Sugar Ray fought Hearns a little over 2 months later in there first bout, Hearns fought Baez on the undercard.Sugar Ray fought Benitez, Duran twice, Kalule and Hearns all in a 21 month span???? What other fighter in history could boast such a resume, with the possible exception of Muhammad Ali in the 70's AMAZING!!
I mentioned once on another video how Leonard already had a HOF resume by his first retirement. idk if it'll happen again in such a short amount of time w/ the amount of boxing politics that goes on today (and considering how champions rarely fight more than 2x a year nowadays).
Undeniable facts.
Sugar Ray Robinson. Loss to Jake Lamotta the first fight, then fought 2 fighters before the rematch in a 1 month span.
@@xGhostRidahfighters were diff then
@@christusomnipotens3751 Fighters weren't different. The boxing business was different. In order to make a living, you needed to stay busy and it didn't matter whether you were a champion or not. Many of the champions were making purchases in expectations of a match in the NEAR future. Thanks to the broader boxing base from people like some of the old timers and certainly the Ali's and others, boxing has moved into a comfortable position of being able to pay boxers bigger purses. That also draws more people into the sport to participate as combatants and viewers. Capitalism at its most basic level
I could watch Sugar fights all the time!
I just today learned that my old man and Sugar Ray Leonard share a birthday. Sugar is 3 years older than my pops. it's also ironic because I was just watching that Mike Tyson video earlier where he was crying telling SRL how much he meant to him and how beautiful he was. then I watched the Sugar Ray and Wilfredo Benitez fight! then 5 minutes ago this video gets uploaded. been an awesome day.
What a fight that was. Two of my all time favorites and the best staredown in boxing history
0.
Its been a Sugar Ray Day for you.
Somebody up there obviously wants you to better yourself so has blessed you with the knowledge of Ray Leonards levels of excellence n what it took to get him there.
@@SPIDERM0OSE he's my least favorite of the Four Kings but he's still one of the best boxers ever
Ppppppppppppppppppppp
Some people forget ray moved up in weight (154, Jr. Middleweight, wba) won and then moved back down to welterweight (147) to fight and defeat hearns
I remember this fight, Hearns fought on the Undercard against Baez. I was 12 years old
The greatest of all times Sugar Ray Leonard
Undefeated Southpaw Champion in a higher weight class as a TUNE UP. SRL earned his status.
Ray Leonard before the retina tear is the greatest fighter in history. He mastered every facet of boxing. He would have beaten Robinson in both of their prime.
Nah. You can say that about any of the top fighters in their primes- RJJ, FMW, Duran, SRR. In their primes, they were the best.
SRL fought too long, coming back when he no longer could compete. And surprisingly, did not last as well as the other guys, when fighting beyond 35 years of age
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I disagree with yours. Robinson went 85-0 as an amateur and in his prime 128-1-2 as a pro. His only loss in this period was to someone who outweighed him by 16 pounds (as La Motta did). It's an easy thing to say 'would have beaten', but I think Leonard would have found it a lot lot more difficult in the ring with Robinson than it is to say it if they'd met in the ring in their primes.
So great that he even admitted that he didn’t want to fight Duran at Durans best
@@xxlionroarxxxxxxxx4438fr i don’t know why tho... he made brawling with duran a close fight and if he had boxed and brawled he could’ve won against duran in that first fight
Leonard was in peak condition. He KO’d a strong champion that hadn’t even been knocked down before. One of my favourite Leonard fights 🥊
Excellent expert analysis by the Great Marvelous Marvin Hagler. Rip Champ
He's the man we really love.
Yes, he was spot on in his reading of the fight. Marvin was the most complete boxer I ever saw he actually was marvellous.
I'm still thrilled to see these Classics, back then we had great champions like Sugar Ray and Kalule. Two great legends!
The most complete fighter of all times..you do gonna see another Sugar Ray Leonard again never he had it all
Sugar Ray was a physical genius. Similar to Achilles or McEnroe or Fedder or Ali or Duran or Baryshnikov . Genius in any form is always exhilarating and seemingly supernatural but Harlod Bloom wrote that it actually preternatural.
Marvin Hagler was such a class act. Best middleweight I ever saw and fun to listen to him here as a commentator. Just an incredible personality, athlete and champion. I miss this guy…the world was a better place when he was in it.
Hagler repeated several times in the first round that SRL "looks a little slow today. He really looks slow..." Strange comment since SRL is loading up whenever he can and probably feels this is all the speed he needs to connect with Kalule. Hagler however does explains over and over that Kalule is waiting for SRL to get in close so he can counter him, which is why having a boxer as analyst is so important. In this way, we learn what's going instead of the announcer droning on that Kaule not doing anything, there's no pattern to his... I wish boxers, could just say, "shut-up and watch the fight!"
He was calling Kalule slow, not Leonard. Listen again
As per the above comment, he clearly was talking about Kalule.
Yes, he was obviously talking about Kalule. I’m not sure how you made that mistake

