- As the largest city in northern Thailand, Chiang Mai is a must for anyone traveling here for tourism. In this video, you'll discover Chang Mai's Old City, the walled city. Chiang Mai was founded in 1296 and it's the capital of Chiang Mai Province in northern Thailand. The name means "New City" in Thai. That's because back then it became the new capital of the Lan Na kingdom (an ancient kingdom that existed in the area). The city was also very important historically. It's strategically located on the Ping River (a major tributary of the Chao Phraya River), and close to major trading routes.

Chiang Mai is city for tourist , plenty of nice resort , flower land , natural view , unique culture and food that I love but I never visit temple even I stayed there 4 years
IT is a great city with lots of history. Do take the time to visit a temple or two as I know people would enjoy.

I have been to Chiang Mai seven times. This is one of the most accurate and informed videos I have seen. Well done. Thousands of ex-pats live outside the city in places like Doi Sacket etc. I would be very interested to hear their views on retirement in that area of Thailand.
