Tony explains with unmistakable clarity that his criticisms are based on the reality that this car is a low-quality clone precisely because it doesn't accurately recreate the features of the car it's attempting to clone. How is that controversial?
This is not so much a clone, or a tribute: It's a specious car. It doesn't even do a good job PRETENDING to be what it's purported to be. You'll be the laughingstock of any Mopar meet up; and for the money the dealer is asking you can actually buy a GOOD car.
@@dwaynedonnelly i would say on todays prices it is worth 32,000 i just seen a 70 high boy go for 185,000 with the 360 in it and it was not a ranger but then again i get rigs dirt cheap
@@MrJeffcoley1😂😂😂 You people are morons. It’s not purported to be anything other than a 69 Coronet 318! That’s literally how it is advertised! It can be whatever color they want or have whatever decals they want, but no one, other than Phony, is saying it’s a Super Bee or Super Bee clone! 😂
This car is the poster child to what has ruined the hobby. I have never been a guy with much money. But I used to have so much fun buying, playing with for a few months. Then selling for a few bucks more. My late 60s early 70s cars. Jeez. I almost bought from a buddy of mine. A running in nice survivor condition 68 Bee. He wanted $3800. And it was REAL. It was also 1993. Now. The prices are so jacked up. Total garbage that should be just parts cars are going for 10s of thousands of dollars. I can't even get back into playing with the old cars. Because of this. I miss it so much. I am so glad that these videos are getting made. It's a service that needs to be done. We need these auctions houses and dealers out of business, and it is brought back to the guys in their garages. Just having fun with their buddies. But that will never be. You just can't put the POOP back into the cow.
Thanks, Uncle Tony, this was a fun video - clearly you enjoyed nerding out on all the little details of 1968 Super Bees, and I got a kick out of watching you and learning new things. Please don't be mad at me when I roll up to the meet with '71 GTX machine gun exhaust tips on my Nissan!
@@drippinglass I don't know, I don't mess with Mopar. I like watching UTG. I also agree with getting a clone so you can enjoy it, not sweat the numbers matching crap. I've got an engine swapped Probe GT, the new engine doesn't even have numbers since Japan didn't have VIN in Japan. The engine is 29-30 years old, I shift at 7k. Sub 6 - 60, NA. I had a third gen Camaro that I sweated every detail, and it continually had problems, I just could not enjoy it, 8 seconds to 60 with a v8. Mustang GT 5 speed, also slow. I dig the 5.0 for the sound and fury. Something older would weigh less than these newer Pony cars.
Whenever I see stuff like this it makes me glad to have a preference for the lowest trim level, least fancy version that the same parts will bolt onto.
Hey MH…Hope that Malibu is coming along. Had a 75 Monte Carlo when I was your age…Old metal real estate sign, pop riveted in, for a passenger side floorboard…😂 Loved that car! 😎
From Leo: I agree, the car is a less than $10,000 drive in cruiser. A lot of fixed up / clone / modified cars can be fun to own, and fun to drive. They are usually significantly cheaper than a true numbers matching, all original collector worthy car. Those all original correct cars are usually in some rich guys collection and driven very little, if at all. Back in high school even slant 6 Darts had mags, stick on stripes that said GT and a Mr. Norm's Grand Spaulding Dodge license plate frame. It really did not hurt anyone.
As soon as the people at the top decided cars were investment items with an expected return it all went down hill. If there’s a buck yo be made there’s a sucker to sell to. There are good builders but these less than ideal cars are very common
With that terrible run in the paint and the extreme orange peel next to it I have to wonder what's hiding under the paint. You can see this was just slammed together. You're right about the investment people, same thing happened to Harley Davidson when suburbanites with unlimited credit cards wanted to play biker. The average joe can't afford one now.
Maple motors in Tennessee, I laughed at the video of that car. The new gimmick with some dealers is saying believed to be original miles and calling the car a clone once at the beginning of a video like a Roadrunner clone Satellite. Then just drop the clone and call it a Roadrunner for the entire video. You got it right Tony there is a lot of misrepresentation out there right now.
i thought that was one from there they are so full of crap sold a clone chevelle and they sold it as a real ss396 to someone i know he sued them and they still insist it was real after he brought the guy in who built the car ! they still havnt paid up
I bet $100 it's got a 2.7 open rearend. Did you notice the broken windshield? And the way the rear bumper is slightly bent above the license plate? Where I grew up, bad stuff happens to people who take advantage of others this way
@@sparkywirenut That's not entirely true. I got my 318 Volare with a 2.73 to where it would one wheel squeel from a dead stop with no internal work. Then I broke that rear and put a 3.23 suregrip in and no chance even on sandy pavement. 🤣
@@sparkywirenut It was probably a 7 1/4 rear. I’ve done it twice, once was an 83 Cordoba ( the first car I paid for) the second was a 77 Diplomat, both cars were 318’s and I replaced the rear ends with 8 1/4 rears. This was a little over thirty years ago. The big surprise was the Cordoba, it went from 2.24 gears to 2.71’s made a huge difference.