Greatest Boxer of All Time!
That my friend would be the real Suger Ray !!! Suger Ray Robinson who fought 175 fights !!!
@@richardalexander4300 He could not beat SRL.
@@lime455 Don't kid yourself !!! He had a 125 fights with No LOSSES at one point. That was in several divisions. He also beat the great Jake Lomatta, and many, many others !!!
@@richardalexander4300 He suffered his first loss after 40 fights. Actually, it was Jake LaMotta that was the only man to beat Robinson while he was in his prime. Then, Sugar Ray had a string of 100 or so wins before he started losing again
Big srl fan..greatest I ever saw live...but I won't do what gayweather and his fans do...disrespect great fighters that came before
Leonard was great ,but only had 40 total fights. Robinson had many more. Longevity makes the fighter!!!
Yeah but Robinson fought more cans than a soup kitchen has. Plus he had severe brain damage and died when he was 60 whereas Ray is 66 and still looks fresh as a daisy. Longevity in Boxing is asking for a bad ending.
Leonard punches after the bell in every single damn fight.
Esos si eran grandes combates.
Good fight. Bad stoppage
Was a Great combat .
I love Sugar Ray Leonard, but they had 11 inch fists? How? Where did they measure fists from? Crazy.
haha, so true
They measure the circumference of index, middle, ring and pinky fingers at the base of the fingers where they meet the palm.
HBD ray leonard!
Happy Birthday, legend Sugar Ray
The best of the best . He was almost perfect.
Its always intresting to review fighter's fight record before clashing.
RAY WAS A LITTLE MONSTER IN HIS YOUTH 🔥
Happy birthday
My father went to this fight at the Astrodome. We still have a signed hat by SRL. I see SRL in Devin Haney
Ive had that notion about Haney myself but cant put my finger on it.
Leonard was a jungle cat compared to Haney & everyone in his era who are puddy cats compared to him, but theres something there & I do like Haney, hes made progressive step ups to get where he is, paid some big dues n hes been tested to a degree.
Hayney is still a kid & his self belief is still growing n if Leonard had anything it was courage, self belief & determination, maybe thats what I see in Haney.
Now Unified Undisputed
@@DonutsOverdose
Keep yer knickers on, Petal.
Yer talking there like he went out there over the course of a few years n beat 4 or more undefeated champions n collected all the belts, which he most certainly didnt do.
He went out there with a title that he won via email n fought a man who beat a man who done no more than get a draw vs a guy who actually did go out there n beat multiple champs.
By rights Kambosos should have only put his least valuable belt (Ring Magazine) on the line vs Haney in what turned out to be a timid, technical glorified sparring session.
1 title v 1 title = Fair (Sport)
1 title vs 6 titles (Ring, Lineal, WBA/C/O IBF) = Farce
Haney had done nothing in his career to be in a position to challenge for the 6 portions of a recognised undisputed title, just like Kambosos nor Lopez had.
Its politics n musical chairs.

