I did 6 years honorable service, and you are correct- it takes a different kind of person to do this. Not everyone is cut out for this type of dedication, life. Knowing we have the support of our people back home means the world to us. A very simple thing to just thank and care about us. We notice. We do it because we love you and our country. It's that simple.
OMG,..There is still someone, on you tube,..who Loves her country,..loves our ideals, and understands the plans our founding fathers had for this wonderful strip of land we are living on.. God Bless you..your "not the only one."
34+ years of Army service, still wearing the uniform. Like some of my fellow troops I've seen stuff I hope none of you will ever see. My Soldiers' lives are the most important thing to me, and some of them return home completely devastated and much worse. None of us glorify war or look forward to it. Please remember that the only two things the American Soldier wishes for is to be appreciated and for the country to live the life that earns the sacrifices made. Appreciate the reaction video.
I’m a former Army attack helicopter pilot with combat experience…thank you for your reaction! I can’t live up to every expectation, nor can anyone…we do our best…
RIP Toby. The sacrifices made by those who serve is humbling and frankly, overwhelming for me to think about. Eternal gratitude isn't enough. Thanks, Francesca, for sharing this with us.
Also to add to that Toby Keith and a couple other country singers were a giant motivator in me joint, Toby Keith probably is responsible for more people joint the military than anyone else
This song makes me tear up. My father and brother both retired from the Army. I had a great uncle serve in Vietnam and my grandfather served in the Navy... RIP Toby
I am a 67-year-old army veteran and I will give my life for my country everybody that lives in it freedom is not free and I am willing to pay the ultimate price for that freedom for the people that I love
God bless you and thank you for your service. I sincerely hope that those of us in the next generation of soldiers will be able to allow you all to rest easy someday ❤
Your reaction is true, genuine and heart-felt. My husband (I did not know him back then) enlisted into military service after HS in 1971 (18). He said he didn't have to enlist, his draft number (during the Vietnam War) was 341, but he says he felt obligated. His Dad was a Navy WWII Veteran and his oldest brother served 2 tours in Vietnam in the US Navy. All of us sign a "blank check" upon oath of enlistment payable by accepting unlimited personal sacrifice - whatever was asked. The only reason he says he left military service was an opportunity to go through the testing/hiring process for police officer in his hometown - which he did get. About 7 yrs after starting his civilian police career we met and were married. He took a 20 yr retirement in 1997. Very much appreciate the job you do.
Love this song. Toby was a great songwriter and singer. On a side note I spent a year at Comiso Sicily while in the service. The island was beautiful and the people were wonderful.
Imaging serving in the US Army, enlisting straight out of high school and deploying to Afghanistan before turning 19. He came and did an USO and MWR tour across Afghanistan and landed in Helmand Providence which was a Taliban stronghold through the US war there. He cared about the troops so much he faced the same things we did to bring us joy and happiness, as well as, a little bit of home to our troops while fighting. I was stationed at FOB Leatherneck where I got to watch him perform this song live in 2012. It was definitely a moral booster for us.
I am from a long line of US MARINES, my dad served 3 tours in Vietnam. His first tour was when Vietnam was classified as police actions in 60. At one time they only classified Vietnam war , from 68 to 75 as the war and from 58 to 68 were police actions, they have reclassified it now because there was just as much fight there , we just didn’t have a large ground force. My brother served in the marines from 84 to 91, I served from 86 to 92 marines, and our youngest brother served army for 4 years 89 to93
Was with the US Army First Armored Division Artillery. In Nurumberg West Germany from Apr. 1987 to Jul. 89. As a Matter today the 12 th marks 34 years. Since leaving West Germany. The Collapse of the Soviet Iron Curtain has Fallen. Mission accomplished.
I did 25 years wearing my country's uniform with two deployments in a war zone. While deployed every day is groundhog day. Remember to give thanks and honor the military families that have to carry on on their own while a loved one is deployed. My oath of office never expires
I, as a American veteran, appreciate those who serve and have served. Even those who cycle out for a other than dishonorable discharge take an oath that the individual never rescind's. That patriotism live's in their blood. Veteran's past present and future are proud to have had the opportunity to bear that cross, and will always carry that with them even after discharge for whatever reason other than dishonorable. We may not always agree with the reason's why but we still just do it. We love our country and the people in it and will always stand beside our brothers and sisters in arms to defend the rights and freedoms that men and women have so proudly died for. Thanks to Sir Toby Keith (RIP) for bringing the soldier's voice a bit more clarity.
None of us did it for the money, or glory. 22 Veterans a day die by their own hand. This country needs to take care of those who sacrificed everything, but got nothing upon return.
I am an old guy at 78 and life is a one way journeys . I was drafted in '69 Vietnams war by good old LBJ. He congratulated me on my choice to serve my country and signed the document that made it so. Good old LBJ. Now you must understand that your country may require you to return with your shield or on it ; however, the Military is much more realistic and only stipulates the new recruit to only serve his country. Fine distinction but legally interesting . My older brother was a marine in Korean war , I was a NG Paratrooper and SF of the 38th Alaskan Guard , all my children were Army and served in the sand box and my youngest my daughter is still flying BlackHawks for the Army WW3. I know the military , the good, the bad and the ugly. Have no illusions and it will be the event of you life.
This song strongly affects me. I was the kid. My dad served for 30 years in the US Airforce as a pilot. He went through WWII, Korea and Vietnam. I came along during Korea. What they dont show is what happens to the wife AFTER he deploys. My brother sister and I saw this firsthand. When mom found out my dad was deploying her two sisters would be there after we dropped him off. She would then completely loose it. sometimes my sister, brother and I wouldn't see her for a couple days and her sisters watched over us. She would just stay in her bedroom. During his career he was in three plane crashes. One during twin engine training, one during WWII when he hit a mountain at night in a shot up transport (mom got a telegram and he was in the hospital for a while after that one) and another one that he wouldn't tell us about. When he started hearing about another deployment that was coming, she finally couldn't contain it and had a nervous breakdown. He decided she had had enough and retired, and we moved back home.
This old vet loved your reaction to this song. This song always hits hard for me. There are very few songs that hit me like this one. Maybe FFDP, wrong side of heaven and gone away ( considering I exist under a VA homeless program for vets) thank you for your reactions.
Aussie combat vet l served in a rapid reaction regiment,24/7 standby 4hrs to be wheels up gone to places we never went to do things that were never done.never knew when the call would come & Yes l’d do it again without thinking 🇦🇺🇺🇸
Thank you for reacting to this song, I'm a US Army combat veteran. The war cost me a marriage during my 6 month deployment. After my divorce I volunteered to go back to Afghanistan and Iraq to serve for another 10 years as a Department of Defense employee. I'm retired now from 27 years of total service and still single 😊

