Maybe it's just me but... from the hesitancy, words, and contrasting expressions between the girl and the boy... I get the feeling that the guy is cheerful, lighthearted, easily liked and accepted by others but the girl is more reserved, slow to trust, and hides her true emotions/facial expressions/depth of love because she is afraid of being vulnerable and takes longer to open up to others. She is thoughtful and internalizes everything, but often protects her inner self from the outside world unless she is sure that person can truly understand and accept her and will not try to tie her down or change her. But the guy mistakes this as hesitancy/lack of commitment... her reserved nature and need to protect herself before she can open up to her loved ones is mistaken as selfishness and loving herself more than anyone else when in actuality she just doesn't know how to show the depth of her feelings for the guy. Before she can even properly process the storm of emotions inside of her he starts misunderstanding her and saying things like ("maybe one day you can find someone who loves you more than you love yourself"), it makes it even more difficult to open up and be honest, "Oh... this whole time I was quietly beside him, he couldn't even see... could he even understand or believe my feelings? What if they have grown too much, what if it pushes him away? How can he show his love so easily, why can't he see what I cannot say...?" He mistakes her reserved nature for coldness... yet she is the one who floats easier than him and does not fall as hard in the moments that they fall a little. I think this means her feelings ran deeper and her internal commitment was actually stronger, she just couldn't express it in a way he could recognize (she says herself he'll never know the feelings he made her feel), which is why he much more easily cut his strings in the end. Funny how she was in essence blamed for being the "selfish" one when it was he who gave up first. It looks like truly, in the end, he really wasn't someone she could trust to show her true self to because he gave up before she even had the chance... he basically proved her fears right, which would make it even more difficult to open up in the future. I love the palpable pain you can feel in her voice and in the lyrics but how her facial expressions look cold and detached and misunderstood/alone. It shows the contrast/battle between her inner world and what she shows on the surface. In the end she just looks tired and alone, sort of like she expected him to give up on her but it still hurts anyway.
Additionally, at the beginning, you can count the strings tied to each person, and IU (representing the girl) has more.

분명 이 노래가 이별 노래라는 걸 알지만, 저는 그저 한심한 제 자신이 밉고 증오스러운 지금의 상황에서 왠지 모를 위로를 받게 되네요…
온라인 공간에 댓글을 남기는 것도, 제 얘기를 남기는 것도 참 어색하지만 지금으로서는 딱히 털어놓을 사람이 없어 글을 써 봅니다.
고등학교에 입학하여 코로나와 개인적인 일로 밤낮이 바뀌어 꾸준히 잘 해오던 공부를 지금까지도 등한시하게 되었습니다(지금와서 생각해보면 다 핑계일 뿐이고, 개인적인 일에 쓸데없이 1년간 모든 신경을 쏟았고, 스스로 공부에 대한 뚜렷한 주관과 습관이 부족했기 때문이라 생각합니다). 그렇게 몇몇 암기과목을 제외한 수학, 영어 등 주요과목에서의 성적은 곤두박칠쳤고, 수행평가조차 기한을 항상 헷갈려 기한보다 일찍 준비해 갈 때도 있었지만 대부분 기한에 임박하게 준비하거나 기한보다 늦게 준비해서 가는 일이 다반사였기 때문에 전체적인 내신이 처참하게 무너져 내렸습니다. 그렇게 마음속에 있던 경찰대라는 목표도 점차 희미해져 가다 고등학교 1학년을 마칠 때쯤 완전히 사라져버렸습니다.
그럼에도 불구하고 모의고사에서는 전체적인 성적이 1,2등급을 배회하고 있었기에(고2에 들어서부터는 내신성적과 비슷해져 갔지만…) 중학교 친구들과 성적 얘기가 나올 땐 모의고사 성적 위주로 이야기하며 제 자신의 문제점을 제대로 마주하지도, 친구들에게 솔직하게 털어놓지도 못한 사람이 되어버렸습니다. 아마 그런 행동이 지금의 상황을 만든 원인이자 시작점이 아닌가라는 생각으로 후회아닌 후회를 하고 있습니다.
이때부터 이미 제가 스스로를 한심하다고 생각해서인지 몇달 전까지 주기적으로 구글계정, 네이버 계정, 게임 계정 등 각종 계정들을 삭제했다가 다시 새로 만들고를 반복하고(지금까지 만들었다 삭제한 계정만 수십개는 거뜬히 넘을 정도로…) 핸드폰도 계속해서 초기화 시키는 이상한 습관을 갖고 있었고, 점점 각종 SNS(인스타, 페북, 카톡, 디코 등)계정을 없애다 이제는 핸드폰까지 꺼두어 놓고 집에 박혀있습니다. 스스로 너무 고립되어 있고 한심하다는 생각을 가진지도 오래되어 무엇을 해야하는지는 알고 있지만… 악습이 굳어진건지, 제 의지만으론 벗어나기가 쉽지 않네요…..
쓰지 못한 이야기도 많고, 생략한 말도 많지만 이렇게 글이라도 쓰고 나니 뭔가 후련한 기분이 드네요… 하루빨리 마음 편히 웃고 행복한 날이 왔으면 좋겠습니다…하하

