- The Starz TV series Black Sails is a prequel to Robert Louis Stevenson's famous novel "Treasure Island." It's a story filled with squashbuckling pirates who dare to wage war against self-described civilized nations. Are you ready to travel back to the Golden Age of Piracy? We'll be joined today by Colin Woodard, the acclaimed author of the New York Times bestseller The Republic of Pirates.

Great video.
Just a few notes about who is who: Israel Hands is also a character in Treasure Island. Ben Gunn is too. Ned Lowe was an actual pirate. A 4th category could be historical representations as the Maroon Queen is based on Queen Nanny of the Jamaican Maroons. Eleanor and Richard Guthrie are loosely based on a Scottish merchant family in Nassau. Finally, the character of Julius was based on the slave revolt leader in the Bahamas, Caeser.
Thank you! Didn’t know about Julius
Thanks. Loved this guest
Thanks for watching! I agree, Colin is awesome!
Good show
I never hear the Billups, billopp name from Bristol an privateer's still on Gwyn Island to this day from early 1600s
I watched the whole series, total waste of time. There is name dropping of some real pirates, as well as the characters of treasure island, but basically its a cartoon type show with constantly impossible things happening written for a modern TV audience. The sets and costumes are great, but everything else blows! Watch sailing ships with their sails billowing out in one direction, while the oversized flag blows a different direction, and then there is the propwash behind the sailing ship! That series is so bad I can hardly believe they made it! let along you are taking the time to review it!
Thanks for sharing! I'm always looking for new movies and TV shows to cover on my podcast, so I feel the need to ask: Are there any movies or TV shows you think did a better job that you'd like to see covered in the future?
@@BasedonaTrueStoryPodcast Not sure what you've done, but Lawrence of Arabia, or Masters of the Air, are good, or Snake and Mongoose, or Ford Verse Ferrari. are all good ones I like.
I stopped watching the series at the begining of season three, but the relationship between Billy Bones and Captain Flint seemed to be going in the direction of the Stevenson book. In the book Treasure Island Stevenson says that Bones was Flint's caretaker in the final years of his life. If the reader wants he or she can read that Bones and Flint were a gay couple and Bones took care of Flint until his bitter end. Maybe its just the romantic in me, but the series establishes Flint as gay and Bones falling into thrall to him.
you're so wrong about Billy in the show ahahha
about Flint, you're pretty spot on
It. Mad me sick . Get the gay shit off TV.
They ended up making flint gay . Wtf . Why do that . They made a god show shit . Do you think we want to see that shit ! We see it everyday . No thanks
