Down jackets. Canada Goose, The North Face, and Patagonia. Excuse my language but these are the big fatty baddies of the winter jacket world. However, one brand that you most definitely heard of, Eddie Bauer, is the reason they all exist (and really, make jackets) today. Today we are diving butt first into the Eddie Bauer x Buck Mason Skyliner jacket and talking about how the heck we got here. In videos to come I'll be talking about how to find the perfect winter jacket for you! So stay tuned up!
Bye.

Until then, we’re here to tell you EVERYTHING you need to know about the best clothing out there, from the highest quality raw denim jeans to the warmest jackets to the sturdiest boots…the Iron Snail has got you covered. *HELLO EVERYONE I totally thought I'd get this video out by thanksgiving as you an tell*
I have this jacket for over 10yrs. Had one winter with no heat and I wore this all week to sleep and survive the cold. It saved my life. Still my go-to jacket every winter.
Why no heat?
In the late 60's my wife and I bought two down mummy sleeping bags from Eddy Bauer, with no zipper. You slide in from the top. Big puffy square quilt design. very warm but no way to ventilate. My wife installed a zipper down the side and across the bottom so we could use them as a quilt =, giving us a wider temperature rage to use them. We also bought two one pound down bag liners. to use in mild weather. They are still in our camping inventory. Nesting the down liner and the sleeping bag can keep you warm to way below -20C. The problem for X ski touring is bulk not weight .
This quilted coat from Buck Mason x Eddie Bauer is the first coat my girlfriend saw while we were shopping around that legitimately had up late at night still thinking about it for a week after we saw it… guess I know what she’s getting for Christmas. Thanks for all of the great content Michael, keep up the great work and I hope you and yours have a great holiday!
I have to buy it but don’t want to spend the $275 😬
@@JoshuaSlosserfound this at Marshalls for $59 had a small blem inside but looks marvelous
I would HIGHLY recommend it!
I got lucky and got it on Black Friday for half off! I HAD to buy the Buck Mason one 🎉
@@doncommando I didn’t see any sale or promo codes for the buck mason? wtf I’d be pissed if I could have got it half off
My first job was working at the Eddie Bauer store in the mall. Perfect for a 6'2" 300lb offensive lineman with all the big and tall offerings. That year I begged my grandma for the grey herringbone Skyline we were offering at the time, and it's still one of my go-to jackets about 12 years later. The company has declined a fair amount, but they still make great jackets and flannels.
I worked at EB in HS back in 2002-2004 and they had this jacket in stores. They had an employee drawing and I won; that jacket is still in my closet.
o CONGRATS! That's actually pretty sweet
@@TheIronSnailactually? Were you expecting some other outcome?
I have an almost 50 year old Eddie Bauer Kara Koram parka. The nylon shell is wearing out but the jacket is still very, very warm. It used to be that in Northern Michigan i could not even put it on inside. I had to put it on outdoors .
I needed a fashion history expert with a sense of humor. The universe sent me you. I love this kind of entertainment. Thank you for existing.
Puffy north face jackets were cool in 2004. They had diamonds but the ones that came into style the last 5 years have lines not diamonds are are alot less puffy. Its more flattering.
For years, I thought my interest in watches and gear were mutually as exclusive as Toobers making specific content for each. Now, I know you’ve got vids for both! Great vid, Michael. I like G-Shocks for the same reason I love vintage Brown Labeled North Face, 1970s LL Bean and CG.
That's what I like to hear!! I'm thinking about doing some sporadic watch content here and there too!
This video is so so so good. Complete combination of info and humor. Great storytelling 👍👍👍
This video of yours got me to check out an Eddie Bauer bomber jacket and lucky for me, it was discounted (almost half off) to make way for the newer version. In 5 days I'll be the toast of the town, so to speak.
That 70’s 4 season jacket is THE JACKET. Can’t justify picking one up yet, but I’ve always loved those.
This is my favorite video you made. It is interesting and educative.
I bought this several years ago when they first reissued the sky liner. Has held up great. Looks great.
I have the Eddie Bauer 1936 down jacket in grey in too sizes (for wearing with with a short sleeve t-shit, and a larger one for wearing with a baselayer shirt and a thick wool sweater). It is minimalist, stylish and high quality. I got both on special for 135$ CAD during Boxing Day and Black Friday a few years ago. Their “free fuse” tech on some of their higher fill power thin down jackets is awesome. (The baffles are melted together instead of being stitched where cold wind and water can go through the stitching.) also a correction. What the shell is made of depends on the color. The black one as well as most other ones currently available are 73% nylon and 27%cotton while the gray or charcoal (i forget what it’s called) is 100%polyester. I find the nylon /cotton blend fabric attracts more pet hair and stains but is possibly more breathable and a hair less water resistant while the polyester one feels nicer to me and is more water resistant. Also definitely don’t go out for too long if its snowing a lot as it will eventually soak it up as its not waterproof and avoid any amount of rain. I thankfully haven’t gotten it wet enough to where i noticed it lost any warmth though. Perhaps spraying it with a waterproofing spray would help. Huckleberry makes a much more costly version of this jacket that has a wool lining instead of synthetic (synthetic is more durable but noticeably less breathable) and 800 fill power down instead of the usual 650fp (80/20). Although i don’t know if they add the same amount of down so its warmer or if they add less so its the same warmth but lighter weight.
