Disney probably made the stained glass a harlequin pattern in the lancet windows to avoid depicting a religious preference. Also, it's likely cheaper (labor-wise) to repeat the harlequin pattern.
I think it might mainly be a need to do a more simple design at the back of the drawing. There's already soooo much detail on The background that Eywind Earle (the artist on sleeping beauty) painted by himself. And the space might be so little to paint something too elaborate. Also, there's already a lot of blue and red in the rest of the picture so he changed the colour to create more contrast
there'd be far too much contrast and very dense lines in the windows if they were actual stained glass windows, and not the suggestion of them. but backgrounds are painted once, so usually they spare no expense. i'd wager it's an aesthetic choice to have a simple, and muted design for their stained glass, to not have them be busy/distracting
Surely it would of had a fireplace though, otherwise the books would get damp and you wouldn't want to spend time in there. The few manor houses I got to visit in the uk and the castle in Sweden I've been to, all had fireplaces in their libraries. It seems so odd to say that you wouldn't have them in the library.
@@neralizashe said it wouldn't be in that part of the library, not that it wouldn't be there at all. Most likely it would be on a wall with no books or a wall with more stone to protect the books
A humble suggestion to AD - Rather than just comparing the fantasy with Real life, architects should also construct an Image out of it, of how it would look like in real-life in a whole picture.
Love this video. It’s fun to see details I’ve missed over the years of viewing these films and learning more about architecture and architectural history.
Cinderella, Beauty and The Beast, are not much inspired in medieval times like the others, they’re much more 18th and 19th century, and palaces of these times do have grand staircases.
Not a Disney movie (even if they will be a debate on the comments) but I'd really like to see a video about the background on *Anastasia* To me the artstyle of the movie was always the most recognisable sign that it wasn't a Disney. Because unlike Disney movie, the background of Anastasia were more realistic and accurate and full of détails. Disney movies were more synthetised with a much more rounded shapes and more saturated colours. They put more emphasis on fantasy than realism.
There are a lot of great staircases in European palaces, like the one in the Royal Palace of Caserta or the Würzburg Residenz. The Library in Beauty and the Beast have more in common with the one in the University of Coimbra.
sorry, but spiral staircaises are standard issue in royal libraries of the 17th-19th centuries. they help you acess the mezzanine rooms and floors where the lionsshare of the collections are kept, withouth covering the shelves and maximising storage in the mezzanine itself. also in northern europe, libraries did actually have plenty of fireplaces. it was the only way of stopping frost and water damage during the cold winters.
The beauty and the beast library is VERY clearly inspired by the "joanina" library in the University of coimbra in Portugal. The columns in the movie are literal copies.
Although there wouldn't be enough content for a show, I wouldn't mind you taking a look at The Black Cat with Lugosi and Karloff. The design in that film is fascinating. It's everywhere. Even in Boris's hair.
Wow, I never thought about architect like this before, really eye-opening. I could be wrong, but in case you're still wondering which time in history Cinderella is based in, the last I heard was roughly between 1850-1860's (rough estimate).
The library 🥹😍 I cheered when you began talking about it, I feel like it has influenced me so much throughout my life. Love this. Thanks for this, so interesting!
What…wait a minute…did I just glimpse, admittedly for a nanosecond, a black-and-white photograph of my mom/grandfather descending the staircase at her debut at the Brown Palace Hotel?!
Such an educative and amazing video, let me just reference that in the Beauty and the Beast library, the neoclassical tapered columns, were actually inspired in one of the libraries you don't mention in the video eheh if you search "Biblioteca Joanina" in Coimbra, Portugal, built in 18th century, the columns are exactly the same - that's where they got inspired!
The Cinderella staircase, and most other staircases in Disney movies, is inspired by the Imperial Staircase of which indeed Palais Garnier is a 19th century example but have been known since the 16th century (the coudenberg palace and El Cortico come to mind, but even more so for the Disney movies the Grand Double staircase in the "Grand Palais" in Paris which is a art nouveau neo gothic masterpiece has been used as inspiration and you can really see the likeness in some movies. Another inspiration were the staircases, both inside and out, of the Palais de Justice in Brussels which is a 19th century showroom to model our of this world staircases. I believe 80% of that building is a staircase 😂
Going off of the Fashion (Which is a Hodge-Podge of Late 19TH Century Fashion). it's Roughly Between the 1860s on Through to the 1890s. But a Lot of People on Online Guess the Bustle Period (1870s/1880s). Mostly the 1870s as is Demonstrated in Historical Fanart...
Wonderful, thank you so much, this channel really opens minds and the architects/presenters are all so knowledgeable, do amazing detailed research and explain things so clearly. Best wishes to all
I’m thinking about the staircase in Tara that was a character unto itself in the film. I believe it had a transcendent effect on the importance of a stairway in the American psyche to sell the idea of wealth and splendor, as well as to point out a moment of occasion in a story.
Baroque staricase in Cindarella is clearly inspired by XVIII century Blathasar's Neuman designs for german archbishops in Bavaria - check staircase in so called Wurzburg Rezidenz and in Weissenstein Schloss in Pommersfelden. ☝🏻 Also msgnificent staircease in Bruchsal Schloss.
11:44 I don’t remember that scene in the movie Beauty and the beast, is it in the deleted scene? I watched beauty and the beast hundreds of times and they didn’t include that scene in the movie!
Another massive staircase that could have inspired the imagineers is the US Capitol on the National Mall side. It's Enormous!! Probably 2 stories tall!
I liked dess video and I whant Can you make a video of the ancient palace of Princess Jasmine of Iraq, Mulan of China, German Snow White, and the huts of the Indians of Pocahontas?
Sleeping beauty: I'm sorry, but how it can be inaccurate, when all those castles have been used by people for centuries after they were built up?! The descendants of the original owners lived there, so there's nothing special about living in a medieval castle in the 14th century!

