Dalmatie Fig - Another Standard Fig Variety Worth Knowing

  • Taken from my Blog, FigBoss.com - "Dalmatie is another standard variety worth knowing about if you're a serious fig hobbyist. It's one of the classics. The origin of Dalmatie is unknown to me, but I think a lot of growers would probably agree that the French are responsible for making this fig popular in Europe.
It's a very large, green skinned, red interior fig that people often mistake for an Adriatic type fig. I know I did when I first got into growing figs. Just because it has green skin and a red interior, doesn't mean that they all will taste like an intense alpine strawberry or an intense raspberry. Although Dalmatie does share a similar-ish flavor, it's just not the same and in many grower's opinions, I doubt they would classify it as such. An Adriatic type fig, which I've yet to cover on this blog is a fig simply put, is very similar to the Adriatic fig that was grown commercially in California many years ago. It goes by many names since as many commercial figs inevitably do. It's much smaller and flat in shape. The only resemblance is really in the skin and pulp colors, so beware! Dalmatie seems to have a much sweet nectar filled pulp than the dense and sticky pulp of an Adriatic. While thickly textured, the nectar of Dalmatie is quite the surprise making it in my opinion an exquisite eating experience. Like a Black Madeira almost. It's very sweet, but also very thick.
What's shocking though about Dalmatie is its flavor in relation to its size. I can't think of a fig as large as Dalmatie that tastes nearly as good. In fact the brebas can be as large as 200 grams or more. Usually in humid climates, the larger the fig is, the worse it tastes. At least that's what I used to think. A lot of it in actuality has to do with the shape and Dalmatie has the perfect oval or ovoidal shape for a humid climate. It doesn't split easily and if it does, it's not major. Overall it's just a very well adapted, large and tasty fig. Can't ask for more to be honest.
Gayet as photographed below is a Dalmatie type fig that I was hoping would be smaller in size and a bit more slender in shape. This could make it a bit of a better choice over Dalmatie in humid places. So far that's not the case. The tree did not produce as much fruit as I would have expected and therefore a lot of energy was directed into 4 fruits. They were all massive. ~150ish grams.
Not a ton to say about Gayet yet. I'm sure it's quite hardy like Dalmatie, it produces breba and overall is of a large size. I was very surprised to learn that the pulp is exquisite. That nectar in the void is extremely good and that gives it a super thick texture."

The name is French, but the Variety comes from the Adriatic Coast Line in Croatia. That is why they have long deep-sliced leaves and finger-shaped lobes … to withstand the wind over there …

Thank you! I've been interested in growing figs for years and I finally went for it this season. Your spreadsheet and variety videos are just what I was looking for so I can pick what will do well in my short season (Capital district of NY, Zone 5b)

@@alexmac6386 I'm currently growing Chicago Hardy. Next year I'm adding Violette be Bordeaux from a friend's tree and a Kadota/Dotatta because we're history buffs and it's been documented back to the first century C.E. If you look at the video description, Ross has "The Ever-expanding Fruit Growing Spreadsheet" that has a bunch of great info in it.

My Dalmatie grows quite slowly and unvigorously, it's like a dwarf variety

Hi Ross, do you find this fig variety is not a good producer? I have 5 trees each one in 15 gallon pot. Soil, Fertilizer, sun location, water schedule is the same as the others. It just doesn’t produce figs or Brebas as the other figs. Let me know what you think about this tree. The taste is amazing, it just doesn’t give enough figs.

I've seen Dalmatie trees with fruits on every node. It's one of the most productive varieties by weight if you count the breba and main.

When was this recorded Ross? I live in CT which I thought was very similar temps/weather to you and my fig trees all have dropped their leaves and have been done for the season for over a month now, maybe we got earlier frosts than you I don't know. Also, all mine are in pots, not sure if that has anything to do with them being done earlier

The leaf looks quite similar to Doreé/ Goutte d'Or. Will you also report about this fig type in the future or is it too prone to splitting in your location? Greetings from Germany

Slugs and rats are the two most common things to leave holes in fruit, slugs leave perfectly circular tunnels/holes while rats will usually eat a small bit of the fruit and whole leaves depending on the plant, the main thing rats like that I grow is surprisingly peppers, they love to eat all the leaves on my pepper plants down to nubs and they'll eat half a pepper and leave the rest still on the plant or if it's small peppers they'll leave just a stub just like they do with the leaves xD .... slugs arent picky like rats tho, slugs will eat whatever is the closest leaf or fruit and slugs live in the soil and like to come out at night or on wet overcast days!