This is about someone with avoidant attachment style that abruptly left the relationship. It's heartbreaking but IU is trying to remember him in the best light possible. It is an issue of attachment style - psychological issue. The scene of them both cutting cords for each other is literally spot on. That's what I just had to do with someone. Crazy she went through this at that age.
Ending Scene 🤝🏻 Love Wins All
This is just my interpretation of the mv (everyone can have different opinion this is just how i see the mv). So the numbers in the top left is the days of their story. The first scene and the scene when they watched their story is them reminiscing their past relationship. When they first met its day 1 so its CH01. The numbers kept going upwards because its the days of their relationship. It also rewinds and shows what soo hyun says. It means that that is what soo hyun was feeling/thinking. They dated and went through all of that together. The part where they cut the strings (like a puppet) is them trying to forget each other and kept growing apart. Their relationship ended and all they have is memories. But the memories are painful and are tied to themselves thats why they're cutting the strings (to be free from pain). At the end soo hyun cut the last string before iu means that he is freeing himself from their painful memories. It ends with iu who also wants to free herself from their painful memories.
This is just my opinion tho no bashing 😂😂

Everytime the girl hold the remote, it's like everything in the past has appeared again, so vividly. She is happy, but is painful at the same time. The lyrics is like from both of them; it's the message from the boy for her when he leave her, and also her hope that he should not be painful, because she don't want to see him suffering everyday. The ending is so hurt, but it's not miserable. Both of them always want the other to be happy. They just want to help the other to escape from the pain. As you can see at the ending, the girl also cut the strings, because she would like her love to be truly relieve and be away from all the pain, and finally the boy cut it himself to be truly escape himself from such a scenario.
The ending scene is sad but not miserable, because we know that they always keep the image of the other deep in their heart. I love this music video so much, from the lyrics to the content and effects of the MV. Thank you IU for her excellent product this time, and long time no see but congratulation Kim Soo Hyun because you have done a good job

1st : The guy just don't love her anymore, and want her to be happy. He don't hate her, or anything, he just found out he didn't love her enough, and that she also deserve to be happy.
2nd : The guy is very demonstrative while the girl is colder. He breaks up with her because he blames her for loving herself more than him (being cold = protecting herself). In the end, he's the first to cut the ropes/relationship, while the girl (at the very end) still cant cut them, and so she appears to be the one that loved him more. And she's sad/mad because he said he would love her, but he broke so "what is this ?" she said. That's the one I choose. Because I feel some anger in her words, or at least she's lost and don't understand him.

I kept coming to this song for the past 5 years and yet everytime I listen my eyes fill up with tears...every time I come, I find a new meaning to the lyrics and it is only now that I've fully understood it. this will always be my favourite song from IU. When i first listened to this i was so innocent, though it was sad i didn’t understand the depth and meaning of this song and mv.. and yet now ironically im going through the exact same thing in this mv.. almost as if i am IU. My first love, my first breakup and first heartbreak.. we kept hurting each other, he said the exact same words, that someday i will find someone better to love me the way i needed to be loved.. it hurt even more hearing that. This song explains every feeling and thought that im going through right now.. “You told me that you’ll love me.. what is this?” hits me so bad I’d never thought that this would happen to me but here we are.. everytime i hear this i get so emotional but yet so comforted. 💔

딱 지금 제 상황입니다..서로의 행복을 빌며 인연의 끈을 잘라버리는거.. 이런이별을 저도 했는데, 사실 이게 찐 어른들의 이별인지 뭔지도 모르겠고.. 이게 가장 깔끔한 이별인지도 잘 모르겠어요.. 심하게 싸우면서 서로에게 심한말을 하고 큰 상처를 주고 끝나는 그런 이별은 아니고 서로 앞으로 좋은 일만 있길 응원하면서 헤어졌기 때문에 틀림없이 좋은면도 있긴 하지만.. 두사람이 만나면서 똑같이 사랑하고 똑같이 식는게 아니다보니 둘중 한사람은 헤어지고 싶어하고.. 나머지 한사람은 그 모습을 보면서 힘든 상황을 지속하다 결국 놓아주는 그림이 되는 경우가 많거든요.. 결국 아직 끈을 놓고싶지 않았던 사람은 그냥 그렇게 남겨진채로 있는거에요. 아마 뮤비에서는 마지막에 아이유가 끈을 자르는 모습이 안나왔는데.. 그런걸 뜻하지 않았을까 싶어요.. 끈을 자르고싶지만 한번에 못잘라요... 남겨진 사람 입장에선.. 전혀 깔끔하지 않아요..ㅜ

I just want to give IU a proper credits for the song and the music video. She just executes everything perfectly. I would say that during a break up, no song can ever describe how you truly feels but IU made it in this video. From the warm beginning, the conversation, the flashback of the break up, the words that the guy said, to the very end. Break up is like this. You basically cut off each others string in order to be happy, to just let go once you know it is not meant to be, again - this is not easy. The metaphor of the strings describes the attachment of being in a relationship. We cut off the strings, but - we have to cut off our own string in order to completely let go and move on. IU describes it painfully beautiful.

IU is really an artist she can make people think so deep whether they are a common person or an artist too regardless if who you are she can make you realize things through her song and relate it to your own life. She basically just wrote about what she is going through with love, family, career and her feelings but it can touch your heart how honest those words are. Like when she wrote Graduation Day, Voicemail, Bad Day, 23, Pallet, 25 and the rest of her song it reflect who she is and what she felt in those years and situation she went through. I've been a fan for 7 years but she never fail to amaze me every-time i thought i already know everything about her. I'm looking forward on what she will do again. I don't like her to be pressured by the expectation of others for me as long as she stay true to herself and love what she does i will continue to support her no matter what will happen. IU will always be precious in my heart. She made me realize that music doesn't have boundaries.
