Hi from central Europe 🙂 I was wondering how high are the european prices compared to US prices so I went shopping yesterday and here are the results 😁 (had to do some math because of the metric system but I hope the results are correct 😄)
    Flour 5 lbs - 1,19 $ (vs. 2,19 $)
    Sugar 4 lbs - 2,27 (vs. 3,09)
    Oatmeal 2 lbs 10 oz - 1,88 (vs. 3,94)
    Salt 1 lb 10 oz - 0,32 (vs. 0,64)
    Pasta 1 lb - 1,29 (vs. 0,88)
    Rice 3 lbs - 2,64 (vs 2,19)
    Oil 48 fl oz - 2,78 (vs. 3,49)
    Italian seasoning 1 oz - 1,06 (vs. 1,12)
    Beans 14 oz - 0,74 (vs. 0,72)
    Peanut butter 18 oz - 2,22 (vs. 1,79)
I also did some fridge shopping:
    Butter 1 lb - 2,74
    10 medium eggs - 1,10
    Sliced cheese (gouda) 18 oz - 2,90
    Milk 34 fl oz - 0,58

Ok, this is my favorite comment EVER! You’re so sweet to go through all this trouble!
Would I be correct in thinking peanut butter is often thought of as an “American” food? Perhaps accounting for why it’s the only item more expensive in your area?
Regardless, thank you SO MUCH! It’s so cool to see this.

@@Homegrown_Hillary It was no trouble at all, I did it out of curiosity 😁
In many videos from US about budgets I see the rental prices are much higher, the salaries are much higher so I wanted to see the difference in grocery prices. It's good to know that we don't earn less money and pay more for food 😁
And yes, peanut butter is kind of "exotic food" here. I love it, my kids love it, but I don't know anyone else who eats it :)
PS: Thank you for your inspiring videos :)

i a simple weekly routine, I can quickly ship all Major grocery stores and Sam;s Club in my area for weekly price (Except for Aldi, they need to have a online site: you can't price check using door dash or other because they markup the grocery prices before you order, at least 25 to 35 percent). Walmart doesn't have ad anymore but I'll still take the time to check prices for ground beef, pork, and chicken. My simple suggestion is start to ledger every stock pantry item you buy. Write down a list of every can food, frozen food, baking items, spices, long term vegetables like onions, garlic, and start to track weekly sales for your area. Some sales only appear near holidays, others once or twice for a certain grocery chain. Example in my area Meijer's has the best prices for pork chops $1.49 lb or pork shoulder butt $ dollar to $1.49 lb, Krogers for ground beef in 3 or 5 lb logs $2.49 to 2.99 lb when it goes on sale, I buy boneless chicken and steaks from my local Butcher in Vacuum Sealed bags and I wait for prices to hit $1.49 then I buy 80 to 100 lbs. Pre Covid I never paid over $4.25 lb for New York, or Ribeye steak - I now pay $6.99 to $7.99 a lb 2 steaks per Vacuum Freezer bag. Buy a 7 cubic foot freezer for meat or you can, can meat in mason jars. Start buy canning jars when they go on sale in the spring and can your own bean, vegetables, tomatoes, broth, juice, jams, fruit (buy fruit when the price drops and then can it). I now no longer buy any pantry staple, meats or other at normal price. If I'm down to 3 of a certain pantry item an the sale price is really good I buy enough to last me up to 2 yrs. Especially if sales prices don't cycle in the same time periods they use to. Many of the prices I use to find before Covid have now stopped and I have now had to decide to pay the increases or stop using a brand or pantry item that is more of a treat compared to something I really need for my diet.

@progressiveheart1234 Yes! I love to make sesame noodles with peanut butter! I'm making my brother's favorite, peanut butter pie, this weekend for his birthday. There's also Ants on a Log, PB & Banana sandwiches (though, that's still obviously a sandwich), a West African Peanut Stew with PB as part of the soup base, and so many other goodies out there. Though, my two personal faves are peanut butter toast with pineapple preserves and peanut butter fudge.

My Aldi does have a clearance section but it's usually things from the Isle of shame that they're just trying to get rid of. Specialty items that are one-offs also end up there if they have a few left when the next round of product comes in

Walmart tomato paste is cheaper. I usually use 2 of the Aldi cans, but Walmart has a double size and it’s a good difference. If I use a lot of something I like to do what you do and figure the cheapest price and then buy a bunch of them at once, like a 6 month supply so I’m not popping in every week for the same item.

I firmly believe boxed broth/stock was a money-making ploy that was perpetrated on our parents in the 90s (if you're my age) and has since become a 'thing.' I know canned broth was available before then, but I question how much people were using it. Once Food Network type shows came into being, I swear, boxed stock did too and I bet the sales went through the roof. I think we're so much better off either making our own with bones and/or veg scraps or just using water and salt or yes, boullion, for more flavor. The only advantages I see are the boxes of "bone broth," intended for paleo/keto diets, that actually show a good amount of protein on their nutrition label, and/or having some (shelf stable) liquid on hand in the pantry should there be an issue with getting water to the house (broken pipes, water advisory, etc.).

