The car is chargeable. So basically you charge it just like you’d fill up gas, except you charge it less times than filling up gas. Also in the end of the day, electricity charging a car is cheaper in the long run than filling up gas. It’s defiantly a game changer, it’s a win win for the environment, for the NYPD and for the tax payers.

Better long term? Excuse me? Prius models that are over 10 year olds and still have the original batteries with hundreds of thousand of miles on them still run perfectly. They have the same long term usage. And it is a proven fact that hybrid cars require less maintenance than purely fuel cars. That’s besides the gas they save. Now is your concern about the batteries. If you actually care about the environment you’d dispose of the battery at the right place where it’s recycled and not wasted which harms the environment. Also, these aren’t plug in hybrids, you don’t charge them yourself. The car charges itself while driving.
Retired NYPD 4 years ago... and the hybrids we had, were not good. They were civilian cars with emergency lights and sirens... that’s it. They cost more to buy, but save fuel... this is true. At that point, it’s even. Now consider the cost of repairs - gas vs hybrid. The extended out of service times... especially for the “sedan” also known as the Fusion. Which is no longer sold in the US. The hybrid may be suitable for Traffic & School Safety divisions... but not for patrol.
Not so much speed.. but reliability. The hybrids didn’t hold up well. The civilian models couldn’t handle the wear and tear. Maybe the new police models will hold up better.

In Manhattan they have the West Side Hwy and the FDR and in Queens and Brooklyn they have the LIE, BQE, Belt Pkwy, Grand Central Pkwy, Cross Island Pkwy, the Van Wyck. Traffic moves moderately at most times and in down times such as late night or holidays traffic is pretty much non existent just like this pass holiday I was able to get to Manhhatan from Queens in a decent time. The surface streets is where the most traffic is because of gridlock.
Both are phenomenal and beautiful vehicles. Unfortunately, most Americans prefer bigger vehicles such as SUVs, and trucks. I really hope they don't discontinue producing sedans...
I went to school for policing. I also work at a police department. You don't understand the feeling of driving a cop car. The adrenaling is pumping!!! It was so much I couldn't even hear sirens :D... I was clenching on to the seat.
The technology wasn't there 10 years ago. Full electric technology isn't there yet. Cops need 12+ hours of battery life in a lot of areas without a recharge.

Here in CONCORD,NH ALL of our City & State Maintenance Vehicles are AMBER-YELLOW LIGHT'S, also 2 of our New Heavy Maintenance Vehicles do have ORANGE & AMBER LIGHT'S, but I RARELY see these vehicles on the road. The only time I see them is during the winter season.
Ford debuted their hybrid tech 10 years ago, they should have had fusion hybrid interceptors then, such an easy-to-see use case, and the perfect size for a cop car IMO

This is an interesting challenge, and maybe it works. No Idling, fast speed, and can still do their job because they aren't expected to drive 300 miles. I wonder if there's options for long endurance roles where charging isn't possible, but duration is.
NTekNiklaus ah. Not sure why they don’t use BMW’s in all honesty. Great vehicles for policing, it’s the go to in the UK. Armed police usually have the X5 and the 5 series touring is another heavily used model. The performance and handling is great, in the UK it’s a must with the tight roads and with the 3 litres 530D or 530i for example they can pretty much keep up with anything.
900 gallons specifically when idling, 1500 gallons saved yearly in terms of overall use. I was confused too until I rewatched that part, then I realized the 900 gallons they were talking about was the idling fuel economy and not the total fuel economy.
Makes a ton of sense for a cop - the gas savings pays for the hybrid equipment in no more than 1.5 years. It would take much longer for a normal driver that does not idle 5 hours a day.

The model 3 has 8 camera inside and the outside of the car and it is recording 24/7 (if you want it to) and it also got 12 ultrasonic sensors if the car thinks you are about to crash to derail car tries its best you get you out of the situation. So, in my point of view, Tesla has more specs than required by a normal cop car.

How old is this video? The Fusion hybrid has been in the NYPD for YEARS and is being phased out as Ford is discontinuing the Fusion. The Explorer SUVs will do well. They’re AWD, with the rear axle being primary. They handle well and are powerful as well.

@@madtrucker0983 yeah it does matter because a lot of high performance driving will use up the batteries before they can be regenerated. They have this problem with high performance hybrid cars, the first few laps around the track are fast but then the batteries die and become anchors.
But those are compact cars. This is a true police interceptor. These are meant to be pushed hard and get the job done. Those bmw compacts are mearly a traffic control device or paper getter.
The car is actually very tight inside with the installation of the rmp tablet, printer 🖨, etc. when my old command started getting them. There we no cage inside the car. I understand why. I also heard the knob that controls the gears ⚙️ gets messed up as well. But what do expect. Those cars on patrol rarely get a break. They stay running in the streets. The car does run nice. Even though the car is low.
New York is the only city that I've ever seen that uses front-wheel drive Japanese police cars. You can't use front-wheel drive cars in a police chase. 99% of police departments know this.

This just in we spend 15 million on gas alone a year and we just spent 30 million on hybrid cars. We're going to have to write a lot more tickets