Just stumbled on this reaction video. I’m glad you enjoyed it and understand the message that Toby Keith was conveying. Although not music videos, you might want to review two videos based upon the rescue of Jessica Buchanan. One video is by CBS News; Jessica provides some of the voiceover. The other video by Brothers in Arms tells the story from the vantage point of the Navy SEALs. Both videos highlight the selflessness of our military’s special operators.
I remember when I was 5 or 6 my Mom and I drove my Dad to the Navy base so he could get on board his submarine and little did I know at the time but he was headed for Vietnam service. I was old enough at the time to realize what that meant. My Dad was in the Navy for 20 years. My older brother was in the Army during the height of Vietnam but they wouldn't allow him to go over because of disciplinary violations. He actually did want to go to the war zone.
I missed Vietnam by five years. I lost a cousin there. I served in the Navy for 10 years. It was the deployments that were hardest. I always hated seeing all the women and children seeing off there deploying husbands. Military should only be for single people. There were too many of those wives that would hit the bars after the ship hit the breakwater. I married another sailor and she and I seem to keep passing and never were together. So much for marriage and have not been in a relationship in over 30 years. I have fond memories of the Navy. Things like building schools in the Philippines and providing text books to schools. Providing food. So much good our military men provide in foreign countries. It's not all about war.
So being 100% honest I wanted to join as soon as 9-11 happened I was still too young, and a few years later 2007 I finally joined the marines, American pride was the main reason, as for a lot of marines also getting out of this small town before I needed up in prison was a huge motivator lol
Sometimes I wish we could go back to when people wrote letters to each other. I really miss writing a pen pal in school, we wrote to people a few states over and I just remember how nice it was to see how she would decorate the letter and waiting for a week for something made me really focus on what she had to say. Kids today miss out on that and it’s a shame. They have no patience at all. If they had to wait a week for a reply they would totally forget about it. I’m 36 now and I’m not sure if anyone still writes friends but I wish I could find a nice woman who enjoys writing letters or maybe like a email pen pal would be neat. I dunno why I wrote that im sure most people don’t like writing letters to a stranger just to be friends, but I dunno maybe I’ll find one some day.

Very rarely do men join the Service because it's just something to do. Men are born to protect and they do this. It's called toxic masculinity these days. We've not been through a World War in our time so true men have never been needed like this. When tough times come, men will shine and protect us.

Oh, please have comfort in knowing there are over 16 million living veterans and most I feel believe in the Oath that never dies.
I’m a 70% permanently disabled veteran and served 25 years of my 56 years of life. From 1986-2011 and I miss it still today

The men in my family served, dating to the 1700s. I was more than happy to serve. The Reagan era was an interesting era to serve, and got wounded.

It was also hard for a sailor in the US Navy to say goodbye to their love ones when they are deployed aboard ship.
