i just want to say of all the FAFSA videos, you are the most PRACTICAL videos around. Never made to just get views, you clearly give “ real life” scenarios out here.
I wish I would have found you on Monday while I was filling out my fasfa for returning back to school! I was definitely way to honest and it came back and bit me so hard 😭
Wow this was such an informative video. Thank you! Well I already did my FAFSA for my daughter for this year and wish I had seen this prior. Although I do believe I did most of it correctly . One part of it that I was a little stumped on as to how I should answer was when it came to the part about how many are my dependents in household. I am divorced and have one other child whom I have custody of but at income tax time my ex claims him as his dependent. I claim our daughter. So he felt on the FAFSA I shouldn’t include my son . I felt I should but really wasn’t sure! Great video 👍🏼
God bless you and all your undertakings, Ed! I’m a first-gen parent of a Junior and slowly starting to get anxious as senior year draws nearer. I feel like we all have a friend holding our hand as we go through this seemingly arduous process.
Thanks Ed, very informative. Getting ready to fill out the forms for this year. I have twins going off to college and a daughter in her first year of grad school. How do I show I will have 3 students in college? My daughter is not in the household(away at school). but we still support her.
Ed, I am PhD students, and my financial aid office held my funds, until it expires, then called yesterday and told they are hold me responsible for monies, they sat on since 3/26/2022. Plus, I am school teacher, so I shouldn't be charged at all right.
Ed, thank you for this very useful information. In regards to one-time inheritance money that I listed on my FAFSA, is there anything I can do about it affecting the EIC since most of the inheritance money went into a retirement account?
If it went into inheritance it would of had very little impact for the fafsa. It would of had a bigger impact on the CSS Profile though for some colleges.
All of these videos are so incredibly helpful. Thank you. I am watching now to learn about the college rankings I'm a bit late submitting FAFSA as I know it opened 10/1. Does this hurt me/my son?
If I am about to fill out the FAFSA in December 2023, but I haven’t reported my 2022 taxes as I have an extension, I only have the 2021 taxes, what can I do?
Thank you Ed if you’re FAFSA comes back that you cannot contribute anything to college zero and it’s a public university starting around 30,000 a year how much would you expect to get in grants and non-repayment loans in with the student have to take a student loan out to repay anything down the road thank you
I am helping a new refugee family fill out the FAFSA. They were moved here from Afghanistan last August as the US pulled out of that country. The student and parents had no US income in 2020. How do we report this on the FAFSA? Student and parents are permanent residents (green card holders) and have SSNs. Can we simply use the IRS download tool to show no income?
Thank you for all your videos. They have been very helpful... My oldest daughter is a senior in college and is looking to attend graduate school in Sept 2022. Can she and should she fill the Fafsa?
Thank you Ed for explaining this. I'm completing the FAFSA for 2022-23 on my own this year since I'm an independent. When I got on the dependency section, it asked about being homeless or self-supportung and at risk after July 2021 but it asks for tax info in 2020. I moved out of my parent's house in Aug. 2020 which means I was a dependent for most of 2020 but I was self sufficient for all of 2021. I don't know if this is an error in the system but 2021 tax returns should be used for the 22-23 school year. I want to get the maximum amount of aid since I am supporting myself entirely. Can you make a video about filling out the FAFSA for independent students please? Thank you!
I was wondering the same exact thing. I thought why are you using 20 taxes. I called the school and they sent me an exception paper to explain why 20 was different that 21
Hi Ed, thank you for the video very informative. What do u think my daughter 15,5 years old in the 10 grades, can we apply for FAFSA for the 🤓private school, if the answer is yes, will it affect years later for a University scholarship for another FAFSA, when she finishes school and heads up to university?
Thank you kindly for the provided information. Just a quick question, when the app was completed and I printed it for my records, I realized that I missed a question abt medicaid and free lunch. Did I really missed it, or nor? I tried going back but couldn't see it
I'm a care taker and I plan on going to school soon and I was going to fill out the FASFA I was wondering since I'm older then 24 and I do live with the elder of the house do I even need to fill out the parent section?
Thank you Ed. If you could answer my question, it would be appreciated. Parents have a small business registered as inc. with just a few employees. Also parents have an LLC which owns the building/property. This property is used solely by the small business as a place of operations. (Property mortgage is halfway paid off) Since small business does not have 100 employees, assets and so on do not need to be reported to FAFSA. Does LLC property need to be reported to FAFSA or not?
In my fafsa I say that I have a bachelor degree because I didn't understand English well in that time I was new in this country and my first language was French it was on 2020. Now I change it and write that I am a first year college. They ask me to give the prove to my bachelor degree and I don't know who to answer.
We own one home that we rent out, and our primary residence we do not own, and we pay rent (California real estate). How would this be treated on the FAFSA, and is there any way to treat the one home we own as our primary residence or to not count it as an asset on the FAFSA? Thanks!