Thank you for the comparison between the 2! I tried to do a comparison with some items i buy regularly in my monthly grocery haul. Instead of buying or trying to write things down I went around taking pictures of products then we i got home i compared to my Wal-Mart receipt. I found most items were a few cents cheaper but there was a few things like nuts that were a lot more cheaper. It would be great to do a taste/ performance comparison between the 2. When i had my girl's bridal shower, on the invitations i ask each person to bring a different spice to put into a spice basket for the bride & that was such a neat idea for a great start on pantry supplies. Again thanks for all your frugal tips!

Lol.. Reformed bean burner here😅. I used to set the beans to cook on the stove and go about my day until I smelled the burn 😂. Your looking at the concept of pantry shopping in the wrong way. She was just giving you a price comparison before sale price. I true pantry shopper doesn't buy just one box of oats. When it is a good price I buy enough to last me for up to 2 yrs. My pantry shelves have for example: 8 dozen cans of blue lake, french cut, corn, cream corn I paid .39 cents a can for. Aldi Salsa, 24 can on sale, Stove Top stuffing, dollar per box - 24 boxes, Olives - 8 jars, 50 lb bags of rice - .52 cents a lb that I have in several large rubbermaid container., and on and on. I don't buy at normal prices ever. I buy from a mix of grocery stores along with my bulk warehouses stores like Sam'sclub. The only thing I buy based on weekly sales is fresh vegetable produce like broccoli or other. A true pantry has enough of a certain item to last for at least a yr. If my yearly cycle of sale prices change, I may buy enough to last me for up to 2 yrs. Even items like block/shredded cheese I wait for a sale of $1.50 lb and I buy enough to last me for up to a month. My pantry has spices, can foods, broths, baking, canning supplies, stock pantry items to last at least a yr up to 3 yrs depending upon the food type. I save up to 25 to 50 percent below her comparison prices for everyday normal pricing. I am more frugal than most person could ever dream of being. I eat meat with every meal, and dress up my dishes with home canned or store bought pantry items along with a large array of spice profiles. I live on mostly a diet of chicken, fish, pork, and sometimes beef. I limit my carb intake at my age.

I only became an Aldi convert in the last year or so. Yesterday I went on my lunch to return some cucumbers and scored ground beef at 30% off that I have to use or freeze by today. I've also found ground pork for 50% off, and hamburgers 50% off that I just put together in a recipe that called for ground beef. It's few an far between but I'm so happy when I score! Walmart is just too overwhelming for me but occasionally I'll stop at the Neighborhood Walmart which is only groceries if I need a couple of things on the way home from work.

Though they often have massive packaging, you CAN buy regular sized things too. Have you ever been to one? 20lb at Walmart - .56 cents lb or 50lb at Sam"s club - .52 cents lb for long grain rice. Pantry shopping requires you to ledger sales prices for pantry items. Post Covid has changed things. Example: 5 oz light tuna before Covid on sale .49 cents per can; now a great per is .72 cents per can (Tuna companies got sued for market price fixing). Chest freezer and proper size pantry is key to saving money. I can easily save 25 to 40 percent on different types of meats, fish, and pantry items by only buying when on sale. When boneless chicken breast are on sale for $1.49 lb, I buy 80 lbs at a time and store it in vacuum freezer bags. Once you start to only buy items on sale you only need to buy fresh produce each week. I also can food in pint and quart jars - meats, beans, soups, fruit, vegetables, juice, broth. And I have a garden. I don't buy junk food for my pantry expect for maybe baking pantry items like chocolate chips when they are on sale. You start to learn what is actually a good sale price when you track yearly prices. Some pantry items items may only go on sale one or twice a year. I also hit large grocery chains the day after a holiday to buy certain type of items. Like Stove Top Stuffing - the day after Christmas they may have it marked down to $1.00 per box - I will buy 24 plus boxes at a time; I would never dream of paying $2.50 per box. If something goes on sale or it is reduce, buy enough to last for the next 2 yrs or go ahead and buy 80 lbs of chicken or beef. I never walk into a grocery store and buy a lb of chicken breast or lb of ground beef. I wait for them to drop to a price range I FEEL is ACTUALLY A GREAT SALE PRICE. MANY STORES MARK UP PRICES BEFORE A SALE IS ADVERTISED.

Great comparison video. I noticed that there were SOME things that were cheaper at Aldi vs Walmart, typically all in the staples aisles. I made a pricebook once upon a time when I lived near allllll the stores and I used to be a crazy coupon lady. Now I just buy it in bulk around the times when I think it will all be cheapest, and buy enough to last me almost a year. PS pantry staples tend to be "on sale" more often near Easter and Thanksgiving/Christmas when people do tons of baking. Im not saying I buy 50lbs of butter in November when its typically on sale for 2.50/lb but I'll be good again until right around the next time the sale comes up!!

