After having so much fun during my stay in the Philippines for the last two weeks, I came back to Korea to introduce Philippines to my friends in Korea. As I was really impressed with Tocino while staying in the Philippines, I really wanted to introduce Tocino to my Korean friends. What my Koreans friends think about Filipino food, Tocino? Will they fall in love with Tocino as I did when I first tried it? Let's find out together then!

Isn’t it interesting to see my Korean friends have thought that Filipino foods would have herbs and spices!?
Actually many Koreans are not familiar with those herbs and spices especially those from India and Thailand!
I think this results from the difference in the way of cooking in each country!
I can say more than 80% of Koreans can’t eat cilantro(coriander) as we think it has somewhat strong smell and flavor! (but I wonder why we think garlic has not much strong smell and flavor lol…you know we put garlic quite often in almost every food!) It’s just all about how well we’re familiar with the specific food or an ingredient!
As a native Korean who lived in Korea for more than 15 years, I was also the one who can’t eat any food with either lemon grass or cilantro! But now I have no problem eating it!
To make it short, as both Thai food and Vietnamese food are popular in South Korea, many people who’ve never been to the Philippines easily think that Filipino food would be the same: using cilantro or lemon grass in the food. So that’s why my Korean friends in the video seemed to have life-long(?) stereotype on Filipino foods as well! (I used to have it too!) Anyway I’d like to introduce more Filipino foods to my Korean friends so that they get to know the Philippines better and better as time goes by! I hope more and more people in Korea know about many delicious Filipino cuisine as much as I do!

Actually, Filipino palate leans on the sweet-saucy side. Most of our cuisines have umami flavor slash with a little sweetness. But nevertheless, this is a good video. And to add another way of enjoying tocino is to dip it in sukang paombong. 😊

Nice. Sometimes tocino is eaten with “atsara” which is typically pickled papaya and carrots. I just thought of it when one of the guys suddenly craved for kimchi to match the dish lol

HOW TO MAKE TOCINO(RECIPE)
Ingredients
2 pounds pork (butt, shoulder, ham or belly) - cut into 1/4 inch thin3/4 cup brown sugar1 1/2 tablespoons salt3 cloves garlic - finely minced1 tablespoon soy sauce2 tablespoons rice vinegar1/4 cup fruit juice, (pineapple, apple)(optional)1/2 tablespoons finely ground black pepper1 tablespoon rice flour (optional)natural red food color (optional)
Instructions
In a big bowl, combine all ingredients except for the pork slices. Mix until well blended.
Add the pork and mix using the hand, use hand gloves to avoid stains. Mix for several minutes to an hour.
Transfer to a container with a cover and let it sit overnight on the counter.
Mix again for a couple of times before putting in the fridge. Cure for 24 hours or up to 3 days. Can be frozen afterwards and stored longer.

Thank you Jinyong...to all your korean friends ...and your country people....Breakfast is the most important meal for us...its not for heavy ...its for heavy work all day long in the morning ....we eat rice 3 times a day....plus meriendas time....espaghettis ,noodles or pancit ,pizzas etc. is not meal in Philippines its merrienda.. ...rice with combination of fish, meat or vegetables ...that is a real meal for the filipinos...thank you again and God bless to all...

A lot of your friends that tries filipino breakfast always ask "it's heavy or not easy to digest" the actual reason behind that why we eat heavy breakfast is for us gain strength or able to work heavily ahead of us. there's a saying for us Filipinos that "breakfast is the important meal of the day"
