How artists can (finally) get paid in the digital age | Jack Conte

- Опубліковано 29 сер 2017
- It's been a weird 100 years for artists and creators, says musician and entrepreneur Jack Conte. The traditional ways we've turned art into money (like record sales) have been broken by the internet, leaving musicians, writers and artists wondering how to make a living. With Patreon, Conte has created a way for artists on the internet to get paid by their fans. Could payment platforms like this change what it means to be an artist in the digital age?

Patreon has pretty much doubled my income as an artist. Thanks Jack
So how much are you making with 391 subs? I have more than 12.000, it's just difficult for me finding the time to one video per week, so I doubt I'd be able to also do videos on Patreon. How are you earning? Via shoutouts, videos, or what? And how many donate and how much?
Zen-Dragon She is using a different platform. Not everyone use UA-cam.
Thanks for sharing, Eric. That's interesting, which video platform is that I wonder :p
Zen-Dragon Why do you assume it's video? Patreon is for any sort of artist or content creator. There's plenty of people on patreon who have never uploaded a video in their life and still make a healthy salary. UA-cam isn't the end-all-be-all for content creators. It's probably one of the hardest platforms to make a career out of, given the number of people on it.
Also, you have a decent following on here, use it! I know it's a shitload of work but just commit. If you want to make it your career, it will never happen with the attitude of "it's too hard to make videos every week". Some people on here are making fully edited videos every day. Sure you're gonna have to make sacrifices, but there are very few fields where you can become successful without making huge sacrifices. If it's what you really want to do, ignore those thoughts and just commit.
Thanks, I've been uploading weekly content for more than 3 years straight and done lots to promote it. But I also work fulltime (which I've been doing almost 2 years now), and do a philantrophic project, so finding the time to create on another platform is very difficult, and giving up my job is a big risk, I'm finally at a point in my life where I can start a family without it being irresponsible... but we'll see... maybe Patreon or some other platform is worth it.
Wait ,HE created patreon?
Endy Kenny yes
He co-founded Patreon. If he was not involved, you wouldn't have known about it. So, it is a work of 2, not just one, and now more than 100 people working on it. It always about the team and not just who write code (I don't work for Patreon, but I write code ;)
You say that as if managing and lowering the idea to the earth was not enough merit already!
+Jaime Burbano C. Haha that's a funny way of putting it... he's the CEO. Yes, an engineer wrote the code, as they tend to do, but said engineer didn't launch and run the company. If you don't know the difference, perhaps Google 'business' for a few min or something...
Yup
I remember the days when this guy was in his parents house. He never changed and still the same guy. Mad respect
What an incredibly talented human being. His music is great and I realize it's because he loves the art so much, and by extension the artists and their wellbeing. Absolutely nothing but respect for this guy.
"They are going to be paid... and they are going to be valued." Gave me chills
It's mind blowing to see how many platforms are opening up the "digital economy"! Pity many people don't see VALUE in the arts..
They're cool with sports stars or politicians getting paid millions for minimal contribution to the world at large - but if you play music, paint or create things to help others enjoy their lives, you are looked down on like "get a REAL job!" 😂 Sad...
So change how they think. Prove them wrong :)
yeah, so accurate said!
You can't prove them wrong. In a world of numbers nothing without a number has a value, no matter what it could accomplish.
Mel: Amen to that. I think the corporatization of the arts has a lot to do with that, i.e., people are used to listening to corporate radio, hearing same songs over and over again, and almost forced into "liking" or at least getting used to hearing certain songs, certain styles of music, etc. If we start taking initiatives, like opening our homes to artists--musicians who play house concerts, paintings who show their work at a house party, for examples, maybe we can wean people off of the corporate-created "art" and get people to appreciate real artists and creativity again.
Problem is, too many of us artists keep trying to work with the system. We think we're going to be discovered and some rich guy's gonna save us. Ain't gonna happen. (Not unless you're 18-to-look younger, have a perfect body and are super flirtatious, that is...)
I know what you mean. But the top 1% of artists (musicians, painters, etc) do make a lot of money. And most of the athletes salary comes from television advertisers and endorsement deals.
Some jaded people trolling here. Wow...
This was clearly NOT just a plug for Patreon.
It was very informative, enthusiastic, optimistic, witty, and encouraging.
Hey Jay, how are you doing? I just saw this video, and I decide to contact all the people that comment something in the video. I'm asking for feedback about this youtube channel that we just create. Thank you very much :)
