my family and i usually crack the sheeps neck before we slit its throat. then we do all the other steps. i’ve seen people eat the blood which i havent seen
Yes! So many people judge people who live tradition pastoral lives. Usually they are privileged with a local Whole Foods and a pay check from their full time IT job. Let those people go live in the high desert for just a few days. These people work hard to survive. They are some of the most peaceful and spiritual people I know and cherish every animal they care for deeply.
Ok...I love the music and the editing is excellent, just a couple of things. So I understand its a sacred thing ok on that interviewing the lambs head and making the sound umm....PETA would be outraged! haha! Great video as always sir, loved the reaction shots!
I really don't like the title of "Navajo Slaughter." Dine' use the meat and animal parts for ceremonies. Sheep is sacred and it is a shameful thing to waste or consider gross. The Creator blessed the Dine' with animals (wildlife, sheep), water, culture and our language to connect us (K'e) with the Holy Ones. This video only shows the male involvement but the job belongs to the women which is why sheep butchering is part of the Miss Navajo Nation pageant. Also, the children are involved with easy tasks (cleaning the intestines) then progress to harder tasks as they get older. Now many may say it is barbaric but this is our culture and we fight to keep these traditions for future generations. Lastly, if you respect food then you should harvest it yourself whether that means farming, hunting and/or ranching.
Holly B Don't worry about it 😊the only difference in modern society is that people like others to kill the animals they consume. I'm Nigerian and my dad and his friends killed a goat for my older brothers 1st birthday in Australia and butchered it. It's gotta be done to eat in a traditional, skilful and respectful way. Many natives across the Americas, Canada, Africa and Pacific Islands and probably many more believe in the importance of using all the animal to honor it and not waste what it has provided.
This is pretty neat. I too want to post a video of what our Native club at the University did for our closing social. We butchered a sheep altogether as a club.
@clioandminnie the term "brutal" is so relative. So don't YOU try and make it out to be something else. As for the use of the words 'ritual' or 'tradition' that is, actions or behavior regularly & invariably followed by someone; A long established custom that has been passed on. The indian nation have long practiced the slaughter of animals such as goat, providing food in an otherwise barren land. For you to place judgement on them clearly shows your ignorance and foolish lack of education.
U should of tried the blood sausage. But I give u props for sticking around 2 watch n witness our Diné culture. We do take pride in butchering, I do and I am pretty sure every other person who committed on your post. If they feel bad about the animal then they're raised in the modern world.
Hey it's not like they have a McDonald's they can go to... being a vegetarian is a 1st world privilege - not so feasible for that navajo people. We should take a lesson from them, they don't waste a bit of the animal either!
So...I'm Navajo and love a good mutton roast. :) BUT...not really fawn of goat meat. :/ Anyhow...wanted to say...why was the goat that was slaughtered? Hasn't/wasn't been trimmed?? wool that is...Greek's love mutton and they do it before they slaughter their sheep/goats. (Trim that is) But WE Navajo's respect the slaughter...the Greeks...they don't...messy really. haha. just saying. :) watch some Andy Bourdain...u'll understand. :)
The brutal slaughter of an animal is just that, no matter what you want to call it, so don't make it out to be anything else! There's nothing 'ritual' or 'tradition' about it. Its slaughter, plain and simple.
