  • The red-breasted parakeet (Psittacula alexandri) is a vibrantly colored parrot native to Southeast Asia. It's known for its distinct red chest patch, earning it the nickname "moustached parakeet" in some regions due to the dark markings on its face.
The red-breasted parakeet is a medium-sized bird, typically reaching about 16 inches (40 cm) in length. They are primarily green with a bright red patch on their breast and a gray-blue head. Males have a red upper bill, while females have a black bill.
There are eight recognized subspecies of red-breasted parakeet, with most being confined to small islands in Indonesia. One subspecies is found in the Andaman Islands, and another is spread across mainland Southeast Asia, extending to the foothills of the Himalayas in northeastern South Asia.
These parakeets are social birds and are often seen in flocks flying over forests, parks, and gardens. They are known for their loud, high-pitched calls.
The red-breasted parakeet is currently listed as "Near Threatened" by the IUCN due to a decline in its population. This decline is likely due to habitat loss and the illegal pet trade.
