- John Lydon talks about Jimmy Savile and his 'seediness' during an interview recorded for BBC radio in late 1978, this excerpt was not broadcast but has just been made available as part of the reissue of the first PIL album. Interviewer: Vivienne Goldman.
My old Dad always said that something wasn't right about Jimmy Saville. He was right!..............
+David Mcque My mum too..... was a big Christmas Day row when she said [1971] that savile was really unpleasant, and something really revolting about him, and her family slapping her down, saying ''but he is a lovely man! does so much for charity and road safety''....she was right.
+David Mcque He was widely known as a "dirty old man" who "liked em young" in Leeds. I don't think anyone realised quite how young though.
Everyone knew because the rumors started in the 60's
+David Mcque my old mum said the same, some 'creepy' about him. She has good instincts.
My aunt did too
Say what you like about John Lydon, 99% of the time what comes out of his angry bitter mouth is honesty. A rare thing in these times.
@David Smith I think his account name and pic is taking the piss out of them to be fair. If I'm wrong then yeah, get fucked you commie useful idiot.
lydon is a pretentious hypocrite.
very true
The guy was a much hated figure in '1977 onwards'in the music scene by that bunch of bad people because he was not scared to expose them. Then on the Piers Morgan show he gets a standing ovation (30 years later)because his speech gets aired.........I think the guy is a genius, but as i said in 1977 no,one would listen to him
Well if we all went round telling the truth and being honest all the time the World would be in a right state.
"Jimmy Saville....I think he's a hypocrite. I imagine he's into all kinds of seediness, that we all *know* about, but not *allowed* to talk about. I know some rumours..."
"I bet none of this will be allowed out"
Huh.
Why oh why hadnt you got the guts to come out and say it john?
even the cops knew and were investigating a lot of high powered people in government and the BBC, apparently MI6 came along and shut them down. basically told to stop investigating or else.
So if the cops knew and could say nothing a guy like Johnny had no hope.

Funny at the time how most people loved Saville but hated Lydon. Guess that says a lot about people.
reversal of fortune.
Saville was really close to the royals, perhaps that's something else that should be looked into.
@Bob Cook Yeah 'cause there ain't any paedophiles in the Republican party.
If you're still looking at this as having anything to do with 'left and right', then they'll always win.
@Kurt Cobain Duh, he's John Lydon!
I hated Saville couldn't stand him as a kid, he looked creepy and I was proved right. I love Johnny Rotten, straight talking no nonsense, says it as it is he don't give a damn what people think. He tried to expose a pervert but got silenced. Shame on the BBC. John lydon is a very clever man with morals better than all the ones who knew and covered it up x
Johnny rotten should be recognized as one of England's greatest living national treasures. Saviles remains belong in the sewer.
I agree, Mr Lydon's services to the British dairy industry are unparalleled. Without him I would still be putting margarine on my crumpets, however knowing that a forthright, outspoken and principled man such as John Lydon would never kowtow to market pressures and become a capitalist shill, we can all rest, safe in the knowledge that the sales of churned bovine breastmilk are so important that a former punk legend really should abandon all of the values he so loudly professed to hold dear in order to make sure we're all buying more fucking butter.
Obviously, as per this video, he plans that there would only be "about five" people left to buy that butter, and there's only so much butter a person can eat so it's not like he's after the money or anything.
Lydon's a fake punk and a twat and his band was shite

@@donkmeister agreed. Hating a pedo doesnt make you great, that should just be par for the course. Didnt mention specifics either, if he knew that much then he should have said alot more and gone into detail. Dont know why everyone praises him, if he knew that much he is complicit in my eyes. Especially with the platform he had, he knew all he did and chose to barely reveal anything. Aside from that, hes a manufactured punk with a bitterness towards any musician better than himself.
I was a kid in the 1970s, and I got told off by my mum's carshare friend for saying I thought Jimmy Savile was creepy. He was seen as a saint back then because of all his charity work with sick children, ironically enough.

