How artists can (finally) get paid in the digital age | Jack Conte

  • It's been a weird 100 years for artists and creators, says musician and entrepreneur Jack Conte. The traditional ways we've turned art into money (like record sales) have been broken by the internet, leaving musicians, writers and artists wondering how to make a living. With Patreon, Conte has created a way for artists on the internet to get paid by their fans. Could payment platforms like this change what it means to be an artist in the digital age?

Patreon has pretty much doubled my income as an artist. Thanks Jack

So how much are you making with 391 subs? I have more than 12.000, it's just difficult for me finding the time to one video per week, so I doubt I'd be able to also do videos on Patreon. How are you earning? Via shoutouts, videos, or what? And how many donate and how much?

    • @AriTheElk

Zen-Dragon Why do you assume it's video? Patreon is for any sort of artist or content creator. There's plenty of people on patreon who have never uploaded a video in their life and still make a healthy salary. UA-cam isn't the end-all-be-all for content creators. It's probably one of the hardest platforms to make a career out of, given the number of people on it.
Also, you have a decent following on here, use it! I know it's a shitload of work but just commit. If you want to make it your career, it will never happen with the attitude of "it's too hard to make videos every week". Some people on here are making fully edited videos every day. Sure you're gonna have to make sacrifices, but there are very few fields where you can become successful without making huge sacrifices. If it's what you really want to do, ignore those thoughts and just commit.

Thanks, I've been uploading weekly content for more than 3 years straight and done lots to promote it. But I also work fulltime (which I've been doing almost 2 years now), and do a philantrophic project, so finding the time to create on another platform is very difficult, and giving up my job is a big risk, I'm finally at a point in my life where I can start a family without it being irresponsible... but we'll see... maybe Patreon or some other platform is worth it.

He co-founded Patreon. If he was not involved, you wouldn't have known about it. So, it is a work of 2, not just one, and now more than 100 people working on it. It always about the team and not just who write code (I don't work for Patreon, but I write code ;)

It's mind blowing to see how many platforms are opening up the "digital economy"! Pity many people don't see VALUE in the arts..
They're cool with sports stars or politicians getting paid millions for minimal contribution to the world at large - but if you play music, paint or create things to help others enjoy their lives, you are looked down on like "get a REAL job!" 😂 Sad...

Mel: Amen to that. I think the corporatization of the arts has a lot to do with that, i.e., people are used to listening to corporate radio, hearing same songs over and over again, and almost forced into "liking" or at least getting used to hearing certain songs, certain styles of music, etc. If we start taking initiatives, like opening our homes to artists--musicians who play house concerts, paintings who show their work at a house party, for examples, maybe we can wean people off of the corporate-created "art" and get people to appreciate real artists and creativity again.
Problem is, too many of us artists keep trying to work with the system. We think we're going to be discovered and some rich guy's gonna save us. Ain't gonna happen. (Not unless you're 18-to-look younger, have a perfect body and are super flirtatious, that is...)

    • @jansa940
      @jansa940 5 років тому +2

I know what you mean. But the top 1% of artists (musicians, painters, etc) do make a lot of money. And most of the athletes salary comes from television advertisers and endorsement deals.

Patreon is an awesome platform for people like me to show my appreciation for exactly the type of content I enjoy most. I quit my cable subscription years ago when I found UA-cam. All the home design and craft and cooking shows I had watched on cable were so bad compared to what I found on UA-cam. Artists and creatives deserve to earn a living too.

This seriously broke my heart wide open.
I struggle so much, from the creative writing process, to the instruments I create on, how/where/if I am able to record, where it gets published, if I can or cannot tour, the videos I dream of making....
I Feel so much passion when I watch this, I've contributed at least a dozen views.
Everytime I feel like quitting I re-watch this. One day I will get my first patron video up and can't wait to see how that turns out to be perfect.
Thank you for this inspiring and speaking truths.

Jack is just an amazingly avid speaker. He is so passionate. The end of his speech almost made me cry. It fells that Patreon thing is really personal to him and has been created because of total under-appreciation of the artists in general including Jack himself.

My husband and I saw him perform in a small bar in 2007 on one of our first dates and bought his CD and absolutely loved him. We no joke have listened to his older music off and on all these years and talk about him as one of our favorite musicians, not even resizing how far he's come. Then recently we stumbled upon his current band Pomplamoose and fell in love with this band, especially enjoying watching the rockin' keyboardist who is so entertaining to watch, not even knowing it was him. We literally just figured out last night that it's the Jack Conte we saw when we first met! Amazing! I'm so happy to see he's gone so far and I love that we got to experience him when he first got started and still have that CD. Loved him then and love what he's doing now. Keep it up Jack!