I feel people can do what they want with there money and there “flipper” cars as long as the seller is honest and discloses 💯 % with the person of interest. It’s such a sensitive / muddy water subject. A wise man once said build anything race everything …… IMO if a novice buyer is looking to get into this hobby maybe a MOPAR purist can approach a car like this and point out the “faults” and simply say to him or her this is a great car to have fun with to drive on the weekends and to enjoy if they aren’t worried about period correct things like hubcaps , paint , tire air pressure etc . Great video uncle Tony . DD Speed shop just uploaded a great video on this subject too . Cheers 🇨🇦
As long as you don’t misrepresent it as something it isn’t, there is nothing wrong with “cloning” cars- it’s been done for decades now. Hot rodding is putting your car together how you want- just don’t misrepresent it when trying to sell it, etc…
The problem is sooner or later someone will misrepresent it. What's the sad part is there is nothing wrong with having a base model Coronet with the money being spent on the important like the engine, suspension, brakes, etc. In all honesty I would pay more for a nice clean base model than a nicely done clone.
@@mattskustomkreations ...100% true but its not even the flashiest! Its the name! Not even the performance of the car! It had all the power in the world, never touched and stock, lit the tires up form a 20 mph roll was tight and reliable. I tried selling it but nobody wanted it,if they did they said well its not a Road Runner or GTX so they low balled me...The car had buckets, console,pw top trim level etc..Even has a/c and it works! I at the same time had a bondo buggy (nice paint but lots of bondo)oil burning 68 Road Runner that couldnt beat a 318 2bbl because it was running on 6 of the 8 cyl...But I sold that for the same price I was asking for the 69 Sport Satellite! I sold that Road Runner for pretty good money/ wasn't cheap and always full disclosure of issues I know of! I wanted to sell the Satellite to fund the Road Runners rebuild of engine and bodywork, interior was real nice though. I still have the 69 Sport Satellite today and its still near perfect! Never abused I am the 3rd owner, will never sell it..I am glad those idiots didnt want it because it wasnt a GTX or Road Runner lol...Its all the name..So glad I kept that car I at the time I was going to sell it,knew I would miss it and probably wouldnt find another like it..I did years later.being a 70 GTX that was in equal shape but nonetheless. Thats why Chevy guys slap SS badges on every Chevy Nova or Chevelle they get their hands on! Pontiac guys slap Trans Am on every Firebird and JUDGE on every GTO..Sportier to most is better..Not to me though but oh well.. Ford guys guilty too,I bought a 70 Mustang Grande with a 302 2bbl single exhaust! But with BOSS 302 stickers on the side and all over the engine and rear deck..My buddy repainted the car leaving the badges, stickers off..I did add a 4bbl,duel exhaust as spending $500 turns to $3500 when selling added value, plus just better..Oddly, we seen the car at a car show with BOSS 302 air cleaner and side stripes, unreal!! It was the same car, headliner give away and a body imperfection under the rear bumper, plus I keep all the vin numbers of cars I owned/sold.It was so odd the new owner did nearly what the other owner did,we were dumbfounded! Car needed paint and decals removed as it had dents/dings all over it.
I remember one "classic" car dealer back in the 80's telling me about a customer asking about his guarantee. He told him "that car is guaranteed to drive off of my property." It did, but died in the street.
Cracked glass, bad weatherstripping, rusted bumpers, runny paint....imagine what the underbody and engine internals are like. If the seller was really just trying to sell this an honest '68 Coronet, they could have done some basic repairs and sold it as such. But they did this instead, and are trying to get $32K for a really questionable car.
Holy exhaust Batman! You're bringing back all my high school memories. (87) My buddies had A 70 Roadrunner, a 69 Super Bee, and a Coronet among others! The Super Bee had a 426 with a Holly 750 double pumper, and you could watch the fuel gauge go down accelerating up hills! Gas was about $1.10/gal. Damn, I'm old.
