- This is the opening to the long-running 1960s monthly radio programme about the British countryside, "The Countryside in (month)". "The Countryside in June" was recorded from the BBC Home Service on Sunday lunchtime 30 June 1963. The programme is introduced by C Gordon Glover. I think the announcer is Frank Phillips - can anyone confirm that?
This is followed by the theme music in full, a BBC commission in 1950, composed by Lambert Williamson and played by the BBC Northern Orchestra conducted by Charles Groves. This is the only recording ever made of this beautiful music (BBC library music disc 1950).
How lovely to have come across this half- forgotten gem at the end of such a beautiful June Sunday. I listened to it as a boy.
Used to listen to this programme under the blankets at home, it came on.well past my bedtime. I was very disappointed when it was cut to just four a year, Spring, Summer, etc. Suffering from dyslexia I struggled to read until suddenly at 11 years of age I could do so perfectly well, so the radio, especially the Home Service was a real lifeline for me. I would never have been able to get to university with out the education I gained from listening to such programmes.
I'm so pleased to have found this music at long last. It was a wonderful series - I used await each one eagerly.
Brings back a lot of memories.
Loved this programme :)
So good to hear this again, the music and the program took me away to the countryside i loved so much, listened to it every month in the 60's.
When i listened in the early seventies it was "countryside in (season)" spring, summer, autumn, winter.
Gosh, I remember this. Much better than watching TV!
Wonderful an early radio broadcast I looked forward to each month Tony Soper about estuary birds I think he lived on a houseboat .This programme was one of the few about natural history the introductory music transported you to the countryside thank you for making it available.
Lovely music first heard it over sixty years ago on radio.Great.
Wonderful. I was 12 yrs old and extatic in my discoveries of how beautiful each season was. I loved this programme. Any chance of a full episode? Life had a rosey glow, each day was an adventure fuelled by the inspiring programmes on the radio, stories in 'Boy's Own Adventure' books and Dysney films.
Wonderful memories of listening to this as a child. I wonder what the beautiful theme music is called?
"Rivers of the North of England" is on UA-cam. Beautiful music.
I too, remember this programme and music when I was a boy.
I've wanted to hear his for ages.....while we are on the subject of radio themes can anyone remember the theme music for the BBC Childrens' Hour production of the 'Eagle of the Ninth' it was in an odd tempo, not quite waltz time and seemed vaguely Dvorakian, I would love to hear it again.
Sorry I cant help but I agree about the Eagle of the Ninth, my brother and sister and I were spellbound by this programme, I remember a sci fi radio children's hour called Hessios the lost Planet. Bring back Uncle Mac and David Davies, they were from a time when it was worth having a 10/- Wireless License
Charles Woodcock I finally got it!!! It's Dvorak symphony number 7 third movement.
I may be mistaken but when I heard it I was back through the decades, glued to the 'wireless' for the Childrens Hour' Eagle of the Ninth.
It is C Gordon Glover, but the announcer before him does sound like John Snagge.
I wish someone had all of these recorded!
YES
I think the music is something like "on northrn rivers
It sounds more like John Snagge to me.
Didn't Duncan carse take over as announcer when c Gordon glover retired ?? Anyway many thanks. Warren
Lovely music😂
Announcer doesn't sound like Frank Phillips to me.
Any ideas on finding more audio archives of the program?
