Personally I feel like trident would make a great range weapon. I mean, for bow you can't stack mending and infinity, but a trident can have loyalty AND mending, also if you add channeling and unbreaking...

i agree tbh, not only its more versatile with it working underwater so in PVP ya can just jump in, get some range and pretty much destroy enemy player that use bows, you can also bring a extra riptide trident to quickly escape the Close quarter advantage any sword has if ya just bring a bucket of water

A god bow is almost just as powerful as a god sword minus the looting, but I always keep both on hand
They should add the ability to "sacrifice a few nautilus shells into an active conduit set up to summon rain, thus allowing 2 of the trident's enchants to be more viable, and allowing more world control in the mid to late game, depending on when you get a heart of the sea.

If the Trident has the Loyalty enchantment, it costs nothing to repeatedly throw. A bow consumes arrows as ammo. That, and you can use it in melee without switching weapons. Add that to the other enchantments, and it's much more cost effective.

And the trident gets outclassed by a weapon with sharpness, and has a slower fire speed than a bow , and does less damage than an upgraded bow. The only reason to use a trident for combat late game is If You want to save space
I prefer the trident since getting a trident is just too easy. If you build your base on top of a river, you can expect getting 2 fully repaired tridents in just 2 days. Although the trident is less useful than the sword, I don’t have to fear loosing it as much.
loyalty is a thing and its not hard to get (either from books or just from the trident on the enchanting table)
What I meant by loosing it is that if I die, it won’t as awful to loose my trident compared to my Diamond Sword. The only thing I enchant my trident with is Loyalty, Unbreaking, and mending. I enchant my sword with all the useful enchantments that take me a while to get. I can much easier replace my trident if I die.

Are you playing on Bedrock or Java? Because tridents are super rare and hard to get on the Java version, the drop rates are very low.

Apparently the impaling enchantment was fix, it now deals 2x damage to mobs/players that are submerged or in water or outside on a rainy day.

Its just a personal preference. But it depends on the situation you are in. Surely, i wouldnt mind using a trident but its difficult to get a full durability trident.

Bow vs Crossbow during the 1.14 update that’d be a great video
For that, the bow has better dpm, since you can fire the bow before it is fully charged, and even then it charges faster than the crossbow, so in a 1v1 the bow would win. However, if you preload a bunch of crossbows, which while eating up more slots than a bow would, is going to do more burst damage and win out. Personally, I’d go with the bow for its versatility, but the crossbow is pretty cool too, with it’s farther range and damagw

Imagine having loyalty, channeling and riptide on a trident in your left hand. Then having a fully enchanted diamond sword on your right hand. You’re basically Endgame Thor with the ability to summon lightning when raining and calling upon your weapon.
I use Sword and Trident, you can use them for multiple situations for maximum affect on mobs.
2:25 This only applies on Java though. On Bedrock edition, there is no attack cooldown whatsoever.
4:58 On Bedrock edition, the damage bonus applies to all mobs that are in contact with water (including rain) as well.
9:09 Again, this does not apply on Bedrock, because on Bedrock, impaling damages all mobs that are underwater.

There is attack cooldown on bedrock, but it is the same for all weapons. You cannot deal damage while your enemy is red.

If I had to decide I think the trident and diamond sword are equal. Yes tridents Can be thrown but diamond swords can have sharpness. A diamond sword with any type of sharpness except for level one sharpness is stronger than the trident. also a diamond sword with sharpness 1 is the same damage as a trident. Another downside to tridents are that tridents have lower durability than diamond swords and have a longer cooldown for each swing. Well that's my thoughts anyway.
Edit: Also swing speed isn't a problem on console soooo yeah
And impaling also works good against drowneds in console.
The trident is pretty freaking cool, but without loyalty it’s hard to use. The diamond sword has more enchantments for different roles, like smite and bane of arthropods.
When I enchanted my trident to impaling, it killed a drowned in one hit.
I like the trident with loyalty 🤙🏾
You can put fire aspect 2 sharpness 5 and many other enchantments on a trident now using the anvil and after having mending put you do not need to consider durability making the Trident a total winner but its way lot harder to find than diamonds so for the starting a diamond sword would be a good choice
