A very sad, unfortunate travesty, preventable had this agency adopted a rule that many other municipalities already have for exactly this situation. ALWAYS approach the passenger side of the car. If, hopefully not, this occurs again, the administrators have FIRST themselves to blame if they fail to change their rules.
Who of us as a private citizen would be foolish enough to stand next to the white line on a highway? Only a fool. You’d probably be ticketed!
Part of the problem is pure arrogance. Wearing a uniform doesn’t protect the human body against a vehicle driving at highway speeds. Stupid 🙄

This is a tragedy beyond belief. But it begs the question, was a traffic stop really warranted for a seat belt violation? There is now a young family without a husband, father and likely, son. Fellow troopers, please keep this in mind when performing a stop such as this. It_is_NOT_worth_it !

So sorry to hear this. My dad's brother, a Louisiana State Trooper, was killed on a similar type stop by a log truck that encroached 9nt9 the shoulder.
his wife couldnt receive his pension bcz the state said , though he was vested, he didnt have the age, 55 or 20 years of service to qualify for his pension to be paid out to his wife = how rotten can you be to a man's family who gave his life on the job? he sacrifices his life and then the state rob's his family. when will this bs change? damn shame

This is why I would never pull over on the highway shoulder but what if you are like that air force veteran that gets held at gunpoint for taking the freeway exit to avoid this from happening. Cops created this problem and their admins perpetuate instances like this to continue.

Dead over a seat belt....First thing you learn in the Academy, Never communicate while in the right of way, and Never turn your back to oncoming traffic. This death could have been very easily avoided.
