I saw this concert in Toronto. I was there. Front row, center.
Max is an amazing Electone artist. Hard to believe this was 20 years ago. It feels like yesterday. I still have my original VHS tape which was the source for this uploader.
I would love to convert my tape to DVD.
PRO TIP: Download this video using UA-cam Downloader or Download Helper for Firefox.
Play with VLC Player. Set Aspect Ratio to 4:3 to unstretch the picture.
    ❤ Peace

This is an absolute "Reference Class Playing" ! Pure flawless playing without any of those mistakes-concealing XGs/MIDIs.
A Master of Electone through and through.

Awesome to see this again! My father (Jim Blake) was the video producer for this show... and I was the Division 3 winner that year :) Sent me to Singapore to compete at the International IEF. Video of my Singapore performance is on my channel.

WOW... I was definitely in the audience for Mr. Takano's jaw dropping performance (the Ghostbuster was unforgettable!) in Toronto back in 1993,
Also had the privilege of meeting Claude Dupras at several occasions IT is TOO Amazing you still have THESE VIDEOS! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING THEM ON UA-cam!
I still have a FX-20 at home, with just a few slides not really properly working... but the 'sounds" are still 'connected correctly internally.

I still have my FX-20 and HS-8 in working condition. The motors and belts on the FX-20 need cleaning/replacing after all these years.

@@ElectoneGuy ^^ testing... here, I thought I wrote your a reply a few minutes ago but it has, for now, disappeared... Hmm... this youtube is actually NEW to me. Perhaps my comments are being screened first before they become publicly-viewed... ^^ but would definitely like to get in touch with you, My. Electone Guy... You are probably the ONLY person on earth that I know who still OWN two Electones!!! (AH, hmm, I think I still have HS 8 books, will check my boxes... I for sure have a YEF winning song written by my teacher perhaps 30 years ago... I still have the hand-written SCORE and the HS-8 Registration pack, but definitely NO HS-8/HX-1 to play on/with!! OH MY... )

AH, so the second message did appear... ) , so, it means my first reply didn't go through, hence, I am here again... HOPE I don't sound crazy to you... lll May I please ask for your email address, I would like the slides to be cleaned/replaced... (The instrument is still totally playable, so sad most models have gone obsolete... but it can LAST FOREVER.) Looking forward to hear from you.

This song uses song 5 and song 6 on the registration disk. Max would loaded song 5 at the start and then had song six ready to go. At 2:49 he simply preses play to load song 6 registrations.
    Cheers,
    Tim

I saw Max a few times when Yamaha brought him to the UK - he's a total genius. Such a shame Yamaha don't sell organs here anymore as it means he doesn't come and play for us now.

I think he hits the "lower " button on the mdr at 2.49 seconds.if you watch his hands closely after that ,you can hear some backing he's not playing "live" .He had recorded this and he's playing the mdr for his auto reg changes .So that's why he presses the mdr button .Thank you

+Karen Wilson I assure you he is absolutely playing live.
As a past player of Electones myself I know exactly what happened here. This is a recorded chord progression.
The MDR can be used to load in new presets too, lets not forget here, this is only a 1.44MB floppy disk. It had NO capability to store or playback actual 'backing' music as you suggest.
Read it yourself here, "captures data not sound" usa.yamaha.com/product_archive/music-production/mdr3/?mode=model
The ELX-1 (played here) had at the time an MDR-10, but still only used a meagre 1.44MB floppy diskette. If anything, it's used to play back chord progressions underneath his performance to add depth. Any professional organist knows, this is a tool and indeed a feature used by many in complex pieces like this one.
Everything you here is completely coming from the Yamaha ELX-1 and Max (Masashi) Takano is a legend demonstrating this wonderful instrument to it's absolute best.

Janya - have you tried both? The best organists not only have both hands working overtime, they have to think about/change the sounds they use during the piece they're playing, using their left foot to play the bass pedals and their right foot to adjust the expression (not to mention some keyboards have touc hsensitivity and can be used for extra volume/differing levels of vibrato). There's a lot to think about!

What does he do at 2:49 with the MDR? Anyone?

I believe he is calling up "Next song" or Next set of memory. Since he actually play manually (using his feet to switch memory), for ELX (EL-xx generation) has only 1 set (16x Memory) load at once, so when he on the last memory, he called up the next song (pressing play) which will load next set of 16 memory, but wont interrupt his current playing until he switch to next memory, only the next set of memory will loaded.
Next Electone model (EL-xxx generation) later equipped "Next Disk" blend directly in-to system, it will be load next song automatically, and you will see the song named "- 2 -" below the song use more than 16 memory.
Later this function blend into song data in ELS generation (like STAGEA), a set of 16 memory pack into "Unit", which can save up to 5 units per data (mean 5units x 16 memory = 80memory), and it will auto loaded following song data's registration memory sequencer.
The current ELS 02 generation, under unit now has 5 "bank" , each bank can store 16 memory, and 1 unit now save 5 bank x 16 memory instead of 1 unit only store 16 memory like ELS01 did. So 1 unit are now 80 memory, and you can create next unit for another 80 memory, I assume it is 5 units x 80 memory = 400 memory max if not mistaken. All in 1 song data.
      Hope you understand my mean.

I think this is a very beautififul interpretation of a nice song. However, I think playing piano is much more dificult than playing organ.

    • @tpmm1
      @tpmm1 2 роки тому

That all depends on what you take into consideration. It's hard to compare instruments. Is it easier to play the recorder than the piano?
