    Next Gen AMD CPUs Are Wild - How Zen 6 Can Fix CPUs
    AMD's Zen 5 Ryzen 9000 CPUs will be launching soon as well as Intel's Arrow Lake CPUs which are likely to bring substantial performance increases. Yet there is another. According to speculation and leaks the Zen 6 CPUs could be the largest improvement we have ever seen in the Zen microarchitecture.

      that is likely because they are doubling the maximum number of cores and there is not expected to be much is any decline in frequency over zen 5 which is already deliverying a massive IPC increase, meaning you could finally have a single die 16 core, 32 thread processors without the latency problems that can hit current 16 core processors because of the interconnect bottleneck hitting them two different ways (one for the I/O die and one for the processor to processor interconnect), which makes the increase in IPC on zen 6 axiomatic on the 16 core and 12 (and presumably future 14 core) chips.

    • @elmariachi5133
      @elmariachi5133 4 місяці тому +3

      @@Alphabet7 arm is just overhyped. Most people don't seem to have noticed, that the once 'so great' efficiency advantage has mostly vanished already with AMD's recent CPUs, with the AMDs of course being way more performant. And with performance on the ARM side growing, it will become even worse, because more performance always lower efficiency. Because of the later, the hype always was already bit silly, when ARM still was much slower than x86 and people yet compared efficiency. In the end ARM will be very close to x86 in performance as well as efficiency - but still with the disadvantage of not being compatible to decades of software.
      One important fact to know is:
      Each and every technology ever did and will lose efficiency the more you performance you forecefully try to get out, because this is simple physics. Once you leave the sweet spot you will gain way less performance than you need for additional power. It's the typical example of a 5GHz CPU needing twice as much power as a 4GHz CPU (of same arcitecture of course, becaue otherwise it wold be comparing apples to pears).
      The other important fact to know is:
      When comparing different architectures, be it different lines, like mobile and stationary CPUs, or different vendors with different aplpications, you will always see that these technologies are optimized to their respective niche. *Of course* ARM CPUs that only still exsist because of their popularity in mobile technologies* had a great efficiency as their focus for many years. Opposed to x86, where high performance was key for decades.
      But: changing each architecture, by adapting it for different applications (like many vendors are doing right now with increasing the performance of ARM cores) *WILL* unpreventably have negative impact on their efficiency. Of course this does not mean, that the overall efficiency has to become worse - but these cores' efficiency won't be as good as the efficiency of ARM cores that stil lare optimized towards maximum efficiency, like all the years before.
      Yes, there also are some architecture specific downsides and advantages but, as adr2t already said: Vendors are workigng at mitigating these.

    Interesting Zen 6 discussions are starting with Zen 5 not being out as of today May 23rd 2024. Leaving my two cents, there’s no way they’d launch a product with a 80% uplift in performance from the previous generation if we’re talking about instructions per clock anyway.
    I believe we as the consumers would have to skip multiple generations to finally get to an 80% improvement. Maybe Zen 2 to Zen 6 would be 80%. There’s just no way they’d unleash that much in one shot because it would cause consumers to not have to need or want another cpu for a longer amount of time. Just like phones, they upgrade this and that, maybe 20-30% better every year.

    • @impuls60
      @impuls60 4 місяці тому

      AMD lacks ambition as a company. Zen 5 is miniscule upgrade to the current tech. If they truly had ambition they would have demanded that their board partners made 8-10 layers motherboards for DDR5 8000Mhz support like the Asus Gene. Most mb cant support more than they do today.. Once Intel figures their fabs out their done for once again, Intel was the first company to buy 2nm production gear. I just hope Pat can get the old colossus Intel to perform again. At current prices chiplets are an offence to the consumer. They reap the benefits of cost saving and the customer is stuck with a mediocre cpu. If intel wanted to they could just increase prices like nVidia and offer a 10-12core lightning fast cpu. Its their old mindset of TDP and current pricing holding them back.

    Zen 5 is the complete overhauled architecture, everything is widened out, so there is really more performance comming!
    Zen 6 is a "just" minor optimization of the CPU cores of the Zen 5 CPUs, but it's priority lies in the IO DIE, the stacking/packaging technology etc, therefore I suspect the idle power sonsumption is finaly going down, sincwe the chiplet design consumes way more power in idle than every other CPU (Intel and AMDs own monolithic APUs).
    Also, when there is this LCAMM / whatever debate: ok, more bandwith. GPUs need bandwidth, not CPUs. CPUs need fast memory access, therefore low latency and the latency (in nanoseconds) hasn't really gotten better over the years. Even DDR2-800MHz CL4-4-4-12 was very good back in the day and now look at the timings and subtimings of the "standard" RAMs in the systems, especially in OEM systems. And then also on laptops RAM (SO-DIMMs). The CL-values rise more than the MT, therefore higher latency (in nanoseconds).
    CPU need low latency or better, less memory access in total, because that takes time! Therefore: more and faster L3 cache helps!
    GPUs need bandwidth! Access times / latency is far less critical. Hughes amounts of textures have to me moved.
    Also, VRAM, GDDR is based in DDR, just optimized for GPUs --> way more bandwidth but higher latency, because it doesn't matter.
    For APUs... well, a compromise must be found obviously.

    Oh Zen 6 80% faster than Zen 4, well in that case, assuming we are talking about multi threaded performance there is supposed to be a 50% increase in core count, so yeh that sounds completely reasonable, 80% faster in ST na I don't believe you.

    So they're basically moving the chiplets closer, because the old design has too much latency in design without X3D? And Infinity fabric is holding back things? I'm not buying that. Your being a performance snob. The 7600X matches the 5800X3D in many games.

    • @Samqdf
      @Samqdf 4 місяці тому

      It does for now however AMD can't afford to stand still and ignore this to be potentially overtaken by Intel. Keep in mind that that there are ever diminishing returns from the shrinking of the lithography and it's the optimisations in the CPU designs that are what's required to make the real worthwhile differences these days. It suspect that it also gives other advantages such as being able to fit more chiplets on a single substrate? I am open to input on my points.

  • @Austin1990

    I am turned off of Intel from 10th Gen and onward. Intel moved the BIOS chip off the CPU and onto the motherboard, like it was decades ago. It causes noticeable lag in the desktop similarly to Zen 1. What a step backwards!
    Then, beginning with Coffee Lake, Intel changed its Turbo specs where not all of the chips would perform the same even at stock settings due to variances in silicon. You would have OEM systems with an i7 8700k performing from +15% faster than AMD's R5 2600X to a tad slower. In the past, the silicon lottery was for OC'ers only!
    The Ryzen 7000X chips burning up was a bad move by AMD. But, Intel has made systemic poor design changes. I can just get a non-X or X3D chips by AMD.

    this remind me when athlonxp came out winning so much they forgot about latency issues that first i7 and i5 show how its done back then, i am very surprise intel survive this longer since pentium 4 to core i7 success ...it took them 3 years for research that really paid off while AMD was close to bankruptcy after releasing phenom to bulldozer debacle...not sure how amd be this close to lose it all from success of amd k6, athlon, amd64, phenom 2?? its like story with tortoise and hare ...in the end the tortoise wins due to experience and future planning while amd rushes to defeat that seems winnable to it, but froget that it can't learned from its mistakes
