      I know I like that quote, too. I went to a CC and transferred to a four-year institution and graduated with zero student loan debt. Unlike my little brother who went to a four year institution (UC Riverside) and graduate with a Finance degree and $89,000 in student loan debt.

    4.0 HS student attending community college, why? Affordability and the fact that I wanted to travel and figure out what I will be majoring in before dropping tens of thousands of dollars on an education. So I’m a freshman at community college at 25 years old. Major tip, join cappex not only to help you through finding scholarships but schools can view your profile and I’ve already been contacted by a school that I actually really want to attend in the Netherlands.

    I have to agree with this 100%. I am currently a senior in HS and I was told that I should apply to a 4 year university after I specifically told my guidance counselor that I did not believe it was right for me. I don’t want to be high in student loan debt.
    Unfortunately I started the process of applying and my anxiety had reached an all time high, and I had panic attacks almost daily.
    Once I told her that I stood firm on my decision, she told me that I (and I quote directly) “weigh my options” and still apply) when I told her that I did, and my anxiety was at an all time high, she said oh ok.
    I seriously thought it was ironic because my guidance counselor also attended a community college, and to push the idea of a 4 year to someone who obviously knows that it isn’t right for me, 😟
    So community college? Yes.

I’ve also been told I’ll never have the “college experience” if I go to community college (which may be partially true but why should it matter anyways?) anyways it’s good to see a nice informative video on the pros of community college vs my elite peers making it sound like going to community college is the worst thing in the world

      That "college experience" in my opinion only works if you are part or like a sorority because you have to have that experience to meet requirements and sororities are actually hard to get into and they do a lot of volunteer work and have special networks and certain charities they raise money, but for regular working adults like me it doesnt make sense to go to a huge university paying that expensive tuition AND living on campus. Like I work for a living I cant have a "college experience"

    I've been in a community college and I've been in a ivy league university
    both for engineering classes
    In the community college you had smaller classes, the professors had both job experience and experience teaching, the tutors were always available and the teachers even helped tutor if you asked
    In University the professor's put less effort into classes(many just took their lecture slides from someone else), the professors were also PhD students (so the school could save money, same went for the IT department), University over-charges for every service weather or not you use it
    I also expected the quality of stuff on campus to better, but they're both honestly about the same
    Exact opposite experiences from the stigma for both

    Wow !!!!! I am so happy I found your channel. I am on search for a good community college. And I agree 100% about the diversity in experience in CC. I lost my mother when I was 12 due to cancer and just about 7 months ago I lost my father due to covid 19. So I come in the list of people with on budget trying to do better for themselves. With so much to struggle with in life ahead as well I can’t imagine having tons of debt to pay for just getting good education. I really don’t believe that to live a great life you need to go to a good 4 year university but do what you can easily get to earn a better life. And I guess it’s better to study with people of different ages, experience and struggles, rather than a bunch of polished kids.
    I love how community colleges promote love for education and opportunities rather tons and tons of increasing tuitions fees.

  • @JM.5387

    Great video. Another pro is that many CCs have a dual enrollment program where high school students (including homeschool students) can take a few courses for free, which count for both high school and college credit. This is also a great option if your high school does not offer advanced math or science classes.

    • @brandontruong3110
      @brandontruong3110 5 років тому +3

      @@JoeBidenFanclub99 Not Ouida but typically you would want to get an associate's degree in the following (arts, science, and engineering) to make the transfer to a 4 year. For a business degree, just get an AA degree. Community college just focuses on the gen eds any way. Take some business courses like micro and macro econ, accounting, Calculus, etc at the community level as well.
      I hope this helps.

    • @magicalwizard99
      @magicalwizard99 3 роки тому +1

      This is an important point to make. I got an AFA in creative writing which I had to take a Capstone course for but those credits didnt transfer to the 4-year university I went to. With that said, a silver lining was that some of the required classes for my BA were completed via transfer credits from classes I took at CC (ex: I took "Play and Screenwriting" at CC and that counted as a transfer credit for "Intro to Screenwriting" at the 4-year school). My advice to students out there is to plan ahead for these types of things because you can save lots of time and money if you plan ahead a little bit. If youre at CC with the goal to get a Bachelor's degree after, be cognizant of what classes you need for the four year program you want, and take the classes at your CC that will knock out the most classes for the four year program.

In difference from you, I haven’t had anyone in my family attend to college before, so I’m most likely to be the first one. Back in high school I got into a few 4 year colleges, but couldn’t afford to go. I also got into a local CC but my “friends” made me feel bad about it, the stigma like you said, and I never went. I started working instead. 8 years later, I lost my job due to this pandemic but it’s kind of a blessing in disguise because now feels like the right time to go back to school. I can afford it this time too! So come fall semester I’ll be starting CC online and hopefully when this virus decides to go away, on campus.

Unfortunately, my grades got super bad and I have a very low GPA (a GPA that won't get me into a good college). I'm not even financially strong enough to attend a four year college. I'm a senior in high school and I will graduate in June 2021. I have been thinking of joining a community college so that after two years I can transfer to a four year college. In the meantime as a community college student I can continue working for others and even get a part-time job to pay my bills. If by any chance I fall short of money, I might have to work 8 hours. When I realized my GPA was very low I lost hope in myself but then I realized that I can still get a college degree if I attend a community college first.

