With the share of my time that I can devote to watching your lectures, it sometimes feels as if I'm trying to take a drink from a firehose, but I keep coming back again and again because your presentation makes the information accessible and interesting, and even though it may not be a field where I expect to use the knowledge extensively, it's still fascinating to learn about.

I've been watching your videos since 2013 and from the first, I've wished that I'd had an instructor as entertaining and informative as you. I had been interested in geology as a kid but during my university days in the early 70s I found that the professors were dull and very 'academic'. If they'd had your approach and enthusiasm I may have become a geologist. Thank you for reigniting my interest.

You’re very modest. When you say you will have a small role in the North Cascade Reasearch Team I am again reminded of Jeff Tepper said “..only you could inspire 700 people to care about boron/beryllium issue…”. At our level YOU are the face of geology. That’s important. You have taught us on our level. In doing so we have become friends. Friends listen to friends. I have recommended your lectures and videos to many of my friends. Others have done the same. So the audience grows. You will be a big part of the success of the North Cascade Research Team as far as participation is concerned. You will bring a built in audience. We all look forward to sharing the experience with you.

I'm 40 minutes in and finally figured out why I enjoy your channel so much, you speak about as fluently as I do scientificess. You are excellent at asking the right questions and translating into English what they mean. You're amazing Nick! I somehow unsubscribed for about a year, but I'm back to catch up on everything I missed! I'm actually feeling a bit inspired, you might be getting an email from me. We'll see how life takes me in the next few months.

Playing with words like Lego pieces: Rhea means "flow", as in rhinorrhea (runny nose) and other bodily "rheas" you might be familiar with. So "rhea" + "ology" is the study of flow. Studying how different magmas and lavas flow sounds awesome.

And here's to you, Dr. Nick. I feel your enthusiasm and it enthuses me. You do wonders for my almost 79 year old mind. It is good to be enthused at 79 (Nov 28th.) It's never too late to learn and we can learn at our speed, going back over sessions as required and no exams.

We got hit hard starting in March 2020 . I really want to" Thank You" for helping me through many difficulty days/nights after work . It was your calm, funny and interesting approach that brought me to a place where I could relax a bit. I watched and rewatched them , and learned a few things. Mostly, it gave me something nice and peaceful to look forward too . Bring on Eocene A . Thanks Again Nick !

I believe your Talking Heads move at 1:26:20, and the line "Same As it Ever Was", (and "Water Flowing Underground"), came from their "Once in a Lifetime" video. Prof. Zentner and all the great geologists whom you are referring to in your lectures: thank you for making me more addict to amateur geology studies than some people are to soap operas and serials :-) Although it"s not easy to follow this very complex material, but it opens my eyes wide to how the knowledge in geology is reformed still in every second of our lives :-) As far as the quality of the broadcast is concerned, here in Europe, Hungary watching it after the live lecture from around the middle of the course the voice and the picture got into delay and quite hard to follow, but not impossible. After all geology as such is so complex that it's really not for all levels of intelligence :-) So, I write 'tumbs' for the supporting technics from the side probably of your internet provider, although I'm doing it with a delay, and I appologize for that :D God bless all geologists and all of us to make it safe during these challenging times

Been interested in geology for decades. Know virtually nothing, and I don't speak "geological research." I've stuck around through Geology 101 and Geology 351 online because there's a nugget every once in a while that gives me some insight. I rarely remember terminology until I've heard it about 100 times, but I taught political and cultural history for decades in a public high school, and, having retired from that, I'm interested in earth's history, as well, I remain hopeful. Oh, and I'm enamored of the Rocky Mountains, and have been for a long time. I've spent a lot of time and energy hiking in them, from New Mexico to Montana, especially in Colorado. Camera #2 cuts off your head, for what it's worth a few hours after the fact.

Had to work today and missed this live. No scrubbing ahead for me as I enjoy the prelude to the lecture as much as the lecture itself. Again, a great way to unwind from the work day.
( adding to my comment as I have watched a bit of the video )
In my opinion, and I’m confident that I am not alone, I feel that the decision to ask you to be the ‘public voice’ of this North Cascades Research team is perfect as you have the dynamic ability ; in the same way that Neil DeGrasse Tyson communicates Astrophysics to the general public, to disseminate the geological understanding and discoveries that we all look forward to learning about when the scientific paper(s) are written.
Along with the familiarity with expressing these concepts in a live: EWU Public Lecture Series and this ‘virtual’ setting here on UA-cam, environment to us the average person, you have grown a community of followers/students of geology that would benefit all of us in one way or another from your addition to the team. Congratulations ! ( I think ….. hahaha )
We all are excited about this experience and look forward, with eager anticipation, to adding to the understanding of our world in the Pacific Northwest and as that translates into the southern part of ,where I grew up , British Columbia.

If you can't admit you don't understand something, you'll never really learn it. The best habit I developed in the last few years is to stop bluffing and overstating my knowledge of whatever someone's asking me about. I wasn't really super-big on it, but letting it go completely and just saying 'I don't know' is so freeing.

I am 2/3 of the way through watching this on my television. I am astonished at how bad both the picture and the sound are. Every time you turn around and move away from the camera the sound dims. I don’t recall ever having problems with this before in your other broadcasts. It’s very distressing because I know you’ve gone to so much effort to try to make it all work properly. But that is how it is. Best of luck Nick!

Another smart decision to stay away from oceanic plate speculation.
My speculation for the Great Pacific Plate shift in the Eocene, is that it was initiated by the accretion of the Yakutat/Siletz Plateau as an obstruction, and naturally corrected its motive direction by reactive motion adjustment seeking the path of least resistance.

Red chalk was very difficult to see
When you walked to the back of the room the volume dipped low like the BT mic was not on 1:07:50
It was more difficult to hear with your back to camera, possibly because the BT mic was off?
Really like that there is plenty of room for multiple chalk boards!
It seems like it is the application melon that is the issue with cameras, not you.
Possible you can physically label the cameras to help keep them strait?

The extension sounds like impact reflection (?). Exotic terrane bounce-back? Even under compression a material will have reflective waves back through an impacting material. I am thinking of a vehicle impact. Relative to an impacting vehicle, during the collision, parts will be moving backwards (reflecting) while the back of the vehicle is still moving into the collision. Collisions are complicated. Timing is important! Maybe an earlier terrane acted as a crumple zone? (stuck in the vehicle analogy).

The top part of your head is cut off when you switch to the 2nd (Mellon camera.) I could see you with both camera views. The green board looks a bit sharper with the new camera.

I recently saw a map from another class that has our Old North American boundary more over at the edge of the Rocky Mountains and not near Boise?

Could the earth be getting bigger as it cools and that's why the crust is extending?

You said thirty years. I left University of Northern Colorado at Greeley 1993, so real close to thirty years. Top of the high peaks of the Rockies are flat- Eocene erosional surfaces...the top of the Rockies.

What are you doing wrong? It seems that the camera lens needs to be adjusted to finer focus. That is it.
