the car acts like a rigid-body object and the deformation just *snaps*.
    I have to clarify this is all just speculation, if you guys have actual facts about the changes and why they happened I'd love to hear them.

      Is more at fault the lack of documentation on the CELL/BE back when this game was developed. Many of the multiplats back in 2006-2008 had to be downgraded on the 360 as well to allow a smooth porting to the PS3. Eventually the PS3 documentation got better and the devs also got more familiar with PS3.
      It wasn't of power but lack of understanding on how the PS3 worked.

      2005 build? What? That'd put it at least 11 months before this one, it'd look and play completely different. Are you able to share any screenshots?
      As for car selection, it sounds like you're trying to select them right off the bat, which will indeed crash the game with anything other than the Euro Concept. Choose it first, then hit back, then B, and you can choose any car without it crashing.

I try learning whatever I can about these games and their potentials, differences between platforms/ports etc etc. But, still, I could swear I saw something about Underground 1 running EAGL, Underground 2 (and some other EA titles) running EAGL 2 (like SSX, I think), MW and Carbon running EAGL 3 and Pro Street running EAGL 4, with Undercover also using it, but a bit modified and with its own physics engine that was very teased upon back then and not many people liked it. Do you know any other games running on this Chamelon engine you mentioned?

      Accompanied by how different the map is in comparison to the final one. At 19:52, there was a NASCAR track that was supposed to be in the final game, until it was cut due to limitations of the map’s size. The map as a whole was originally a _lot_ bigger than the final as well. There is a concept version of an earlier map design until it was changed due to the aforementioned issue.