I remember when I was going to Arizona Auto Ints back in 75 and 76 there was an Atlantic Rich Field station on Glendale ave before Arco had leaded 94 Octane Premium for 58 9/10 damn that shit smelled good and it ran really good in my GTO so dont talk to me bout feeling old hahahaha
Tony, like I said in my other comment and will add here. I was 16 in 1969 and involved with a "team" that raced Mopars. I learned, then raced. I was blessed with a technical brain that only had to be showed how to do anything on the cars ONCE...............Having said all that,if your shop was near me that's where this 69 year old retired car guy would be all day..........All the best to you, Tony, and THANK YOU for these GREAT videos !
The next owner should print out a decal of a dolphin, along with "Flipper Bee" in the same print as the original Super Bee and then glue it onto that lemon of his
And then charging SRT8 prices. The seller can say all they want about how they represent the car....their asking price says otherwise. If they sold it as an honest Coronet with a manual swap they'd make money. But for some reason they've tried to upbadge it, and that reason is to dupe someone who doesn't know better into paying way more than what it's worth. As presented, I wouldn't touch that car for half the ask, because as presented it's likely a dolled up POS.
Right, but not exactly; a mildly modified 220 CID V6 Pentastar Challenger / Charger will easily outrun the 289 302 V8 Mustangs and the power glide Cameros and Firebirds of the 60s and 70s, except for some of the HP big blocks. The zero-60 times on a pentastar are less than 6 seconds with a chip, cold air intake and BBK throttle body. Only a few of the oem 60s & 70s muscle cars could do a sub 6 second 0-60. Pentastar is a damn good engine - better in fact than the 350, 377 and 392 Chrysler hemi designs because they don't have the windage oil starvation problem destroying cams and lifters. Over 10 million made so far.
@@theAreaMan They claim on their video they marked it up $3K over what they paid...well, if they paid $29K for this, makes you wonder how smart they are about old cars themselves, as a vintage car specialist?...

i am a mopar collector having 7 A-body 68-69 Barracudas. i grew up with old mopar muscle cars having graduated from high school in 1972. i see "mistake" mopars advertised all the time on Ebay and Facebook Marketplace and other internet sites. Every time i mention the mistakes in a comment, i get all kind of "hate" response with people saying "if you don't like the car just shut the ...... up!" well, OK. i always respond to this kind of hate by saying that "someone" who KNOWS these cars needs to point out mistakes and false information for the younger buyers or enthusiasts who don't know the cars and would not recognize a mistake or misstatement. i don't think it is "hate" to point out "inaccuracies" in old muscle cars if one does it "politely." yes, a person can buy any car they like whether it is correct or not. but i think it is valuable for "old guys" who know these cars - like "Uncle Tony" to point out obvious "issues."
$32,000 is a REAL GOOD reason for pointing out the dealership whose knowingly ripping off the person who buys it. Perhaps it would motivate them to wiggle on that price. The dealership name is on the rear bumper.
A old body man once told me if you want to hide a bunch of body work, paint it white or yellow. This high impact sublime definitely falls into that same category. You are not wrong in any of your comments on this car. Even a shade tree mechanic like me knows to change the steering column when you put in a manual transmission. 🤣 Marty G
Tony, you are spot on. Anyone who buys this car doesn't know a thing about vintage automobiles. They just have to have it, don't care about price, thinking they got the real deal. Only after they have it and figure out what the heck it really is do they realize, this thing is a real joke. All of Maple Motors car are cobbled up, "Pops" the owner has been soaking people for years. As their saying goes.........."It's time to go for a ride"!!!!!!
Nothing screams dream car like smashing the dash with the shifter, crusty rusty bumpers, and a basic 318 under the hood while pretending you have a 383.
Sure people do that for themselves. That's a bit different than trying to pass a car off as something it isn't and do a piss poor job at it, to sell to some unsuspecting person- which is the whole point of this video. More likely it was cobbled together with what they could find... and find cheaply. If you weren't really in the know and somebody sold you a Charger Daytona, that was a 72 with a slant six in it- you'd be mad. I'd have more respect for the flipper if instead of trying to pass it off as what it ain't, he made it some fake ass satire trim. Or just sold it as a 318 Coronet. If I bought that car for the 6k it should be selling for; that's what I would do. Pull the 383 and bee badges off, and call it the 318 Jammer or something, with a fake funny backstory.
@@ItsDaJax I like the way it looks if it wasn't for the 383 emblem and doing a horrible job trying to be a clone. I think it has potential to be a cool Frankenstein build.
