  • Triple square sockets are a must when working on German cars. If you don't have a good triple square, you will not be able to fix a lot of car issues. The VIM set is one of the best 3/8 small triple square sets I have found.

Great example of how a good tool review should be done. Top quality visuals, best sound quality and absolutely no bullshit. Best on UA-cam!

I JUST bought this game set 4 weeks ago to do the rear-brakes on my Golf R (video on my profile). I borrowed one a while back to remove my Steering Wheel so already these are very useful to have. Should have bought them a long time ago.

I've owned this exact set for the past couple years. Works great on Axle Bolts where it bolts up to the transmission that is just one of my VW's especially the Manual 2000 VW Passat 1.8t..... Good Review Keep up the good work...

VIM makes really nice tools for the money. I have two sets of those shorty triple square bit sockets and they get used quite often. VIM also has a really nice set of half cut torx bit sockets in 1/4" drive that are great for working on euro stuff. Cornwell also makes a set of long one piece triple square bit sockets that are really handy.

I was going through a bunch of loose sockets at a local pawn shop and found 6 of the 8 sizes from this set, plus a 6mm allen socket, for $5. I like 'em. Now I just need a late model VW to use them on. 😊

I've been borrowing my boss' set of these for a long time. they're great. they bite better than my long shank set of cornwell on shallower bolts because the cornwel has a bevel on the edge.
we hit these with an impact fairly regularly and haven't broken them.
everyone quick, go buy some before the price jumps

Never heard of a triple square until doing a brake job on my son's MK5 GTI. When I saw the bolt I had no clue wth it was...lol. Looked online to see then had to call local parts store to see if they had a set. I think I got a set from Autozone. I think the set was just under $20. This was the 1st German/Euro car I ever worked on.

Matco basically rebrands theses for themselves.
IMO, the best triple squares (XZN) come from Ko-ken (Koken) of Japan. I have a set going up to a 100mm M18. Koken makes a lot of OEM tools for Audi/VW and tons of specialized sockets. The set cost me about 90 Euros in 1/2 drive. For smaller stuff, I use Gedore bits on socket adapters.

Ugh, triplesquare. You know what Rust Belt mechanics call triplesquare bolts?
    Round.
Because all the teeth have rusted out, making it almost impossible to do a brake job on certain VW models.

Solid, pro grade tools; many vim tools, were sold under the Bluepoint line, from Snapon. I have not broken any yet. I had never heard of "S2" steel; until, I looked at VIM tools, it seems to to hold up to use and abuse. I would like to see you review; more VIM tool products! Thanks! :)

I sacrifice these all the time because of their price. I'd also like to add that I believe these are cut a bit sharper then the snap on
equivalent that I have. I don't know why but they seem to fit better in B8 A4/A5 wheel bearings. Again, I don't know why, it just seems to be the case after years of doing wheel bearing on them.

I’m replacing the rear hub on a 2007 Volkswagen Jetta so I bought a set thinking it will come with the sizes I need. Nope. I absolutely cannot find a set that comes with m17 so I am currently waiting on one that is coming from England. 24$ for the set 13$ for the single an I bought a rear hub on eBay for 23$ 🤔🧐🤦🏼‍♂️ so I’m going to save hundreds of dollars or waste 23$ and 45min. I’m not sure how the Chinese hub is gonna work out lol. Well see. Great review, keep em comin.

I just bought a Triple Square key set by mistake. I had never heard of this designation, so I thought that it might be another name for Roberson or Square wrenches. I was wrong. The tips look more like Torx to me. Anyway, they're of good quality, and I'll keep them IF they can be used with Torx screws. How about it, are the Torx and Triple Square sizes compatible?

Nice video! Today i had to chage rear bearings(on 1K Golf) as ABS ring on it was swelled from rust so much that it had a contact to speed sensor, on both sides...
Damn those on rear end are sometimes tight 180Nm + 180 decrees on that bolt is over kill but hay they dont come lose easy :D
Little fire on it and "Elephant gun" did get them out eventually ;)

They probably have a better bite strength than hex. When you strip them you can use internal extractors

More teeth means more twisting torque. For a 10mm cheese head fastener which has to take 70Nm you can't reasonably get that much torque into it with hex. I am using the cheapo adapters from O'Reilly's, which was all I needed for my A8. That covered both half shafts and heads.

Possibly just the VW autogroup uses XZN. At Beemer, I never had to buy a set of XZN and neither has my friend that works at Merc. We work with hex, hex bit, e-torx, torx bit, 6 point tamperproof torx, 5 point tamperproof. The tamperproof stuff is used on odd bits when you usually don't remove like cam adjusters and MAF sensors. Him at Merc draws the short string and constantly breaking and twisting torx bits (even their brake caliper slide pins use it). Wheres all our brakes use 6, 7, 8, 9 mm hex bit, T50 for some Mini rotor screws. E18, 16mm and 18mm for some anchor bolts.

Bmw and Mercedes do use triple squares as well as any VAG product(Audi, skoda, seat, porches ect).I don't have my snap on set in font of me,but the package list some of the common applications, include bmw and Mercedes uses.

Bmw applications seem to be limited to m9 triple square on the e brake cable on late models
Mercedes applications include m8 xzn for some head and accessory bolts. M10 for head bolt and driveshaft bolts. M12 for head bolts.

swisherboi Maybe on E70 electric park brake control unit, but you never take it apart and the bolts on the chassis is torx varient. If its the cylinder head, dealer will use special tools. Using a cheapie will more or less round off on high torque fasteners.

i've never came across these fasteners on Citroen, Peugeot or Renault. Must just be VW that implement them in their vehicles and all the other ones in the VW family. Don't know about Saab or volvo, dont work on them all that often.