German here, with German Aldi experiences. I have seen markdowns at Aldi, but they're never substantial enough to matter. Oh look this cheese is 7% cheaper, what a bargain!!
Only real sales I see are on stuff they need to get rid of. Like a pack of ham that expires in three days, or a seasonal item after the season ended, or just some random thing they got one shipment of two months ago and these three are the last ones left please take them.
ALDI is all about that consistent low pricing and low variety. I love it. I don't need five different options at 5€, when I can just have one good option at 3€. And at that point you don't need a sale to entice me, I know the price is good.

    • @Homegrown_Hillary

I loved all of your comparisons. The only thing I might have done is gotten an actual 3 lb bag or three 1 lb bags at Walmart for the rice to make sure that you had as close of a comparison as possible. That would have bumped up the Walmart price by a couple dollars

I actually filmed a section with the final totals including adjusted prices, but the chicken bouillon & spices were larger & cheaper at Walmart (whereas the peanut butter and rice were cheaper at Aldi) so it still was pretty darn close.

Everyday Hannaford prices beat several of these as I am sure you know (for those of you in northern New England). I don’t know how Hannaford does it but I am so thankful. Hannaford is also the only store I have ever seen with generic baked beans in a can. Easy enough to whip up on your own but sometimes you just want a can of baked beans for not a lot of $. Keep these great videos coming!

This is fascinating! We have tons of allergies in our family so we can't buy flour, rice, milk, peanut butter, eggs, corn and nothing with EDTA or food coloring or xanthan gums. Walmart comes in over twenty dollars cheaper for our pantry staples regularly. Also I think our Aldi's prices are higher than this. Sugar was five dollars last week, for example.
We mainly just buy meat, sweet potatoes and avocado oil 😅

Loved this video! I have been building up my pantry for 15 yrs..I buy in bulk at rock bottom prices and I’m brand loyal on some things like I won’t buy any other brand except for Jif peanut butter at Samsclub 2-pack (6-lbs in total) for what use to be $9.98..sadly it’s now $11.66 but thankfully I do have 50lbs maybe more stockpiled..I never thought to use it in a sauce so thanks for the tip! I use to love it in my cream of wheat and on vanilla ice cream at my job..it’s really excellent in cream of wheat..I’m gonna look up some recipes..I haven’t had to really buy a whole lot of these just filling back in what I use..Sugar I replaced was a real eye opener I paid $8.64 for a 10 lb bag from Samsclub online store which is free shipping since my Son pays for the membership plus Samsclub is 1-hr one way from my home plus a $2.00 bridge toll..I could have gotten cheaper not sure when you factor in the cost of gas and travel time for me anyway..nearest Walmart and Aldi is 40 mins away from me..Keeping well stocked is the key in my opinion to staying ahead of the inflation..I go to the store every 2-3 weeks just to restock my milk, heavy cream and if there is a really good sale on meat since this store is only 18 mins from me one way ..but it’s a pretty expensive store for 90% of the items compared to Walmart and Aldi..the milk and heavy cream which is my main items is actually cheaper at this store so I do make out better..ordering just 1-item with free delivery from Samsclub online has been amazing in my opinion.

Doesn't surprise me at all. Aldi even places their stores just around the corner from Walmarts because they want to leech Walmart customers. Aldi knows that Walmart can not compete with them. The trick is really shareholder value. See, Aldi doesn't care about shareholders or Wall St. They are a privately owned company. Actually the largest grocery chain in the world that's privately held. They're number 4 after Walmart, Amazon and the Schwarz group (also a German company). Aldi can run prices without having to think about profits, that means they can counter pretty much any price reduction Walmart dishes out because they don't have the SEC breathing down their necks about shareholders wanting their dividends, so if the desire for market share requires to make some losses they will happily do that. Aldi doesn't have shareholders. Also a reason why they treat their employees a lot nicer. Over here on the west coast of the US we have Trader Joe's - also Aldi owned. They intentionally overstaff their stores for a friendly customer experience and when the wildfires burned down a Trader Joes in my area in 2017, they not only retained all employees at full pay, they even paid for evacuation expenses, clothing, childcare and expenses like fixing smoke damaged houses of their employees when the insurance wouldn't cover it all. We're talking over a year of full pay and benefits for working part time at surrounding stores. Certainly it's not the greatest job in the world to work there, but to be honest: I have yet to find a Trader Joe's employee who hates his job as much as most Walmart employees. No surprise, after all Walmart has about 14500 employees in the US that actually qualify for SNAP and similar welfare programs. Aldi has zero employees qualifying for a government support program.

Can goods such as the no name or generic brand names never fails to have stems left in the green beans and pieces of corn cob in the canned corn ... Yuck 😝
Cheap hamburger meat you start out with a large patty until it's cooked and it shrinks to less than half it's original size.
No name Jell-O never sets up and end up drinking it just like pudding.
Pancake mix unless it's Bisquick , it takes a blender to completely get it mixed up with out lumps.