Buyer Beware are the two words you need to keep in the forefront of your mind when looking to purchase a car like this. There are way too many unscrupulous people out there willing to part you from your money, particular when it comes to cars. If you don't know much about cars find someone who does, particularly about the brand and model you're looking to buy. Go to the car meets and talk to the owners of the cars. Tell them you're looking at buying and want some advice. They'll be more than willing to help you or point to who can. Like you Tony I'm a Mopar fanatic and have been since I was 12 yrs old. I've built several clones and sold them as such but they were done right. The Mopar clan is a very tight snd protective group and won't steer anyone wrong looking for help. Imagine trying to sell this car as a Superbee but with a 318 in it? That was the ultimate salt in the wound. You can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig. 😁
Without knowing the structural integrity I wouldn’t call this a flipper car just because this is exactly how my cougar is built besides the wrong engine call out. I built my car to be cool so I’ll paint it whatever color I want, do the interior on a budget, put 70 eliminator stripes on a 69, put in pinto bucket seats, delete chrome that I can’t afford, and add the entire eliminator body kit. I’m sure a dealer selling my car would call it a eliminator clone. Other than the wrong engine call out, I really don’t see anything wrong with the car unless the price was equivalent to a nice accurate clone/being represented as such (edit just saw the end of the video price is insane). I doubt a flipper would manual swap it so I think this was just someone’s hot rod. Fun bright color, cool hood, stripes, bucket seats and a 4 speed, sounds like a great car to me
Well done Uncle Tony , I personally spotted the ' Blobby ' rear BS on the first seeing , from a KIWI in Australia that has seen this bad shirt here as well . My 1971 E37 R/T Charger cost me a Box of beer in 1989 in NZ , sat under a tree for 15 years , I spent 5 years rebuilding it without the internet . When I moved to Australia in 2000 she was worth 60k ,, now in 2023 ,,, E37's , E38's ( 3 speed Borg Warner's ) go for 200k ?? , yes the flippers are a cancer !' FFs Uncle , E48's , E49's ( 4 speed Borg Warner ) are touching 500k !
In the pictures of the trunk floor on their website you can see the floor was pitted to hell before being painted and the rust is freshly bleeding through the fresh paint again already. I can only imagine the state of the rest of the body under all that bondo or as we call it in nz, "bog".
I’m building what some might call a clone… or a fake. It’s a ‘68 Satellite that I’m “GTXing”. But I’m a hot rodder. So it’s going to be the color I painted it back in ‘88, satin black. I also like the Satellite trim that runs the length of the car on top of the fenders doors and quarters. I may paint it the same or a contrasting color. I’m also not going to put the fake wood grain on the dash… although I do have a 150 MPH speedo and factory tach. Oh well. I’m sure I’ll hear what isn’t correct. 😀 I do respect the guys that are purists, and do OEM restos. But I’ve always been the guy that used what parts I could find that worked.
Screw the purists. The majority of old classics arent original anymore unless theyve paid high dollars to become a garage queen that wouldnt be worth driving in that rare original condition anyway. Custom cars are the norm in hot rodding.
@@tabbott429The funny thing is… the first letter in the VIN is an “R” for Belvedere. The second letter is for “price class”, not model. So from the get go the factory was admitting that is was just trim levels. And yeah, the Belvedere was only available in 2 door form as a coupe. The road runner was coupe and hardtop. Satellite, Sport Satellite, GTX… hardtop only. They were all the same body coming down the assembly line. In fact the coupe just had the post welded in. But at the end of the day, as much as I like my Mopars… I wish I had just bought ‘55-‘57 Chevys. You can do whatever you want with them and no one says it isn’t “correct”. 😑😁
Thanks Uncle Tony. I too have a mixed up Mopar. I bought this 1970 Dodge Challenger 318 and. 904 trans. 7 1/4 rear end. From my Sister. It belonged to my Brother in law who passed away due to cancer. Nice car. Brown with a black vinyl top. Column shift. I bought it in 1979. Over the years I have modified it quite a lot. It is now BW7 white. Rallye hood and 17” Rallye wheels all around. 340 modified quite extensively. Headers and air gap intake. Dual exhaust and crime tips. 8 3/4 4:10 gears. Black interior. Console steering column and a ratchet floor shifter. It looks just like Kowalski’s Vanishing point Challenger. Has the R/T emblems all around. I am glad I didn’t add the 440 engine because the 340 gets better gas mileage. I believe it’s 14 or 15 mpg. I know this because I also own a real 1970 GTX. 440-6. And I might get 9 mpg in it😂. I agree that it should always be presented for what it is. I don’t fault the dealership for selling it. I just don’t know why the price is so high for what it is. That is the shady part. No excuse for that. But I take my Challenger to many car cruise ins and most folks don’t know that you cannot get a 340 in a 70 Challenger R/T. So I try to educate them on engine availability for those cars. Thanks and enjoy these hot days while you can.