We need more of John Lydon out here in the world (or ones that need to raise their voices)
S'not that folks are too spooked to speak up, but with no platform their voices are just ridiculed /pushed aside or oppressed into silence through not being listened to.
I really like John Lydon, may sound really bolshy but he is damn honest and is not afraid to speak his mind where there is injustice.
John is a good man ' who attempted to expose the dark side of the so called respected do gooders ' ex Beatle John Lennon had the same intentions with exposing crooked politics eg ' which is why I believe he was assinated.
My nan said there was something dodgy about Jimmy Saville. She was very right... this was in 1970.
And now the Daily Mail is calling the prosecution of celebrities a 'witch hunt' as if no celebs have ever abused anyone. No wonder Savile got away with it for 50 years when half the sheeple think all sex abuse accusers are liars.
The UK daily mail is a mainstream paper for average intellingence "middle" class readers. the "sun" for example in a uk paper aimed at people of below average intelligence but who often have lofty asperations of "success"..and vote tory or conservative. the "daily mirror" is aimed at people a bit more intelligent in my opinion, like below average to average but who are also working class like the sun readers but who appear to be less ruthless and not so "success and to hell with who get sin my way" attitude. they are usually labour voters. both of the gutter press press papers I have just mentioned are very selective in their storylines, in my opinion both papers are not much more that political propaganda brainwashing tools. lastly, there are papers like the independent, the guardian, for example. read by intellingent and above intelligent people who are also a varied lot, ranging from treehugger save the dolphin and the world types to doctors, lawyers, etc. I am not sure of the political differences in leanings, they are there for sure but harder for me to identify yet!. golden rule in you're town seems to be don't catch the bus!
Dank Scooby Doo ... Fuck BBC, and all their lies, they feed us nothing but...
It's even worse today. If a woman says she has been raped she is put on trail not the man who raped her.
God save John Lydon! Had this been broadcast at the time, our honest John would have been (even further) vilified. But he was one hundred % right! Savile was the devil, and Rotten was the hero.
Sid should have applied that bike chain to Saville's face and gone all Clockwork Orange on him. Unchanneled angst is useless:(
John Lydon, Jerry Sadowitz - the only two people with enough morality and bravery to try and expose Jimmy Savile before his death.
The only two people in showbiz I mean. The rumours were whispered around schoolyards so were widely known by us plebs, but what can we do?
David Icke called it a while before he died.
You mean aside from his victims who actually came forward and were ignored.
@Bacchus Leto Apparently it happened on shoot as well
Bill Oddy had plenty to say too, others as well. The situation was a lot more complicated than you appear to think.
John Lydon was clearly years ahead of his time, what a cool dude.
I was in Jersey a few months ago, and in a Chinese restaurant a handful of people over 70, all speaking in crisp RP accents, were sat around a table. My family and I tried to listen without being noticed, once we heard one say something about John Cleese being the most obnoxious man they'd ever had to work with... and then they mentioned Jimmy Saville... "of course, a lot was said at the time" a man said, before a woman hushed him up and warned him that people might hear...
A lot was known. The MPs were at it too. There was, and still is, a class of untouchable people who are above the law in this country: an establishment drenched in worse secrets than this, no doubt. And this is sickening.
Kelly B Can you please elaborate. I'm in the U.S. and don't really understand whats going on with the priveleged there. Who are the RP's and MP's...are those government people. Are there still House of Lords members who are there by birthright?
Slap Stick l o l
Slap Stick RP accent is Received Pronunciation (Look up BBC English for a definition) and MP is a Member of Parliament. The House of Lords has a mixture of people who have inherited the title from family and some who have had the title bestowed on them
Hoffinator I see. The RP would be the equivalent of the American "Thurston Howell III" accent. Interesting. Thanks.
Slap Stick RP is only spoken by about 3% of the UK population. It is the accent of the elite.
If the journalist didn't know the rumours too, she'd have asked JL what on earth he was on about, because it's such an extraordinarily confident and salacious claim about the most prominent media personality of that period. Especially as she states the interview will be edited / libellous comments rescinded. It's clear she , like others, knew and wasn't willing to discuss it. Probably because Savile was feared.
Never really taken Lydon seriously before now, but now I'd buy him a beer.
We never heard of Jimmy Savile here, in the States. But I’ve heard of Johnny Rotten all my life and I’ve admired and adored him from the get go! ♥️

Same here in Australia - except we had Rolf Harris instead of Saville
@@Colleens-CornerRolf Harris was a pal of Savilles, l was stunned when Rolf was charged with those pedo crimes. Like Saville, he simply used the huge power of his fame and popularity in U.K. children’s TV as cover for his perverted activities since the 60s.
@@Pulsonar He was very popular here in Australia and lived here for a while too. Meanwhile, there was a huge moral panic against a lot of the heavy metal and punk singers (including the Sex Pistols) while people like Rolf and Jimmy got let off easily. Now it makes sense more than ever.
My mother always said she had horrible nightmares about Jimmy Saville when she was a child.

