Yes! Me and moms always use to shop at Schwegmann’s when I was a kid in New Orleans East. Memories.......😸
Hey that sounds like Me my grandma and my cousin to. I miss Swagman that was in the east of New Orleans too
He was German. I work for Schwegman for many years in the 70s. I miss that job.
Our family shopped at the ones in Metairie (where I grew up). I remember seeing the bar room in there. Lol! All of the guys waiting for their wives to finish makin' groceries! Thanks for a great video!
Another great example of why I think your stuff is way ahead of the game!
I enjoyed that very much man. That was a great video as always. Thanks for sharing the history.
Great old building.
We use to shop there when I was a kid. We opened my first savings account at BNO (Bank of New Orleans) inside the Schwegmann Supermaket! It was Walmart before Walmart-long before Walmart
What a fantastic story! I miss the small grocery store days. Another great lesson! Thanks for sharing!
They should make the first store a museum with all the antiques. I remember when we were kids a mini store was in children’s museum
I loved Schwegmann's.
RIP old beautiful building 😢
Hi NolaDeej! What a great building! I hope they never tear it down! I can just imagine going in there in 1900 and picking out bags of sugar and flour! It's a shame it has suffered graffiti and a little outside damage. Keep us posted on its condition when you can. Great history! Thanks for sharing!
pirategirl58 Thanks for watching! Yeah, I would have loved to visit this place back then to make my groceries :)
Every Saturday morning we went “up da road” to chalmette to “make groceries” 😆
Very informative video! I remember going to the one near Gen De Gaulle and Tall Timbers when I was a kid with my gma during the 80s-90s and was one of those folks looking for some nostalgic memorabilia once I left N.O. 💕 People are always looking for what reminds them of their good times. Loving your work!
so miss Schwegmann's. shopped at all of them..... but mostly the one on Veteran's
I loved this so much. Great job sir!
RIP...3/25/2020, The building, which had collapsed into a charred heap by early Wednesday morning, is where the chain of Schwegmann supermarkets began to evolve more than 150 years ago. The story is on WWLTV.
I am in my 30s and I still miss Schwegmann's. But why? I guess those huge old stores left an impression on me as a child. I played tourist last year and almost bought a t-shirt that says "Schwegmann's". It was $28 so I said NOPE.
Also had Shoe Town and a barber shop, Shoe repair ,fishing and tackle shop. The original Walmart .
Wow wonderful pictures !
Oh 😢 sad! I had no idea it’s all gone! My family use to shop at the Saint Claude store. My sister worked through high school at the Genteelly store! Left Nola in 83’ when I was 18 to live in Austin Tx
Yeah and this building burned down not long after I made the video unfortunately. My family would go to the one on Airline
Dude, some solid storytelling. I wish we could still get a 10% discount for getting our own groceries.
Oh wow. That was very informative of a part of history I never knew. I hate the big chain stores today. I prefer a small store with character. I guess I need to hit up eBay and maybe find a bag or something with a name. I collect old things like that. Thanks!
His son sure did destroy everything the dad built. Was a greedy guy. Im from New Orleans.
Always sad to see things like that go. Good story though.
RhettyforFun me too man! I’d love to see this turned into something worthwhile!
NOLADEEJ Seems to me that the city you're in is the right one to make that happen. They love to tear things down where I'm at.
My Hubz and I are from Marrero but have lived in Washington state. We’ll be passing through in late April.
Excellent video, Deej. Part of me hopes that we will see a resurgence in mom and pop stores again in our lifetime but I know that in today's internet world, it isn't likely. My grandfather owned a small grocery store in Chicago and it will forever hold the fondest memories of my childhood.
Great video Deej, informative, nostalgic and fun. Would have been cool to shop there.
Cool! Nice to know. You know on the Northern East coast there is a grocery chain called Wegman's!
Make'n groceries Schwegmann style !
Great history
When I was a little girl and something hurt like say my knee if I fell . My Daddy would rub my knee and say “ Don’t cry baby I will get you a new one at Schwegmanns ‘ . He had the same line for what ever hurt us . 💕💕💕💕💕💕
I remember when Swagman used to ask paper or plastic bags. I miss Swagman so very much.
Remember asking for paper so you could cover your school books . It was mandatory at My public schools .⚜️⚜️⚜️
My mom worked there under Rudy.
NOLADEEJ I met him when I was a child.
There’s a photo of my mom is Hank Williams’ caddy with the coins inlaid on the doors etc.
Great job! 😊
I'm going to come buy it! move in and then figure out what to make it what kind of business would do good in that neighborhood it's changed a lot! the needs of that community really don't need a coffee shop! What do you think would do best there besides me just making it into a really cool house! There's just not enough yard or any for that matter. thank you so much it's a great show!
I think the one on Chef Highway had a bar in it .
The first picture in the video is of my great grandfather, Henry Voelker (standing by the horse). Is it possible for me to get a copy of the picture? I have one like it, but it is only of him and the wagon. Excellent video!!!
Jean Phillips there is museum in old Gretna la has pics of Schwegman. German.
I wish Swagman was back
Great place need to be turned back to a country store or something
the People's Grocer. check it out
What year were you born fren? You look to be around my age.
That 1st building was also known as the old bell market also Piety street grocery, I used to work there when it was Piety street grocery.
My Aunt stayed in the 900 block of Desire around the corner. Right up the street you had the Cresent star bar and Mr lily's TV repair shop
I sure do miss Schwegmann's. I remember even when they closed them people just couldn't believe it. That and K&B. And McKenzies. And Krauss. And Maison Blanche. The 90s were brutal on our beloved places.
I miss them all 😞
Amen those were the good old days. Life was sweet then. 😢
Sad😢 my mom worked for many years at Maison Blanche on Canal. Is DH Holmes still around? We moved to Austin Tx in 83’ we loved Krauss too!