I am familiar with the dealership who is selling this car and in their defense they are not trying to say it's a genuine Super Bee, but I totally agree with you, they are a dealership and all people see is the shiny paint!, I watch most of their videos and when the car has bubbles under the paint?, run, don't walk! 40 large out the door is way too much for this car, but some uninformed person has probably if I'm not mistaken bought it!☹️☹️☹️
These types of auto dealers typically have an offsite crew that reworks the car purchased by the dealer and they just paint it, and makes a few inexpensive additions like rims, hubcaps.
I agree with Unkle Tony, I'd probably buy it for 6k, but they'd hafta replace the 383 Superbee badges with 318 Housefly ones, call it the sweatbee, idc, it's not a superbee.
He’s right about the color, although sublime is one of my favorite colors, but my first glance was that it wasn’t even a Super Bee to begin with due to it being a hard top and not a post with the wing out rear windows. This guy knows his stuff
That does not matter. The most important is the human aspect of this meeting. I think that all the people watching this, Mopar fans or overall muscle cars fans are celebrating great atmosphere which has been brought to this. Thank you both uncle Tony and Jamie for bringing warm to our hearths. Jamie great honor to you for travelling so far. Enjoy Mopars, enjoy life, be happy, enjoy everything... 😊
All these 60s/70s cars advertised/polished as in such "perfect condition" remind me of my late Dad's comment about all the antique stores up in the New England area. My Dad noted that if all those items being sold in all these antique stores were actually original, then all those people from that era ever did was sit around building those things day in and day out (rocking chairs, butter churns, etc., etc.). Glad UTG that you're shedding a light on this so at least some people won't get cheated.
Tony, you described this car just like I would describe a bad 1970 Chevelle SS clone. You know your cars inside and out, I feel the same way about GM cars. :) Keep up the great work!
Except the car was never advertised as a Super Bee or Super Bee clone. It is advertised as a Coronet 318. Only morons like you and Tony are conflating the two.
I have a 1969 Coronet R/T. Great video because I understand why this car bothers you, and I have no idea what my car is worth, so I appreciate your assessment of the value of that SubLime monstrosity.
I just hope someone can put it right. It's not a bad body style. What is bad is everything that has been done to it. The motor is probably the most honest thing about it. I'll throw the rims in the honest category too. But the paint is probably hiding a ton of Bondo, and let's not get into the potential electrical demons. At least it doesn't have the 1970 'cuda go wing on it. Or chin spoiler.
@@imperialmotoring3789 if they just take the emblems off, and fix the steering column, that would be a good thing. The body may need a lot of work under the paint though. If they make sure it's good, then the car can be made right.
Whoever buys this car should get together with the owner of the "Black Ghost" and go to car shows and see who gets laughed at the most. Now that would be some funny stuff to see.
Reminds me of that "white ghost" character in the animated film about a racing snail. Sorry I can't remember the name of the movie. It's from when my daughter was about 10 years old.
Well this 68 Coronet really is a toilet not worth $5Gs in my opinion. The black hemi Challenger 'legend' on the other hand was misrepresented apparently but still a valuable original car.
@@robwilliams1951 yeah that movie... Thanks man. I was secretly going crazy trying to remember the name. The white snail would speak then slowly back into a dark covering.
@@robwilliams1951 I think it's funny referencing that movie with the so called "black ghost" Challenger, and I'm from Detroit! My '70 442 would have walked all over that stock hemi car on the street or track. My olds ran an 11.28 @ 119 last time out. With m/t et streets and tailpipes, albeit 3 inch pipes. That hemi car with a gear banger driving like he stole it could maybe run a 13.10@110
One thing about relative degrees of 'purism' is, I'll mix and match parts and if I ever have the budget *paint* across models and years, by a little ways at least, but I couldn't *abide* deceptive badging. (If it's not a Superbee, even if it was a more faithful clone, I wouldn't feel right about the Superbee badging. (Also I don't care much for Superbees and garish colors, so I'd rather have a 318 Coronet with a 4-speed in almost whatever color that was born with anyway, or one *i'd* choose. Then maybe hop it up from there. ) (When I put a 4-speed in my Duster it was such a happy bonus that the donor car came with the proper steering column and a near-perfect Tuff Wheel, but I was actually kind of expecting to live with the superfluous Prindl indicator in the interval between buying the donor car and actually going to get it and bring it home.) (And there was a spare Hurst shifter and among the selection of levers in the trunk was the one that would let me shift well with the split bench forwarder than the seller had needed it.) Anyway, if I were undertaking a project like that, I'd be thankful to consult you, but might not obey. But I really don't like the idea of 'faking a more valuable model.' If it's like, 'I would like a car that looks like that,' I think it's fair game if I'm not *lying* if I make it kinda . :) (And I don't generally want to imitate things by rote anyway.)