Patreon is an awesome platform for people like me to show my appreciation for exactly the type of content I enjoy most. I quit my cable subscription years ago when I found UA-cam. All the home design and craft and cooking shows I had watched on cable were so bad compared to what I found on UA-cam. Artists and creatives deserve to earn a living too.
his enthusiasm is contagious! love him
ps thx for creating patreon btw
think is the origin of the expression Jacked up.
This seriously broke my heart wide open.
I struggle so much, from the creative writing process, to the instruments I create on, how/where/if I am able to record, where it gets published, if I can or cannot tour, the videos I dream of making....
I Feel so much passion when I watch this, I've contributed at least a dozen views.
Everytime I feel like quitting I re-watch this. One day I will get my first patron video up and can't wait to see how that turns out to be perfect.
Thank you for this inspiring and speaking truths.
so I subscribe to Ted and I always instantly click on a new vid - my jaw dropped when I realised the guy from pomplamoose (a band i always watched back in the day) was about to give a talk - it further dropped to realise patreon is his - fair play man!!!
I feel really dumb, because I know of Jack Conte and Pomplamoose but I never knew he was from it omg
I was listening to Pomplamoose 5-6 years ago and I thought they were great, they still are great. But when I realized that "this bearded guy playing piano" is a creator of patreon service I was really surprised. AMAZING JOB! You literally saved most of UA-camrs after adpocalypse. Wish you best of luck.
I clicked on the vid thinking "don't I recognise this guy from somewhere?", and then it hit me: It's Jack from Pomplamoose, that's awesome! I also watched their content from back in the day :D *high five*
same thing here :D
"whaaat, Jack did patreon?"
literally said it out loud
i was like. wow the guy that made me buy my first launchpad hasn't been active since 2013, and now he is giving a speech on ted. I'm a dj and producer because of this guy
I've been following Jack Conte ever since he made music on his UA-cam channel. I'm so happy to see him on TED! Onwards and upwards, friend :D
Have you been watching what he's been doing lately?
The key is Creating Value, not Content.
Anyone can create stuff...not everyone is creating value.
That is the ONE Thing to focus on.
boink!!
Jack Conte-nt
I still can't believe the same guy I looked up to 12 years ago when I discovered pomplamoose videos, because of his talent, crativity and personality, along with the charismatic and beautiful and... amazing Natalie Dawn, of course, is the same one now I'm still looking up to because he FOUNDED PATREON WTF!!
I didn't know that until today. I'm shook
Jack is just an amazingly avid speaker. He is so passionate. The end of his speech almost made me cry. It fells that Patreon thing is really personal to him and has been created because of total under-appreciation of the artists in general including Jack himself.
My husband and I saw him perform in a small bar in 2007 on one of our first dates and bought his CD and absolutely loved him. We no joke have listened to his older music off and on all these years and talk about him as one of our favorite musicians, not even resizing how far he's come. Then recently we stumbled upon his current band Pomplamoose and fell in love with this band, especially enjoying watching the rockin' keyboardist who is so entertaining to watch, not even knowing it was him. We literally just figured out last night that it's the Jack Conte we saw when we first met! Amazing! I'm so happy to see he's gone so far and I love that we got to experience him when he first got started and still have that CD. Loved him then and love what he's doing now. Keep it up Jack!
Amazing talk.
Thank you for sharing this.
Speeches like these make me want to be an artist just to be at same group of inspired people as Jack.
Congratulatins to TED for choosing so well one more time.
This guys energetic personality is lovely & refreshing! 😁
The greatest motivational video ever made for creators... Thanks Jack😊👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
This is awesome! I love his energy and I love that he is taking this problem and doing something about it as opposed to the usual where people just brush off the arts as not a good career choice.
Love seeing someone's talking so passionately.
TED, you're amazing. This video was truly inspirational. Jack is a perfect speaker to discuss this evolving model of making creative careers sustainable. Thank you!!

Ive been having the most challenging start to my career as a visual artist in south africa. Something about the way creatives were spoken about in this talk gave me life
I love his passion for solving problems
Brilliant talk 👍
I have some health issues that negatively influence my earning ability, so being able to make a living from home would be life changing for me (and my family).
This gives me hope. Seeing how things have changed is very enlightening...
His passion soaks right through his talk.
One of the best Ted Talks ever! This is ingenuity at its best. Thinking of a new way to solve an old problem.

There's something really motivational about this guy. He seems very honest about his passion for creative work even though he's a successful entrepreneur now.

Omg I remember subscribing to his channel years ago and hearing him talking about Patron being launched. It's crazy to think that he's come so far to even do a Ted Talk.
