How to Make a 1910's Lipstick

  • Finally a historical lipstick! I’d been hoping to recreate a historical lipstick formula for a while, and I’m so glad my first attempt at this 1918 formulation was such a success. This recipe is almost more of a tinted lipbalm than the modern idea of a lipstick, but it gives plenty of colour and performed surprisingly well in my wear tests. I’m not sure the colour shows up quite right on camera but the shades I’ve created are lovely earthy reds that work fabulously with my henna hair-colour.
    Recipe Notes
    • If you have a nut allergy, or prefer not to use the almond oil for some reason, any other thick, liquid oil can be substituted. (Olive oil may be a good choice but I haven't tried it in this recipe and am not sure how it affects the wear-time of the lipstick)
    • You can add a drop or two of Vitamin E oil to give this product an even longer shelf life (it will keep the oils from going rancid as quickly). Sometimes oils will already have vitamin E added, so check the bottle before adding more.
    • Here are some pigment guidelines based on the colours I experimented with, however you can use slightly more or less pigment depending on your preferences. These are based on using red iron oxide, which is available in several different of red tones (they do tend towards earthier tones though. For a vivid crimson, you will need either carmine or one of the oil-soluble artificial makeup pigments on the market).
    ---For a full batch in one colour: I suggest using 3/32 tsp of calcium carbonate and 3/16 tsp of pigments. Alternatively, you could just use between 1/8 tsp to 3/8 tsp of pigment and no calcium carbonate. Both perform well, but I preferred the one with the calcium carbonate (there wasn't a huge difference though).
    ---For three different colours: in three bowls place 1/32 tsp of calcium carbonate and 1/16 tsp of pigment (or eliminate the calcium carbonate and use 1/8 tsp of just iron oxide). Pour a third of the lipstick base over each of the pigments and stir to combine. I would suggest setting your bowls in a pan of just-boiled water when making multiple colours, as they will likely harden before you have time to fully blend the pigments into all three bowls.

    Update: after some continued wear tests, I've noticed the lipstick with the calcium carbonate doesn't feather as much as the one without. It's not necessary to add it, but the final product is slightly better if you do.

    I know what you mean about the mess of lipstick everywhere! Recently I scraped out the ends of my Revlon lip butters. I mashed them up, microwaved them (thinking I could get a good melt), packed it into a tube, then froze it in hopes I would get a nice firm end result. Not a chance! My tube is filled with mush. Still usable, but as I hoped. I wonder if I used what I have but added some wax and maybe even some oil if needed, then I'd get a firm lip product?? Any thoughts? THANK YOU! I enjoy what you find and share with us. Take care.

      Hmm... Usually more wax means a firmer product and more oil means a softer result, so I would think maybe melting in just a tiny bit of wax would be your best bet :)

    Would filling the tubes using a piking bag or a zipper bag with the corner cut off be easier?

      Only if you work reeeeaallly quickly. Otherwise the lipstick will solidify in the bag and it's harder to remelt once it's in a piping bag (I may have learned that one the hard way!).

    I want to try this recipe, but I have a question where do you get your pigment from?

    • @TheLongHairedFlapper
      @TheLongHairedFlapper  3 роки тому +3

      The pigments I'm using here are mostly from "TKB Trading", but I also buy pigments from "Windy Point Soap" and "Voyageur Soap & Candle" (those two are Canadian, so it's cheaper for me to buy from them and I've always been pleased with their products).

    I wonder if the lipstick was also used as a rouge? I feel like that could justify the large amount, but goodness, it would last a very long time!! Also, what if you didn’t like the color? That would be such a large batch for a color that didn’t turn out the way you had hoped/ intended- yikes!

    Wow! I never thought it would be so easy to make my own lipstick! Two questions, how long is the shelf life (apologies if you already said that), and do you have an affiliate link for those little lipstick tubes?

    • @TheLongHairedFlapper
      @TheLongHairedFlapper  3 роки тому +4

      Shelf-life should be pretty long, as there is no water in the product, and it will last as long as the oils will. Depends a bit on how old the oils are to begin with, but at least a year is a good guideline. (If it smells like old crayons, that means the oils have gone rancid and it's time for a new batch!)
      As for the lipstick tubes, I don't have an affiliate link but I checked the websites I normally buy them from and couldn't find them... I'm starting to wonder if they've been discontinued? I've bought them from TKB, as well as Les Ames Fleurs, in the past. They were called "thin bevel lipstick tubes".

    So this was the first lipstick ever made in 1918. I get it now. I just thought the first one was introduced and demonstrated in the early 1920’s.

    • @TheLongHairedFlapper
      @TheLongHairedFlapper  Рік тому

      No, I wouldn't think this is the first, although this was around the time lipstick started to become popular. Some women in the Victorian era used cochineal and alkanet to create red lip products (sometimes the term "rouge" applied to a product that was used to give colour to both the lips and cheeks), and I think there were some examples of lipstick used in ancient history (which is not my era of interest, so my knowledge there is pretty fuzzy).

    Was watching this again and had the idea of using a largish capacity syringe without needle to fill the lipstick tubes. They're sold as feeders for preemie kittens and puppies. If you get a chance to try this, hope it makes the process easier!