Thumbs up to them and all those who follow their examples in fighting for freedom and justice.

FAO all the retards moaning that Lydon should have spoken out. He DID, this recording is from 1978 and it was the BBC's decision not to broadcast this interview. OK? Would YOU have risked YOUR career to make unproven allegations against a mega famous, powerful person?? Course you fucking would!!
But this was the 1970's, people back then wouldn't dare to accuse a powerful person, and no one would dare to challenge Saville. Victims only came forward when he was dead.
Onmysheet That's bullshit. Many of his victims were the only ones who spoke out. The parents of the girl who killed herself spoke out. They went to police. They made allegations. They asked for investigations to be launched but they were fobbed off. Condescended to. Ignored. Often abused again. Called liars and gold diggers and sluts.
Because Saville was a procurer for the cops. For the politicians. For the entertainment industry and most especially for the royal family.

The BBC embraced Saville yet rejected John Lydon at the time. Time has shown Lydon was correct.
Give the man his due. Lydon was absolutely accurate. He felt something was wrong within the system.
Yet the public felt uncomfortable with his music and his statements.
Why do we ignore the truth. Best wishes to Lydon as always.
I am sure I speak for many other kids of my generation in the 70s who didnt know why, for all his charity, something didnt ring true about Saville. Then as I grew older I thought may be his persona was an ironic statement which was way over my head. But after his death the rumours that started echoed perhaps the instinct I had about him - or they didnt suprise me.
Kids, always trust your instincts and walk or run away, or scream for help- whatever it takes to keep you safe, even when your instincts are wrong. We all have instincts for a reason, listen to them, because one abuse is all it takes.
Like Mr Rogers said, kids can sense a phony from a mile away.
agreed! I always felt uneasy about the guy even as a child. He didn't seem to give proper personal space!
mojopin70 Why bother to comment unless youre trying to justify something from your past? As a kid I followed my instinct and walked away politely, then ran home. I said nothing, because nothing happened, but I sensed something was about to happen, and that made me feel as if I was a dirty minded kid. I later found out - much much later - that my instinct was right.
He offered my brother and I a lift home from Church in Crowthorne (his sister lived at the bottom of our road)... but he immediately made my hackles rise, definitely very creepy. Thank God I trusted my instincts more than I wanted to go on Jim'll Fix It! (which at 8 or 9 years old was pretty much what we all dreamed of)
It's shocking and depressing watching all our childhood 'idols' being unmasked as creeps and paedos... Jim'' Fix It, It's a Knockout, Rolf Harris.... just leaves you thinking 'who next?' Feel like it could be anyone.
Bloody awful. And SO much more common than anyone thought. I'm finding out awful stuff as I get older about friends whose fathers/relatives abused them as kids too. WTF was wrong with that generation? (Not that it's gone away!)
Absolutely. Everyone felt it deep down.

