  • Thousands of tonnes of used clothing gets thrown out every year in Metro Vancouver, and much of what is re-purposed is sent abroad. Some people in the recycling and textiles industries say Canada still lacks a lot of the infrastructure to properly re-purpose clothes - and that there is still too much reliance on other countries to break down our garments for us.

This entire CBC piece is showcasing how Vancouver has a long way to go in this regard. This is the perfect example of how immensely distributed our global supply chains are, which isn't limited to the fashion industry. For startups, small and medium brands that want to do more sustainable sourcing like using recycled natural materials for their clothing, have to rely on extremely extended supply chains, as we lack textile recycling infrastructure in Western Canada (though we and many others are working on that!). And, it's a systemic issue, beyond the ability of any one brand to fix. A few shops around the cities of Canada that "buys" these old clothes for recycling might help encourage the Canadians to "sell" thier old stuff. It's about making new jeans 👖, 🧥 jackets and T-shirts from these wastes....and I'd buy them especially if they're made into classic "uniform like" designs... Great for gifts.

I'm here because I started wondering about throwing away my holey socks and t-shirts. Also remembering that before the mid-1800s or so, textiles were recycled into paper--good paper. I'm so glad to see that people are actually recycling textiles. This is exciting. :)
