  • A customer reached out and wanted to restore his grandfather’s West Germany Wiebelhaus & Company axe. It turned out amazing. Sapele handle and wenge pale swell. What more could you ask for?

    Linseed oil on soap dispenser. U r so welcome.
    Thanks for doing the general shaping with a rasp and file. Slow and steady, controlled. (Plus I don’t have power tools so it’s nice for someone else to do it like I do lol)

    Sapele is not an ideal percussion wood for a hard-working axe...but for a tool you'll press into service for small tasks like splitting kindling for a fireplace, it's perfect and beautiful. And *thank you* for not banging in steel wedges; they are used by folks that cannot properly fit a wood wedge when hanging an axe. Steel wedges split the wood and allow moisture in.

      I believe the customer is using it as a wall piece.

    Nice job. For a show axe to hang on the wall the sapele is fine, but I'm sceptical of it's ability to flex if it was put into service. Ash and hickory are used for that reason. When you said it was chipping out from the rasp I thought Oh, Oh!. Something else to consider when making a home made handle is that the end grain should be running in the same direction as the blade. Face grain on the sides.

    Quite a curve. I wonder if it functions as good as it looks

      Sapele is 1500 on the Janka hardness scale. Thats harder than ash, white oak and Maple. It should function great.

      @@HollerCompany The hardness scale doesn't take into account brittleness vs toughness does it?

    • @HollerCompany
      @HollerCompany  2 місяці тому +1

      The Janka hardness scale measures how well wood can withstand dents, dings, and wear. With that said, I’m not quite sure. Haha It became a show piece for the customer. The customer really wasn’t concerned about heavy use, by the end.

    making a camp axe would require a forge, you made a camp axe handle?????

    • @HollerCompany
      @HollerCompany  Місяць тому +1

      I mean if we want to split hairs; A handle alone doesn’t make an axe. And an axe head alone doesn’t make an axe… but putting them together makes the axe. So, In my case I also made the handle to go with the axe head.