    This video was well made and very helpful! I've been debating on what I want to do and more recently I'm thinking of going into a Soc degree through college, and I'm thinking that the local Community college in my area, which is Scott Community College in Bettendorf, Iowa, would be my first college, I would like to go to a state university but a-lot of them are way too far away, like from an hour to 3 hours, and there is a University in my area of the Quad Cities (Which by-the-way is a region of five cities in Southeastern Iowa and Northwestern Illinois) but that's a Liberal Arts college and it's cost about like you said in the video about LA Colleges they're overpriced, for the case of this particular college which is St. Ambrose University, cost about a-bit over 30,000 dollars. So I'm hoping once I get into Scott I might work hard to get a 3.0, somewhere in-between that and a 4.0 GPA to earned a scholarship. I've recently graduated from High School and right now I'm still unemployed but that might not be a problem if this one running candidate for Senator of my state (Iowa) get elected, she's a supporter of community colleges and she will makes them debt-free in our state, which will be very fortunate for me! But I'm still hoping to get employment just in case that doesn't happened, and saved up a-lot of money for my potential college. One more thing, what did you Majored in? That was another thing that I had in mind other than the fact I actually loved this video and enjoyed listening to all the stuff I need to know about attending a community college before I go to one, and you bring up a-lot of very good points! Thank you for the video!

    Can I do community college for 1-2 year and transfer and do the rest of my 4 year education at a university?

    • @TheGrownUpMillennial
      @TheGrownUpMillennial  5 років тому +34

      Hi! Great question! In the U.S., you can't get a 4 year degree from a community college - you can only get an associate's degree, which is equivalent to about the first two years of a Bachelor's. Most people (including myself!) go to a community college for the first two years, then transfer to a university for the last two years of our Bachelor's degree. Hope that helped and thanks for watching!

    Where can you go after community college if you liked smaller size classes and such?

    • @TheGrownUpMillennial
      @TheGrownUpMillennial  5 років тому

      Great question! To start, upper division classes are generally smaller than lower division classes as students specialize, so you'll have few (if any) of those notorious 400-students-in-a-stadium type classes if you transfer to a state university for your junior and senior years. You can also look to transfer to a state university with a smaller body. I personally recommend going in-state, as it is cheaper than going out of state, but there are regional agreements that may let you go out of state fairly cheaply and you can select a state with smaller universities. For example, since CA is so large, our universities are pretty populous, but I had the option to go to schools in Nevada and Utah that were smaller and would've had smaller class sizes for only a little bit more money than their in-state tuition through the Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) for students on the West Coast. There are similar set ups for the South, Midwest, and New England. Hope that helps - thanks for watching!

    over half my senior class attended community college to save money. and the majority of these kids went to 1 of 2 colleges which r actually nice schools. even the smart kids went to a cc including our salutatorian. I always knew id either go straight to my dream university or to this 1 specific cc. I ended up going to a big satellite campus of that cc and then ill transfer. so ill get to stay home and work then move out instead of moving into the cc dorms in the middle of no where. the cc I go to isn't even my local cc. I hate my local cc. even tho 1 of its satellite campuses is across the road from my house and next door to my lil bros high school. Id rather wake up at 7am, take my brother to school next door to that cc, then commute 30 minutes away for school than attend there

      Great question! If you want to start your own business and it doesn't need a university education, then I say go for it. University can open a lot of doors, but going without a plan or graduating with a bunch of debt can close a lot of doors too. University isn't the only way to get an education or build important skills, so make the choice that makes sense for you as long as you're flexible, adaptable, and smart with your money. Good luck!

      As long as you make sure your courses such as prerequisites at community college are the exact courses that the universities accept. Personally in my experience try to get in contact with advisors/admissions offices at the university you want to transfer to as they’ll have all the information you’ll need to make sure you’re not taking classes you don’t need or isn’t accepted where you want to transfer.

    • @TheGrownUpMillennial
      @TheGrownUpMillennial  6 років тому +2

      Hi Deborah - great questions! I actually had several international friends while attending community college, because it was MUCH cheaper than going straight to a university for them as well. Many states have programs where you can take two years at a community college and then transfer as a third year. Or you can take a few community college classes and you will get credit at a university, but you will have to start as a first year and not all the classes will transfer. Generally, I think the transfer program is better because the schools have agreements and you will know exactly which classes transfer and which do not (and you save much more money!). Thanks for watching!

    I really think CC is the best option for me but i only have one concern, since it is easier than a four year college, does that cause any issues when transferring in terms of the rigor?

    • @TheGrownUpMillennial
      @TheGrownUpMillennial  4 роки тому +1

      Great question! I think that is a risk, but has a lot to do with how you approach CC. Some people will slack off in CC because they perceive it to be easier and then have a very hard time transitioning. I didn't have any transition issues academically because while in CC, I took it very seriously - I sought out harder courses (honors program, etc.), developed and maintained my study skills, took more classes than required, joined extracurriculars, etc. So when I transferred, I had all the skills and experience I needed to easily jump into my upper division classes. In other words, if you seek out a rigorous CC experience, you can find it and I think that's great preparation for transferring. Thanks for watching!