I didn't realise how accurately baroque the library was except for the fire place. The level of attention to detail is amazing 😍

Knowledge is such an incredible thing
Thank you Meredith for sharing it with us
The library in B & B has always been breathtaking. So cool to see how close it was to those real life inspirations! Bravo to those animators!
I love this, as someone that works in animation these videos are a way to see how artist research and a create different locations.
The Cinderella staircase really reminds me of the garden staircase of the castle Chantilly, in terms of proportions and decorative elements
Love this video. It’s fun to see details I’ve missed over the years of viewing these films and learning more about architecture and architectural history.

Exactly inspired by Palaces, not castles
Yeah her comment about the Cinderella staircase not being “medieval” was alarming to me. It’s set in the 1860s!
@@f4gsforpele I had the exact same reaction! 😆 I was like, "who said anything about Cinderella being set in the medieval period...?" 🤨
@@f4gsforpele she just missed all of the dozens of soldiers who were in the napoleonic uniforms and said "this must be bad medieval" lol
Exactly! I don't know why she compares it to medieval caslltles?

Just google palaces in St.Petersburg, that's basically it :D
There are a lot of great staircases in European palaces, like the one in the Royal Palace of Caserta or the Würzburg Residenz. The Library in Beauty and the Beast have more in common with the one in the University of Coimbra.
Exactly! Staircase in Würzburg Residenz and Weißenstein Palace in Pommersfelden immediately came to my mind!

The winter palace and Hermitage Museum was built in the XVIII century and has a gorgeous staircase that reminds of Cinderella
You mean the Jordan staircase? :))

I loved this episode. Such a fun way to look at architecture through fantasy films like Disney.
The library 🥹😍 I cheered when you began talking about it, I feel like it has influenced me so much throughout my life. Love this. Thanks for this, so interesting!
She could have roasted them but she was really supportive of the artistic choices made which was nice :)
I'm already stoked for this video!
The library in Beauty and the Beast imo looks just like the Admont Abbey Library, also in Austria!
What…wait a minute…did I just glimpse, admittedly for a nanosecond, a black-and-white photograph of my mom/grandfather descending the staircase at her debut at the Brown Palace Hotel?!
This is the equivalent of name dropping but tell us more
at 7:15?
With a name like Charles Hamilton I’d venture to believe you…

Admont Abbey library for sure

It would be very interesting if you could analyze the architecture of the castles in the 'Castlevania' video games !

re-loving medieval architecture!
For the Beauty & Beast Library, another real-life counterpart would be Klementinum Baroque Library in Prague.
Great! Aunty, Castles are lovely and safe places to live.
Well, we're not talking about laws and order like today, we're talking about architectural design and how it inspired the settings the artists made.
I went to the Library of Saint Gall a few years ago it was surreal and all I could think of is Beauty & the Beast!
I’m excited and the video is just starting lol
I’m thinking about the staircase in Tara that was a character unto itself in the film. I believe it had a transcendent effect on the importance of a stairway in the American psyche to sell the idea of wealth and splendor, as well as to point out a moment of occasion in a story.
What an interesting topic! Really fun to watch and learn all these things 😊
Also check out this library: Biblioteca do Palácio de Mafra
Thank you for this video...while extremely educational...it definitely added a fun factor
Amazing as always.
I enjoy these and the haunted city tours more than the celeb homes!
In the Palais des Ducs de Bourgogne there is the most beautiful staircase I've ever seen ! it's the escaliers Gabriel

I'm so happy to look at you again❤️
I'm watching your video on my english lesson
Дякую вам за цікаве та пізнавальне відео 👍
this was really fun!
This is so interesting, I love this!!!
Can someone please build this staircase, so we can all visit
great video!
Cone Segmental Elbows, Cones and other.
That was pretty cool.
I’m just waiting for Cinderella’s castle to show up in Bridgerton
Very interesting! Thank you, 🙏

Cinderella castle was inspired by palaces, not castles. Check out Buckingham Palace staircase.
Super interesting
Might be Traditionalist architecture in Cinderella, beauty and the beast, sleeping beauty
Might be Neo-Traditionalist architecture in frozen
Actually, the Beast did learn to read, but it has ''just been so long''.
I liked dess video and I whant Can you make a video of the ancient palace of Princess Jasmine of Iraq, Mulan of China, German Snow White, and the huts of the Indians of Pocahontas?
Some of these locations seem to appear in Bridgerton...
Now I really wanna live in these places
Edit - thanks for 1k likes ❤
I like medievalism.
How not to refer to the Biblioteca ambrosiana in Milan?
It is way cool that you know this stuff.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
i ❤ this
I'm just realising that the shield/weapon of the black eagle with the gold background appears to be German? Sleeping beauty is set in Germany?!
That's also what I noticed which is so confusing since most sources say it's either English or French!
💗
Sleeping beauty:

So the Disney castle interiors are iconic but the real-world are just real🤣 Muricans...
Animal
👀🤣
I don't like how Disney ruins original European Fairy Tales..
Disney movies and animation of the past even as recently as frozen didn't feel the need to be woke.
Snow White was all about communism. You should definitely boycott it.
