Man I enjoyed seeing these segments again. I ate up every one that paired Toad Smith with Stange. They really seemed to have a great friendship. Oreo's and chicken by a fire!
When Doug was yelling “Toad…….TOAD!!!!!!!!!” and Toad was nowhere to be found, I always imagine Toad was off in the woods getting rid of some of that chicken, and was running back to the water as fast as he could trying to get his britches back up.
I love Toad ! Besides being a world class Cat Man he is from Iowa ! Unfortunately he had developed a heart condition just as he was becoming world famous. Only man I know too catch a catfish on a piece of his own heart ! And he lived as a true Iowa sportsman ! And died retrieving wild game from a ditch he had shot , wading into snow drift ! I can only hope to go that same way ! I love Iowa ! Where else can you catch flatheads into the 80 pound range walleyes into the teens huge Musky ! 7-8 pound bass 1 pound sunfish and bluegills 20 pound channels 2-3 pound crappie ! Northern pike in the world class range. I have personally seen a 40 pound plus pike caught photographed and returned to the Des Moines river . Mega trout streams. In the Missouri giant blue cat fish well over 100 pounds. Not too forget our carp gar and sheep’s head aka fresh water drum smallies into the 6-7 pounders whitebass wiper hybrid into the 20 pound range fresh water eels sand sturgeon and a plethora of rough fish. Spoonbills are still found below the dams that lead to the great rivers. We have by far one of the best fisheries in the United States ! And places like table rock and all of Minnesota and Wisconsin a short drive away.
@@44_83 he had heart surgery and they removed a piece and he went fishing with it ! He died wading into deep snow retrieving a rooster pheasant he harvested road hunting .
@@stevedingman474 Just googled it because it sounded unreal, but I don't know what to think now that I know. I remember this man Toad from an old in fisherman magazine. He doesn't look like that Toad in that he looked like an older mountain man who was living in the woods. R.I.P.

He didn’t try very hard to get the hook out did he Should have taken some pliers with them to get the hooks out instead of leaving it in the fishes mouth
The Big Sioux River to be exact! I e-mail Doug a very long time ago and he shared he and Otis use to fish on the Big Sioux around and north of Hawarden, IA. Otis is buried up on a hill over looking that river. The state record for flatheads was taken at a low head dam by Hawarden. Caught from the bank and weighed 90 lbs. guy thought he had a snag until it moved off the bottom.
This has been confirmed as being taped on the Minnesota River in one of the magazine issues, can't remember which exactly. It's a wonderful and largely untapped fishery for catfish. Probably just got the sunnies at a bait shop

did you really just cut the hook off???why did you not pull it out lol it was right there could have popped it out with your palm
Different era
rob kerz different era? I'm pretty sure they had pliers in 1990. Just stupidity!
looks like you have learned to pack a big pair of pliars.
Ok we got flatheads , fried chicken, a big fire now all we need is the pickled weiners, , and peppers, and some cold cheap beer ,,,,, I’m in.
pretty good chicken a? I Love it!!! I've read all about Otis ''Toad'' Smith in the book Chanel Catfish I think it is?
Is that Doug Stange or Garth Algar?
That is Doug with Otis TOAD smith!
He didn’t try very hard to get the hook out did he Should have taken some pliers with them to get the hooks out instead of leaving it in the fishes mouth
NEBRASKA RIVERS!
Pretty certain most of this was in Iowa.
The Big Sioux River to be exact! I e-mail Doug a very long time ago and he shared he and Otis use to fish on the Big Sioux around and north of Hawarden, IA. Looks like The Mn River but they are suing bluegills so its must not be. lol
This has been confirmed as being taped on the Minnesota River in one of the magazine issues, can't remember which exactly. It's a wonderful and largely untapped fishery for catfish. Probably just got the sunnies at a bait shop
Been fishing the Mn river for years and sunfish are not legal to sell or use as bait in Minnesota.
amusingtheamazing well 1990 must have been different or they were breaking the law on camera
Breaking the law then because gamefish have NEVER been legal to use for bait in MN.
this was on the little Sioux river in nw ia. not minn. they wrote about this section of river in a couple articles. I know exactly where this was.
Smh Why they didn't take the hook out it was a easy removal the must don't know how long it takes a hook to rust out
kfc lol