The WH in the VIN tells me that it's a Coronet 500? Great stainless/pot-metal trim on the 500s, it would have been nicer if it had been restored back to original.
Tony, your insights are incredibly valuable. You’re providing an immensely important point of view that so many of us that love cars, really need. You should seriously make yourself available for in person consultations when someone is serious about buying a car. If I was about to drop 50k on a car, and needed answers, I’d gladly pay your travel expenses, and all of the fees involved. Even if it didn’t go my way. Saving someone from making a catastrophic financial mistake has a lot of value. Lose 50k vs. spending 3k to be told “no, this car is a dumpster fire,” would be worth it, to me. You’re seriously one of my favorite UA-cam subscriptions. You know your stuff, and I admire & respect that. ❤️
Same 5-6K. Had a '67 Coronet 500 RT, and a '68 Hemi Charger RT (minus the Hemi) 40 years ago. Paid $1500 for the '68, and $1000 for the '67. Both had 440 Magnums. Later I bought a 2007 Superbee, and then a 2009 Challenger SRT8. Those were too expensive to maintain, and drive hard. Now I'm finishing up a 1965 Sunbeam Tiger. A real one that has a non-stock Boss 302 crate motor from Ford, and I painted it a custom "Tiger orange" instead of the correct Mediterranean Blue. I left the sixties, or seventies race mods on the car including tasteful flares, and a weird hood bubble with its openings towards the rear. I crated up the original front crossmember, and installed a very expensive race crossmember, and huge Wilwoods all around but again saved every single stock piece after restoring each item. I did a top to bottom restoration on it, and gathered every stock part except the original motor. I will not damage anything but will assemble it the way I want to, and actually drive it. I live in the mountains above LA where there is lots of nice terrain to drive.
Hell, the clown brothers should have taken this thing to the next level and put a SLANT SIX in it and cut the Super part out of the Super bee decal (just calling it a Bee,lol). And I thought putting a SS emblem on a 4-door Malibu was cheezy....these guys got me beat! "So y'all, do you think the horn works?"
I don't think anyone doesn't know these guys, a solid family run and owned business. I think the conotation that this is a "scam" is a hard sell. The classic car market is notoriously high dollar right now, and they are probobly just getting their return on this still quite desirable coronet. If it's not perfect out of the box you can't tar and feather the dealer for not putting a small fortune to get it restored. Not every car needs to be factory finished regardless, the last owner more than likely just took the elements that they enjoyed to build a car they would enjoy looking at. Thanks for the video, I do enjoy hearing the little details about these cars, and your insight is appreciated sir, let's just be resonable in regards to these cars and those selling them.
The devil is in the details. My cousin loves a-bodies, especially 68-70s. I looked at Dart GTS 340 with him once...what a shock. It looked great, but there was SO much wrong.
Tony, not a Flipper. A Flopper. That's what we called this sort of quick turn car and the Paper Tigers like the Cougar Convertible that Kiwi recently brought in. Caveat Emptor.
Well, I think Tony was giving it the benefit of doubt that mechanically it is solid and only going off the pictures. If the mechanics match the stuff we see in the pics, I might go lower than $3,500, but that is speculation.
I don't often disagree with Uncle Tony, but this time I do. Back in the 1980's Mopar enthusiasts would scour the local junkyards to find Super Bee or Road Runner hoods and put them on the more mundane variants. I went to high school with a guy who had a Road Runner hood on his 318 Satellite, (it had a 4bbl, headers and nitrous). I just don't see anything wrong with putting those parts on the car. Nobody is claiming it's a Super Bee, the seller isn't even claiming it's a clone, it's being sold as a 68' Coronet. Lighten up Tony. Stressing over this kind of stuff isn't worth it.
Super knowledge here! However, it would have been nice to edit in pictures of each highlighted feature with a picture of the correct comparison . hard to imagine entrely what you are pointing out. Still, great knowledge and info. Thanx!
I guessed 40 grand within the first 5 minutes. Whoever buys this car will drive it until it quits running then it will sit in the garage and collect dust because they won't know how to fix it.
That kind of car is still pretty cool, resto-mod janky kinda thing, as long as the seller is not trying to pass it off as original to unsuspecting buyers. But they should have just went with Coronet badges.
Posers are a joke. I'm with you, just leave it as a Coronet. It's fine just that way. The fakery just speaks to the mindset of the builder/former owner. Stay away from those unless you get them cheap.