Thanks for all the info! I should have specified I was talking about the Eddie Bauer x Buck Mason collaboration but you're right on the money!
Also, I had the Huckberry one and it was AMAZING! Crushed this one in terms of materials and functionality but this has that classic style going for it!
All the best!
There was a great collection between Eddie Bauer x Nigel Cabourn about 10 yrs ago. A skyliner, a skyliner vest and a skyliner parka. They added a nice coyote fur edged hood.
Columbia Turbo down is probably my favorite because it's a lightweight hybrid with a reflective liner. This is a beautiful jacket.
9:05 What a Canada Goose customer wants is a Canada Goose patch on the sleeve.
The quality of your videos are amazing 💥🤝🏽
THANK YOU!
I love these educational videos. No one tells stories like Michael 😤
THANK YOU!
I love EB down parkas. I got one in 1988 and foolishly gave it away about 5 years ago. I just bought new EB down parkas for my wife and me, and we’re loving them and sure to stay warm on the coldest days. I looked at Canada Goose too. Everyone in NYC seems to own a CG, but EB is just as good at 10-15% of the cost.
James W. Woods the first ascent of Canada’s highest peak, Mount Logan (1925). Woods developed the down-filled Woods Arctic Parka for the Canadian Arctic expedition that became the prototype for the extreme weather jacket that is now ubiquitous on Canadian streets in winter.
Canadian tire?
I have 1 Eddie Bauer rain 🌧️ jacket. I have the Eddie Bauer Xv jacket just in case I need to claim a cold 🥶 mountain 🏔️ I got the bomer jacket that is a standalone jacket and 3 older ones from EB that are great. I have lots of tee shirts and gloves 🧤 and pants 👖 I know that they’re other companies that make good jackets but you can find a EB jacket for 35% off and it will go up against anybody’s else’s jacket that cost triple the price 😊. My next EB purchase maybe 🤔 the heated gloves 🧤 lol 😂
Great jacket. Your boots rock too.
I love this channel 😭 and I love history of how we got everyday items. 10/10
TY!!
I got the TXL very warm. Love the tall fit.
I used to order direct from Eddie Bauer in the late 1960s. This was before they had any retail outlets outside of Seattle Washington. In the early 70s they expanded their retail operations and opened a store in Toronto, where I live. I still have and use many of their down jackets and vests. Unfortunately the Eddie Bauer brand has been usurped and cheapened over the years to what it is today. Woods produced down garments in Canada long before Eddie Bauer and in fact Ernest Hemingway mentions Woods down sleeping robes (now called bags) in his novel the Foe Whom the Bells Toll. Hemingway lived in Toronto in the 1920s and was familiar with Woods down goods using them on camping and canoe trips. As for Canada Goose, the brand did not exist more than 20 years ago and was "invented" as a marketing move by a Toronto garment company looking to expand its market. I have the Buck Mason + Eddie Bauer Skyliner jacket and love it. I also purchased the JJJJound + Eddie Bauer down vest colab. It is excellent and actually much superior to the original vest, which I purchased in 1972 and still wear. Great video, keep up the good work and top quality products!
3:47 😂 great job Michael
Can’t wait for your Woolly Mammoth jacket to hit your website for sale. When is it coming and do you have a ball park idea on the price it will cost.
I'm HOPING to have pre-orders open for Christmas and the price should be around $550!!
Can you do the Rocky Mountain Featherbed company? Pretty Please!
Thrifted an old kara koram sleeping bag thats down super stoked on it!
Wore this during service. Loved it
Love the look of that jacket! Unfortunately I just picked up a parka and vest from Canada Goose. Still tempted to pick this up as I have nothing like it. I do wish it came in other colors!
same! They make a similar version not via Buck mason but it's not the exact same
I love it when you speak french! 😅
It wasn't the down that was most buoyant compinent in the flight jackets. It was the Ventile cotton. That, and Ventile cotton is more water resistant than untreated nylon.
Fantastic low down !!
Will there be part 2 of it? I love the ritham of this story with vintage and new pieces describing it. Great job!
TY! Not a REAL part 2 but a sort of continuation! I also hope you've been well!
@@TheIronSnail im looking forward to it :)
I’ve had my 1936 Skyliner jacket for several years.
So are we not going to talk about the guy holding a bear's hand at 2:01?