He was too off his head on drink and fun things to remember lies. It would be hard work too. Honesty is quick, simple and brutal sometimes. He only listed people who already sold their soul. Keith's passing hurt him. A lot. Want to see pain and honesty in a man? Watch his statement when Keith flint died. Man that was hard to see.
I never knew he came to Corby, I would have been 5 then. I can't remember the first time I saw him on telly but he always gave me the ick and looked like a dirty old man as my mother would say. Cigars, jewellery, the filthy grin and tracksuits
He was spot on about Saville, shame nobody listened at the time.
I remember him during the 70's and thinking what a prick. How wrong I was, seems like I was the prick.
He is brutally honest, a rare quality today with cancel culture.
He was a pointless noisemaker prick too, though, to be fair to the talentless hack he was. There is no cancel culture, by the way. It's consequence culture.
Continuing respect for Mr. Lydon
Time to make this clear, for those that didn't know: John Lydon was _never_ banned from the BBC. In fact, year after this, he did the Peel Sessions with PiL, PiL appeared on _ToTP_ playing "Death Disco", and did other appearances there (including the famous _OGWT_ performance with "Poptones") right up until PiL's hiatus in '92 or so, and Lydon would do the _Dancing in the Streets_ and _Seven Ages of Rock_ documentaries, in particular, the episodes where they talked about punk. Safe to say that he was close to the mark with Savile, but he was _never_ banned from the BBC. (A search for "PiL BBC" confirms this.) Of course, however, the bit with Jagger and Savile was trimmed.
You're right there. Lydon is a lying cunt and this interview was not broadcast . The part where he mentions Savile anyway.
Yep, it's just Lydon cashing in on the whole sordid affair, and all these people are falling for it and going on about how wonderful Lydon is. He claimed girls who'd been on TOTP had told him at the time that Savile had sexually assaulted them, but all he did was make these vague comments. Even if they had been broadcast, people would have probably taken them to mean that he was accusing Savile of being gay, not of being a child molestor. But Lydon even undercut his comments by saying "ain't I a bitch, eh, don't ya fink?" and laughing about it. Lydon later said that reporting Savile would have been seen as "grassing" then. Let that sink in. Not being seen as a "grass" was more important than trying to get a predator off the streets. There's a reason why Steve Jones said Lydon is a "total dick".
@CH1 Yes, it was a different time and Savile used that to his full advantage. He knew that being famous and connected to other famous people meant that his victims would be mostly too intimidated to say anything and wouldn't be believed if they did. Also, there was a lot more misogyny then and less concern about child abuse - many people would have just blamed the girl he abused as being "sluts". But none of that changes the fact that Lydon did not expose Savile and he does not deserve any credit for making a few vague comments about rumours he'd heard.
You are wrong about John Lydon not being banned. My Dad told me, that people in the broadcasting business, banned him, through his group, the Sex Pistols.
Wasn't there "rumours" about Peel too?
Another reason why I love John Lydon.
I like when a decent interviewer get John to talk , and they don't rehash the same stories we have all heard !
Prophetic words from John Lydon (Johnny Rotten) regarding Jimmy Saville...rather interesting.
Google Leon Brittan Elm Guest House if you really want to learn something. This country is SICK!

John Lydon is a ledge. Bless him x
Johnny was so ahead of his time here. It’s up there with Sinead O’Connor ripping up a picture of the pope.
Fight the real enemy indeed,
He was the first only one that reveal this.god damn 40 years of keeping this piece of info
Love it !!! Easier to name the ones I DONT want to kill !! All five of them .classic
In a the perfect world Johnny woulda been knighted and Jimmy Savile woulda been banned from BBC after this interview.
Johnny Rotten knew all about Jimmy Saville!
***** why can't you be more like Johnny Rotten. And you shmahat ma.
Because my parents aren't rich.
He wasn't wrong was he, Johnny?
So in 1978 Savile would have been 52 and very well respected and established sick old man surrounded by many more well respected and established sick old men; and the merry go round continues today no doubt.
wicked & once again it took 30 plus years to be heard ! sad
bad
mad
Guy I used to work with thought Saville was a Saint because once Saville was filmed holding hands with 2 nuns on a charity walk, he still thought the people who came forward to accuse him of sexually assaulting them ,were making it up.
What's telling about this clip is Lydon merely hints that he'd heard rumors about Savile, and that made the BBC nervous enough to ban him and never air this bit.
He was never banned from BBC. In fact, year after this, he did the Peel Sessions with PiL, PiL appeared on _ToTP_ playing "Death Disco", and did other appearances there (including the famous _OGWT_ performance with "Poptones") up until PiL's hiatus in '92 or so, and Lydon would do the _Dancing in the Streets_ and _Seven Ages of Rock_ documentaries, in particular, the episodes where they talked about punk. Safe to say that he was close to the mark with Savile, but he was _never_ banned from the BBC.
Bravo Mr Lydon Sir
He was right about Jimmy Saville along

A lot of celebrities spoke out about what was going on at the bbc studios and were axed from tv..

You got good taste.
missmightydread I just wish either he had or I had!!!
Lorraine Ward Feisty! I wish you had too!
Kevin Chamberlain I wish someone had - I don't care who.
e30316 Thing is, we should remember the filthy BBC are still the same organisation!
I will not pay for a tv licence but I hate the shit on it anyway. Clue yourself up if you wanna do the same.. :)
