    Absolutely love this tune and very excited to find this tutorial. Ungar actually composed this piece to commemorate the end of the 1982 session of the Ashokan dance camp that he and Molly Mason were running. According to Ungar, Ken Burns heard the tune in 1984 after he and Mason had recorded it and asked permission to use it in the series. They said yes and the rest is history....

    This song came out in Ken Burn’s Civil War documentary as I was a few years into fiddle lessons as a kid in Austin. I was mesmerized. I had to learn it. Now, 30 years later and living in Ken Burns’ stomping ground, it’s this tune that drew me back to the fiddle after dropping it at 15. I am so happy to come across this video-so clear. I love how you build up the skill, measure by measure. I am so grateful this is the first tutorial I opened. I am curious if bow direction is relevant. I guess I’ll find out in the next Ashokan video. I’m looking into your online lessons. Thank you so much!

The UA-cam lessons will continue to be available but the site has guided lessons with tabs, play alongs, etc. You can have free access to the site for the forum, blog, request list and the first few beginner lessons. I've been working on this for a very long time and just never 'felt' right...I listened to your video and realized that I had a few points wrong...many thanks...
    Oh and straight out of Wikipedia: ""Ashokan Farewell" was composed by Jay Ungar in 1982. It has served as a goodnight or farewell waltz at the annual Ashokan Fiddle & Dance Camps, run by the composer and his wife (Molly Mason, who gave the tune its name) at the lakefront campus (near Ashokan Reservoir) of the State University of New York at New Paltz. The tune was later used as the title theme of the 1990 PBS television miniseries The Civil War, by Ken Burns, as well as the 1991 compilation album Songs of the Civil War."
    Many thanks!

    Its great that you played that without your little finger,,,I was worried that I would need to use that little boy and it put me off somewhat,,,great stuff,,,thanks

    • @fiddl3hed
      @fiddl3hed  7 років тому

      Brian, so this is the thing about that little finger. Many fiddlers never develop it. You can play tunes without using it but there are some sounds you will never get out of the fiddle if you can't use it. Some tunes just sound great if you can use the 4th finger on the A string while playing open E string. (as an example of what I mean) It accents the note. You don't have to do it but it sounds so great sometimes. It is not hard. Just takes practice. That little finger, unless it has other issues, just needs to get stronger and you have to get more comfortable using it. Do some exercises where you just play open-1-2-3-4, 4-3-2-1-open (fingers) on the same string. Or practice your scales slowly using the 4th finger instead of the open string when you play the scales. Don't worry about speed. Again, not necessary to have it but it can add to the sound of the tune. Don't mean to be pushy here. Cheers.

    You have quite a few very good videos up here, but you should note that this tune wasn't written for "The Civil War".
    It was written in 1982, 8 years before Burns did his documentary. Burns heard the tune in 1984 and kept it in mind, eventually using it in his 1990 documentary.
    It was written one year at the close of Ungar's yearly Fiddle & Dance camp at The Ashokan Center in The Catskills, by the Ashokan Reservoir, the primary water source for New York City.
    The reservoir was formed by covering several small villages, Ashokan being the largest of them, and one of the few to be moved instead of simply abandoned..

    Dear Fiddlehed: I believe that the left hand tabs for the first quarter of the B part are in error. You have the first quarter B part beginning with (D2-3)-A0-2, where as in the video you actually play these four notes as: (D2-3)-A0-D2. Thus, I think the first quarter B part should read (D2-3)-A0-D2-0-A3-0-0-1-2-3-0-D2-1. At any rate, I really enjoy your teaching videos, and you are a very good teacher. I just turned 73 on 11-Feb-2017 and my daughter ordered me a very nice Ceclio 4/4 1BK electric violin for my birthday, which I received on 16-Feb-2017. I have been practicing every day since then using your excellent videos. I have never played the violin, but I did play the trumpet in my high-school days and also dabbled with the piano in my late 30's, so I can read music. As for the tune Ashokan Farewell, it is one of my favorite violin tunes, as I am a Civil War buff and have listen to the Civil War music track from Ken Burn's production hundreds of times. Just wanted you to know how much I appreciate your lessons and am confident the that, even at 73-years-old I can learn to play the instrument.

      Tom, I'll put it on the request list. I have limited time to create content so i tend to do tunes that have many requests. It will be on the list, though. Thanks for the feedback!

    I am sorry but i don't seem to be able to find the fingering chart you referenced while giving this lesson. I would love to be able to learn this tune and I am having a hard time following your visual demonstration....Again, my apologies.

    Great tune. How do you achieve the vibrato? Your left hand barely moves. Does the bow play it?

    • @fiddl3hed
      @fiddl3hed  4 місяці тому

      Yes it is, thanks for coming along on the journey 🎶
      Great point regarding vibrato. It is produced with the fingering/left hand, though is quite subtle, more in the fingers and reverberates out.

    Would you mind explaining what “to loop” means? Thank you!

    • @fiddl3hed
      @fiddl3hed  Рік тому +1

      Hello @jasminen273, thanks for reaching out. 🙏🏿
      Looping can simply mean repeating a section over and over, similar to what is done for the 1st quarter of this song at the 5:55 time mark.
      Here is a post with more ideas around looping:

    Your fiddle is visually beautiful with it’s shiny finish and subtle color plus has a very sweet sounding tune when you play. May I ask what make of violin is it and how long have you had it. You have mastered it well.

    Dude! I love learning tunes from you! I have subscribed. During the Covid Pandemic I swore I was going to re-teach myself the violin. (I was first chair in 3rd & 4th grade, then we moved and couldn't get more lessons so I lost it all. Or so I thought). It has been a long slog relearning scales and bowing technique. But today, I found your youtube and have easily practiced more than an hour solid, and didn't even realize it! I can't wait to learn more tunes from you. A question: do you do personalized zoom/skype lessons, and if so, what are your rates? I have a pretty fair ear, and can pick up at least the bones of many tunes, but sometimes, a phrase eludes me, as in the B part of Ashokan. It is for this reason I ask my question. :o) Best regards and thanks for the lesson!

    You are so good! Where do I send money? I am 78 year old beginner (one year). It would be helpful to move camera back from time to time so the bow strokes can be seen. Thanks for all your help.

    I hear a vibrato now and then in your playing yet your finger rarely moves.
    Are you doing a trill or an actual vibrato or am I just hearing things?
    Would like to see more on your technique.
    HMMM.. potential future video lesson?