@@LongIslandMopars I got my 318 Volare for $500 running and driving. Among other repairs over the years it has $500 in LED headlights in it. But it doesn't matter how much I've spent on it, it's still only worth $2,000 to $3,000. If I added up everything I would probably take it to this same dealership and ask for the same kind of money except that I'm not insane. Cars are not an investment, they eat money, burn money, and fart out credit card bills. The big money comes in to this game when childish people are desperate to get back to that childhood. How much you wanna bet I can throw a football over that mountain?
The price sure doesn't reflect all that jankiness, at least not to me...the cracked windshield and the old penny stuck on the dash speaki of cutting corners and not caring...wonder what else lurks beneath?...
I love all the overspray on everything that isn't green. Guess they ran out of masking tape from the wifes kitchen drawer. I'd hate to be the owner taking it to my first cruise-in
LOL! I especially like when there's body color overspray on the TIRES. I would guess that at least this car isn't bad enough to have paint on the tires, given that it's $33k, but who knows.
The key is finding the _right_ place to show it off. Try a daycare center, a home for developmentally challenged kids, a nursing home, etc. A car show or a Mopar club rally? _"Fuh-GED-abod-it!"_
This is why I never tried to turn any of my Miradas into CMXs- because I've never seen a CMX up close, and I don't know what they came with, so I don't wish to get called out for a ton of wrong things.
As always great attention to detail .I would have just fixed up the coronet.there getting just as hard to find as the super bees maybe just threw a bee hood on it .for looks
Nice PSA! Actually, the bee on the wheels emblems used on this clown car would have been from a rear finish panel. The rear ones are flat on the backside. The ones from the leading edge of a 70 hood are contoured to fit the shape of the "beak" that you mentioned. I know, because I owned one...a tribute that is!
The run in the paint tells me this thing is stuck together with chickenshit welds and globs of bondo everywhere. And $32.9K asking price is just hilarious. I wouldn't give them $5k.
You say you are purist but I say your are very knowledgeable expert and all your videos are pure gold. I love classic cars, Americans and Europeans, but gave up long ago to buy one because of the amount of scammers out there. I think is not worth the cost. There is a difference between a restoration and a restification. A restoration goes back to how it came out of the factory, originally. A restificaion, you have slack in what you do. A big block in a small block chassis is one example.
Big block into small block sounds Stupid WHY would anyone do that? It’s not made to happen!! IT presents all kinds of problem. Need expensive motor mounts, or make your own. Need to make sure it’s level, and the transmission mount fits in the general area it started out at. Need to buy a really expensive oil pan or cut up your stock one, but depending on fab skill level, welding an oil pan with out leaks is hard! The. There the driveshaft! And the front suspension designed to hold up the weight of the small block and is now sagging under the big block.. 🤣🤣🤣 ask me how I Know!!?!? The “stupid line” was sarcasm for those who missed. Yes, and for $32K they couldn't even spring for a new windshield...and if they had done a new windshield, would have been a good opportunity to clean out those old gummed up pennies and vintage 1970's-80's wasp exoskeletons from the inaccessible dash corners...
That is nuts pricing for a car that's a clone(and not a very good one). You see this kind of fraud with anything that's collectable and not just cars. Great video Uncle Tony.
I think what Tony is looking at is what a shame it is to hack up a car like this, and even though they might not be trying to pass it off as genuine, somebody who doesn't understand what's involved may buy it and end up stuck with it and asking that kind of money that's the bad part, no way this can be good
$32,000 and it still has a cracked windshield, and an old penny stuck on the dash nobody bothered to remove?..so I guess it's really $31,999.99...unreal....
Yeah that's called Caveat Emptor. Buyer beware. Who the hell buys something like this and doesn't either educate themselves a bit beforehand (if they don't know already) or just pay someone who knows better to inspect it for them???
Yep they are smoking some really bad stuff 32k for a badly done clone that's only worth 6k. What's crazy is they think it's nice I would get so mad at shows when people would sit and want to argue with me about there malibu being a big block factory chevelle SS when it was a Malibu 307 column shift car. It would drive me nuts I had a really odd opinion 69 Malibu it came with a 307 console 4 speed 12 bolt non posi rear big block hood but no other ss trim people would say oh it was a big block car and the blew the engine and they stuck a small block in it and then they would say the reason it never had the SS396 badges on the fenders was because it was wrecked and they just put those fenders on it. The car was ordered that way because the guy had a L88 427 out of his brother's totaled out corvette that they planed on putting in it and were going to race it . But they put it in a 67 camaro instead. Oh and another crazy option it had was a under dash swing out tissue dispenser. Why would you put that in a car that you ordered a certain way to build a race car with? I'm guessing he always had a runny nose....lol
There are always buyers who don't actually care if the car is embarrassing. In high school I had an 18 year old friend who's parents bought him a classic mustang that was nothing but bondo but looked good. I thought they were fools for wasting their money. In less than a year he wrapped it around a lamp post while doing donuts in a mall parking lot. It turned out his parents may have properly thought this through. Where I live you're not getting a parts car for $6000.