Ed thank you for very informative video. I will be filling out the Fafsa form this coming October for my daughter. Since I am divorced but my ex is still living in the same house with me, should i count him as part of the household and do I have to also upload his W2 as well for Fafsa application? He is paying house expenses (mortgage, tax, etc.) Many Thanks!
Hi, if me and my wife are separated but not legally, and we still file a tax return together as married but the kids live in one household, 60% and the other household 40% do we both put our information on the FASFA form or just the one parent where the kids spend the most time with 8:55
My son is going to college next year I have 35 k in my total accounts what should I do to maximize the grant. No assets no mortgage but many bills income around 40k with a family of five
Do you know what’s the most money someone can obtain for semester. I’m receiving 3550 for fall, 3550 for spring and 3500 for summer. My EFC is 000. Is this the most, I can get?
I have a question about #7 mistakes, you mentioned more people living in the house will drag down Pell Grant? So fewer people will help increase the Pell grant? Thanks
Hi Ed, Thanks for everything! Will it be harmful to my son on the FAFSA that MY College Board Account as a Dad shows my huge education debt balance is in deferment? In other words will my overdue balance hurt his chances for Aid? Thank you.
My husband an I have been saving for a down payment on a house the past year and hope to purchase a home within next 6 months to a year. The money is in an online savings so we won't touch it. Should I report that monies? Our daughter is a senior in high school this year and we are planning to apply for FAFSA by end of this month.
Hi Ed, how do you or Not have to include if a grandparent has saved a 529 for grandchild and used to pay some tuition balance and the extra is put into a savings account for future semester expenses or carry over to next semester or year. Do you have to include in FAFSA since money is in students savings acct. Thanks
I am confused by the question "How much did your Parent 1 (father/mother/stepparent) earn from working (wages, salaries, tips, etc.) in 2020?" My husband is retired and receives Social Security income. Is SS considered "earned from working wages"?
Hey great video ! I just had a quick question, I am a student and I have money in my bank account that I have been saving for the past year, which I plan to use on a car. Would I put $0 for how much money I have ? or should I put the actual amount I have ? ORR SHOULD I TAKE OUT ALL MY MONEY FROM THE BANK LOL ? would I get a fine ? If you could answer my questions that would be great thanks !!
Hi, we have a college savings account for our daughter who is applying for FAFSA, do we have to declare that in the form because one of my friend said that we don’t have to. Thanks.
Hello Ed, when I apply for renewal do I choose to renew my form or start a new one. I made several mistakes on the 2021-22 application. Do they compare previous applications to the current one?
I just realized we made the mistake on 401K. It’s April now. College has already processed our fee according to it. Can we still go back and change the mistake? I need to apply for parent loan soon too.
I share custody 50/50 with the father of my two children. On taxes he claims one child and I , the other. For the college aged child, does the custodial parent for the FAFSA form have to be the one that claims him on the tax return? Our salaries are very different. Can we just use the parent with the lesser income? And can we do this when our second child also needs FAFSA?
Thank you for the info.. Been watching several videos similar than this but none of them talk about the scenario if you are married. Do I need to tell the how much money we have in the bank? It's technically my husband money since I didn't work. I want to go to school so I can get a better job in the future. Don't want to rely to my husband on everything . Tried the Federal Student Aid Estimator to see if I can be qualified for Pell grant and put all the information needed including how much asset we have .I put in saving accnt info etc. and the result for grant estimator came out zero dollars??? Am I too honest .? I'm afraid to fill up the FAFSA form and make mistake especially on this assets part.. Can I not include Saving Accnt Assets since it's not my personal money anyway?
For parent income. I get a W2 but my husband business is an S corporation and has nothing on the 3 lines indicated. Do I just report my wages. Does the IRS document override the manual enteries?
if you have only Roth IRA, not 401k nor T-IRA, do you put the amount of contribution to Roth IRA in the section of 92a question? contribution to tax deferred pensions and retirement savings.
I have a question about listing our savings account. In 2020 we took out an extra mortgage of $40,000 to pay off MY student loans and then student loan forebearance was extended and we waited to see if Biden cancels $10,000, So it looks like we have a huge savings account but it is slated for my student loans, which are still in limbo, waiting on Biden's forgiveness. Do we count this mortgage loan money in our savings? Also, we no longer claim our son on our taxes but he does live at home. Does this work to his benefit? if so, how
Any recommendations on filling out the Fafsa now with 2020 High income numbers or waiting until January and filling out with much much lower 2021 income numbers?
Can we still correct the FAFSAfor this school year. We put almost everything. My son is freshman in college and we just paid out of pocket. No financial aid.
Hey, thank you for the video, I'm a student who works and I got my tax form, but I didn't put or file my taxes into the fafsa only my parents, do I have to put how much I make???
When it comes to savings and mutual fund investment accounts, i have heard some people put them in Life Insurance accounts? Would this mean you don't have to put this money on your FAFSA like you woulda IRA?
Ed, nice video. We file our taxes married filing separate and the FAFSA in the past could not handle importing our info in this situation. Are there recommendations on filling out the FAFS in this situation? Do I just add the boxes from each W-2 or 1040? Thanks for the help.
This helped a lot! Cedar Grove HS in NJ. Class of 2023

