Thanks! Appreciate that. We have some other instructional trapping videos and should have a bobcat how-to on the way within the next month or so. Let us know what you think of those as well. 👍🏻
Very nice video. I trap in Northern BC Canada and also have a trapping channel. We have mink and muskrat but I target more beaver and otter. Fun watching other trappers methods.
Greetings from Montana. 🎃👍 Wonderful instructions and insight. I'm just starting trapping and learning the regs and equipment before anything. Thanks Subscribed
Is there anything in the world better than a prime muskrat? Honestly, I'd rather catch them over anything else. Great numbers, extremely sustainable, literally no one cares -- I've told my vegan friends that I like trapping muskrats, let them hold a hat, and they were like "oh yeah. we get that." -- and the fur is amazing. Super warm, super soft, and so pretty. I caught a really dark otter with a gorgeous throat patch last year. And honestly, now that I got one, IDK that I'll even bother with much other than muskrats.
Yes, flat 3/16 steel plate with coni bracket tack welded to it! Happy to hear you take some stuff from our videos. We should have a beaver video coming next week. Covers 330s and snares!
I trap in pa also, mostly just at home however I want to try other spots , do you need to ask permission at all of the bridges along roadways or can you just set them?
I think they already answered this in other comments. One said a bare plate that has the other parts tack welded and I see another reply that cited F&T Post, so maybe they have some on the site so you don’t have to make ur own. Hope this helps and good luck this season
The short answer is you don’t. Make sure there are muskrats there and find where they are going in the shallow using the methods shown in this video. Good luck!
Muskrats and beavers are not related because they are not similar in molecularity, muskrats are part of the hamster family along with the hamsters, lemmings, and voles, while beavers are their own family, interestingly, all semi-aquatic rodents evolved this niche independently, the mouse-like rodents (suborder Myomorpha) have many semi-aquatic members such as members of the hamster family like muskrats and water voles, in addition to many true mice and rats (families Muridae and Sigmodontidae) also having evolved semi-aquatic niches, even a few cavy-like rodents (suborder Caviomorpha) like the nutria (Myocastor coypus) and capybaras (genus Hydrochoerus) have evolved to be semi-aquatic, squirrel-like rodents (suborder Sciuromorpha) have only one group that evolved the semi-aquatic niche, the beavers, thus muskrats and beavers are only similar due to convergent evolution.
Who's land are you on. Your State Dept of Roads probably does NOT give permission to trap Rt-of Way land that they own, which is needed in every state I know of. Perhaps your's does but any land outside the Rt-of-Way probably has a different owner where permission would be needed UNLESS the state wildlife agency (DNR) owns it and it is allowed. Too many videos of mink trapping along a road/bridge/culvert. Can would-be fur takers do what they profess w/o a road/bridge/culvert? Those guys/gals would truly know their quarry in all situations.
I knew in the first 30 seconds this was going to be a good video.
Appreciate ya. More similar videos in our channel. Instructional bobcat coming next 🤘🏼
I’m not a trapper but this was an awesome video. So great how to’s. Keep’em coming!
Will do! In fact, we have a beaver video coming next week!
That crawfish set is sick
Thank you for your education. I appreciate the time and effort you put into this video.

Great video! First time seeing your channel and it did not disappoint!
Thanks man, really appreciate that! If you’re subscribed, hit the notification bell so YT actually tells you when we post a new video. 👍🏼

When I was young and in school, we used basket traps for muskrats with a slant door.
Another awesome video keep em coming I always learn something! What did you make your baseplate out of ? Flat steel with coni bracket?

My absolute favorite, mink m muskrat
How long are the chains on the coils with drags?
4-5 foot of chain

Just found you guys and I like what I'm seeing. Do you ever use colony traps.
Appreciate the comment! But no we don’t, only bc they’re illegal in PA.
New sub. Great video! Wondering what brand camo pants the bearded guy was wearing?
Cool video. I trap Pennsylvania
Good luck this season! 👍🏼
where do you get the baseplate from?

How do you trap muskrats in deep water and there is not very much muskrats
The short answer is you don’t. Make sure there are muskrats there and find where they are going in the shallow using the methods shown in this video. Good luck!
Yeah how those trap works
Can I make one
Which trap do you mean? A conibear or foothold? Both are for sale at a bunch of places. Check the F&T Post website.
I trapped my first muskrat 2 days ago
Congrats!!
Did you know that the Common Muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus) is the largest extant rodent of the hamster family?
I did not! I figured they were like beavers, but I’m not one of the Heirs trappers. Very neat! 🤣 -Brian

Where does the Nutria fall in at
I’d be interested to know that^ @indyreno2933