Great entertaining video as usual!
THANK YOU!
I live in Canada, Down is how we survive winter.
a wee chilly up north!
Question for Michael and the community...is there an iron snail version for the ladies? My partner is jealous of me watching this channel all the time and asked if there's a "Ladies version"? Figured I'd pose it to you all!
I've tried this jacket on in store at Eddie Bauer a couple times. It's a nice jacket thats regularly on sale for $150 Canadian dollars. I see huckberry has a collab but at $300 USD. Nah I'm good. Great content though
Where im from we call it Patagucci.
now that's a fact^
your videos make me amused always, but this one had me laughing out loud in crowded public transit
HA! Glad to hear it!
I NEED that jacket!!!
I have one of these from the 40’s
WOAH! now im jealous
Very fun. Thanks!
ty!!
18lbs sleeping bag? The USMC sleeping system I was issued weighed 15lbs. Yes, it was warm, but it sucked carrying it.

didnt know that down jackets history could be so intriguing
well TY!
I think you caused Eddie Bauer website to crash 😂
HA that would be the coolest thing ive ever done
@@TheIronSnail went on there to buy a Skyliner and it kept crashing.
Happy Wednesday

@theironsnail can I send you a down parka ???? That’s inspired by the 30s outerwear
While I grew up with cotton, I have fallen out of love with it. Besides the drawbacks that it absorbs water/sweat and keeps it next to your skin and takes longer to dry, it also doesn’t launder well as it wrinkles and pills and stretches and isn’t very durable & it stains easily. Now there’s much better technical fabrics that out preforms it in every category!
When is that mammoth jacket making it's first appearance?
What size do I need for 5’10” 180lbs 34 waist size 42 suit jacket ?
I tried one on today. I’m 190 6’0 34 waist and 43 suit jacket and the medium fit me perfectly.
0:53 I love this...
well TY!
37 or 36?
Where can I buy this jacket. It seems like I can’t find any website
ebay
I have this jacket too! I love it
it's fantastic!
Great video
TY!
FYI - Before Canada Goose the company was Snow Goose. From a Canuck that has both.
Eddie Bauer may have patented the down jacket but George Finch wore one during the 1922 Everest expedition
Oh this is FASCINATING can't believe I missed that
I never hear you talk about how Canada goose get their down. About ten years ago alot of people boikotted canada goose because of the geese horrible living conditions. Do you know if thats gotten better now?
I'm actually planning a video about this in the coming weeks!
@@TheIronSnail cool! Love that :)

*MY SISTER BOUGHT ME* a Canada Goose jacket - the one at 0:35 - honestly I dont like it, the fabric is SO stiff and it is SO noisy. Also the hood is MASSIVe and gets in my way for vision.
Go back to the alpaca sleeve lining

Sadly it is out of production because the idiots that own EB don't know how to sustain making and selling TRUE outdoor wear for the outback".
Down is all well and good and amazing I guess, too bad it stinks and makes me sneeze...

OMG CUT THOSE WILD GRAPE VINES OUT OF THE TREES!
tell me more about this!
@@TheIronSnail hey! Wild grapevine will stress a tree by shading out the sun, and eventually can kill the tree. They add unsupported mass to limbs and cause them to break, among other stress factors. Cutting it at knee high will kill it and it'll fall out once it dies and dries out.

Ha-kaido? No
u see why I apologize in advance
Sorry, I must’ve been in a mood.
Japanese is intimidating but the words are spelled phonetically, so Hokkaido is pronounced “hoe-kai-doe.” The second K exists just to diminish my point.
screw the down jacket... I'm more interested in how they befriended a bear...You can just show that picture and gloss over it.
Yeah Eddie Bauers story is good fun PR…but absolutely bonkers from a scientific standpoint. If he did have a medical episode, it sounds more like dehydration caught up with him or he was otherwise ill and hadn’t realized and the extra bit of labor just wore him out…?
You have that Gen Z accent. You say “co’en” instead of Cotten. Dropping the T sound. Weird.
Worst watch review I’ve ever seen