@@SPIDERM0OSE so who beats him at 135?
@@DonutsOverdose
Depends how long he stays there & who he fights n when.
😏
Here for Ayub kalule ,a Ugandan man though he was against the champ.
Floyd no pegaba no Era completo Como Sugar Ray Leonard
Hbd Leonard
🐐
*Speed is Key, am I right?*
Its a major ingredient.
Timing, more so, but speed always helps. When that goes, you only have technical ability to rely on. Look at Roy Jones against James Toney and then look at him versus Calzaghe. Prime example
@@brandonlamb9067
Toney never fought Calzaghe.
@@SPIDERM0OSE I meant Roy, ha :D
@@brandonlamb9067
Roy was 24 & fought Toney in his 3rd world title fight, he was 39 & in his 27th world title fight when he fought Calzaghe.
You expect any man, in the history of mankind to put himself through the career Roy Jones had in those 15 years to be quicker than he was when he started ?
Yer an idiot.
i was like geeze a srl fight hot dam

Round 5
As a Dane i remember that fight. And the reason why it was stopped were a communication problem . Kalkule thought he asked if he was to hurt and said no. I'm not saying Ray wasn't winning but I think it could have gone the distance or sugar might have stoppet him for Real.
What really made Ray great was his chin. He got hit by the best.
The p4p #1 in the modern era. (1980 - today)
THEE fighter that ALL other fighters are judged by, Sugar Ray Leonard.
Floyd #1

Dry yer eyes n go read a romance novel about soft n gentle Floyd.
Imo, RJJ was equal to Leonard, he had fast hands, agility and accuracy. Also, ko power.
Sugar Ray Leonard inrepetible nunca mas Habra algo semejante
He switched a vulnerable to leanords right
Maywether please are u crazy???
Y does his gloves look like that?
If you want to study boxing watch sugar ray Leonard
Yup exactly Im watching him to study rn
Totalmente de acuerdo.
If you see some mistake of Sugar Ray Leonard let me know.. because he was the perfect boxer
This is way before my era so I don't really have context for this fight, but can anyone tell me why Sugar Ray chose to brawl with this guy? He's usually more measured in his fights. Just curious.
He knew he could knock him out, he wasn't boxing in this fight. He was loading up frequently, Kalue had no power to keep him off. I was 12 when this took place
Sugar Ray Leonard had a lot of dog in him. He would have liked to have been seen as a boxer-brawler that could stand in front of his opponent and slip punches while dismantling them. That's the reason he went toe-to-toe with Duran. Yet he didn't realize that this was a Cat who had the same vision of himself, as Leonard had of himself
Pound. By. Pound. Leonard. Was the. Best. On. The world 🌍💓🪘🌍

Ray Leonard before the retina tear is the greatest fighter in history. He mastered every facet of boxing. He would have beaten Robinson in both of their prime.
No way, Leonard proved iver his whole career he is not at Robinsons level.
He is a beast, but outsmarted by Duran and the original cherry picker.
Lamotta beat robinson as well using similar infighting tactics ...but only once in their multiple fights...Duran was a great lightweight but vs the four kings he has a losing record
@@vagalN Leonard embarrassed Duran in No Mas. No Robinson performance ever comes close to that. Duran is the second greatest fighter ever and Leonard made him look like an amateur. I said Leonard before retina tear. After the retina tear he took a four year lay off and was just a shell of himself.
@borood1188 he was a shell of himself because if all that cocaine.
And he forced Duran into an immdeiatte rematch but never gave Tommy that opportunity- Hearns was only 23 when they first fought.
SRL was a good fighter but for some reason no one ever puts him forward to be the best ever.
He was also a big welterweight- finishing his career as a lightheavy. And still didn"t give Hagler the fight when it was being clamored for.
Fast hands, strong, mobile good chin and can fight. He's a great fighter but Duran still beat him in his absolute prime. I don't think his technique was that great compared to some. When his physical advantages faded- he didn't have the technique to keep up even with Camacho...
@borood1188 ans SRR the original Sugar is said to be the best because of wood of mouth by everyone who saw him. He's like the Jordan of basketball. Gifted.
