XJ6 Champ Car: XJ40 AJ6 Cylinder Head Gasket Replacement-Part 1

  • A common problem with the Jaguar AJ6 engine is blown head gaskets. To do a cylinder head gasket replacement on the XJ40 Aj6 engine is not a difficult job for someone who has the ability to read directions in a manual and to watch this video of the job being done on a engine test stand. It's great to have the job done on an engine which is out in the open free from all of the under hood clutter. I hope you find it helpful.

    My '94 XJ40 blew a head gasket at the end of Aug. 2009 at 96k miles. The reason it took me two weeks to do it because I had time after work but many times it rained in the afternoon (S.W.FL). I completely disassembled the cyl. head, cleaned the valves, installed new valve guide seals. Now at 160k still runs fine.

    Excellent presentation, as to the upper timing chain tensioner. I would point out though that the tensioner shown in the video is the OEM style, and not the "upgraded" version that Jaguar came out with later to quiet/avoid chain rattle on start up. One thing I'm confused about is that two sources (this one included, as well as a long-time Jag tech from back in the '90s) claim that the distributor needs to be removed to r/r the tensioner. However, the Jag T.S.B. for the procedure using the upgraded version does not mention such a step. Also, we have a poster on the Jag forums who did the job and he did not mention having to remove the distributor. ???

      It's been a while, but as I recall to remove the tensioner it is directly in the way. To retract it it isn't necessary to remove it i believe.

    Thankyou for sharing. 2 things i see you can build to expand the audience on your channel. Using your expertise you could exploit the full potential with the AJ6/16 and V12 motors.
    1) everyone around the world is banging on about how good the australian Ford barra 6 is. Essentialy it is an Australian 4 liter cast iron block with an DOHC alloy head pumping out some massive hp numbers with high boost turbo in the custom car seen. I see the AJ6/16 very underated and cheap alternative. Though it has an alloy block, it has cast iron sleaves. It also has superior cooling (just compare the water passages). It would make a great development motor to take it on. There are magazine articles back in the 90’s where people were putting a couple of turbos on this jag unit with great results.
    2) the AJ6/16 motor was a top down design. Meaning, the cylinder head was always designed to bolt straight to the v12 (with the exception of 1 bank needing to be machined in reverse). It never came into fruition in production due to cost and weight. Always nice to flirt with big ideas though 👍

    Please make a video on how to install cylinder liners v12. Maybe there is already such a video. I probably missed it.

    Nice. I'm guessing you put a machinist ruler on the various surfaces and all was reasonably good? Did you hand sand or power sand the surfaces? (Brillo pad on a air die grinder?) Looks like the original tensioner is being used there. Didn't' want to spring for the newer redesigned one?

      Gray scotchbrite on the machined surfaces. I’m not spending any more than we have to on this one just to make sure the rest of the vehicle works as it should. Drivers training could get rough. Machine table works for checking flatness.

    Interesting vlog Bob, are the one time use cylinder head bolts a better option than studs/nuts as used on the 4.2 & 5.3?

    • @thecampchaoschronicles9567
      @thecampchaoschronicles9567  Рік тому

      According to a service bulletin, the bolts can be reused twice. More on that in the next video. I don't like the studs
      only because they're a pain in the neck to replace if necessary.