Thank you for your wonderful informative videos. As a disabled parent how would this effect the FAFSA if at all?
Very likely your SSI would not count on the form
Thank you for reminders but you should add small business exclusion of business assets if smaller than 100 employees.
Thanks, your videos are very helpful!
Glad you like them!

You can indicated separated if they are not together and only count one parents info

Hi Ed, Thanks for everything! Will it be harmful to my son on the FAFSA that MY College Board Account as a Dad shows my huge education debt balance is in deferment? In other words will my overdue balance hurt his chances for Aid? Thank you.

Choose the Renewal it will make filling out easier. And yes the colleges do have previous years forms on file.
I just realized we made the mistake on 401K. It’s April now. College has already processed our fee according to it. Can we still go back and change the mistake? I need to apply for parent loan soon too.
Did you put your retirement on the fafsa?

Since it's 50/50 you can use either parent it does not matter for this academic year who claims the student. But starting next year it does.
Thank you for the info.. Been watching several videos similar than this but none of them talk about the scenario if you are married.

Hey Ed! Would I receive more money if I put on my FAFSA that I will be living at home or on campus?
For parent income. I get a W2 but my husband business is an S corporation and has nothing on the 3 lines indicated. Do I just report my wages. Does the IRS document override the manual enteries?
His income would likely show up on line 8 on the 1040 after deductions. Does it show up there?
@@edzamoracollegeprepchannel3820 yes that is what I used even though it didn't indicate in the tutorial
Good job. Note, it's not the "fasfa".
if you have only Roth IRA, not 401k nor T-IRA, do you put the amount of contribution to Roth IRA in the section of 92a question? contribution to tax deferred pensions and retirement savings.
For the fafsa any amount put into retirement they want to know about for that year
I have a question about listing our savings account. Yes any investments outside of retirement go on the Fafsa

I created my fafsa id, but now as my parents want to create their ID it shows, the SSN is already in use. What should I do?
Ed, nice video. We file our taxes married filing separate and the FAFSA in the past could not handle importing our info in this situation. Are there recommendations on filling out the FAFS in this situation? Do I just add the boxes from each W-2 or 1040? Thanks for the help.