Tony explains with unmistakable clarity that his criticisms are based on the reality that this car is a low-quality clone precisely because it doesn't accurately recreate the features of the car it's attempting to clone. How is that controversial?
So why even bring up the dealership that's selling it?
This is not so much a clone, or a tribute: It's a specious car. It doesn't even do a good job PRETENDING to be what it's purported to be. You'll be the laughingstock of any Mopar meet up; and for the money the dealer is asking you can actually buy a GOOD car.
The seller said it was not a real super bee n it was the previous owner who put that on the car
@@dwaynedonnelly i would say on todays prices it is worth 32,000 i just seen a 70 high boy go for 185,000 with the 360 in it and it was not a ranger but then again i get rigs dirt cheap

I feel people can do what they want with there money and there “flipper” cars as long as the seller is honest and discloses 💯 % with the person of interest.
Sure people do that for themselves. I'd have more respect for the flipper if instead of trying to pass it off as what it ain't, he made it some fake ass satire trim. Or just sold it as a 318 Coronet.
When I moved to Australia in 2000 she was worth 60k ,, now in 2023 ,,, E37's , E38's ( 3 speed Borg Warner's ) go for 200k ?? , yes the flippers are a cancer !'
FFs Uncle , E48's , E49's ( 4 speed Borg Warner ) are touching 500k !
In the pictures of the trunk floor on their website you can see the floor was pitted to hell before being painted and the rust is freshly bleeding through the fresh paint again already. I can only imagine the state of the rest of the body under all that bondo or as we call it in nz, "bog".
I thought bog was what you call a stinking oozing swamp. Like in Labyrinth.
I like that they color matched the tail light wiring. They really went all out on this car.
@@borisjankovici662Painting the wires to match the car is really going the extra mile 😂

@@justincooper5189 I agree. Put the correct hood on it, and paint it a normal color with no "Super Bee" emblems. A 318 is fine!
@@imperialmotoring3789 if they just take the emblems off, and fix the steering column, that would be a good thing. The body may need a lot of work under the paint though. If they make sure it's good, then the car can be made right.

Glad this channel exists. True Mopar professors are getting few and far between.
Then maybe hop it up from there. )
(When I put a 4-speed in my Duster it was such a happy bonus that the donor car came with the proper steering column and a near-perfect Tuff Wheel, but I was actually kind of expecting to live with the superfluous Prindl indicator in the interval between buying the donor car and actually going to get it and bring it home.) (And there was a spare Hurst shifter and among the selection of levers in the trunk was the one that would let me shift well with the split bench forwarder than the seller had needed it.)
Anyway, if I were undertaking a project like that, I'd be thankful to consult you, but might not obey. But I really don't like the idea of 'faking a more valuable model.' If it's like, 'I would like a car that looks like that,' I think it's fair game if I'm not *lying* if I make it kinda . :) (And I don't generally want to imitate things by rote anyway.)
I'm with you on the clone thing. I'd slap some 318 Housefly badges or something on there just for the laughs. 318 Honeybee
You saved a lot of money off of the price by showing how many restoration-caused repairs that this car needs --> Right Off The LOT !
The WH in the VIN tells me that it's a Coronet 500? Great stainless/pot-metal trim on the 500s, it would have been nicer if it had been restored back to original.
WH = 'Coronet 440'
68 Coronet 500's are awesome. I agree that would have been a better restoration.
Not a chance in hell, its still taped up!
That’s right a Bee with a “Buzzin’ Half Dozen”!!!!
It looked great, but there was SO much wrong.
thanks for being a pureist
Tony, not a Flipper. A Flopper. That's what we called this sort of quick turn car and the Paper Tigers like the Cougar Convertible that Kiwi recently brought in. Caveat Emptor.
SIX THOUSAND BUCKS? You're stoopid generous, Tony. That's a 3500 dollar car, and I absolutely love 318s.
I was thinking 3 at the most myself. Assuming it can be driven.

Posers are a joke. I'm with you, just leave it as a Coronet. It's fine just that way. The fakery just speaks to the mindset of the builder/former owner. Stay away from those unless you get them cheap.
