The great thing about the transporter is you can do so much with them ,I have a t6.1 204 dsg highline lwb swamper kombi camper from van haven in Dorset, we have swivel front seats 3 rear individual but removable rear seats ,plus a 40 winks bed ,that means we can leave a full queen size bed out all the time and have massive amount of storage space below the bed . You can also go for a full carbon fibre pop top roof ,this seats considerably lower than most pop tops and it's barely noticeable and it means you can still get into most carparks. The Lwb van is a must that extra 50 cms of interior space doesn't sound like much but trust me it is . A dsg gearbox is lovely for long trips as is the higher out put engines, I have a twin turbo 204 bhp t6.1 transporter and its a flying machine. Don't bother with a low spec van get a high line model it will come with most of the stuff your volvo has, my can has Factory LED head lights and on a transporter that is a 100% must have the the stock transporter head lights are shockingly bad .we have discover media system apple car play ,factory sat nav plus camera and 360 parking sensors. My van even has auto park ,heated seats Air con adaptive cruise control and soft closing doors and tailgate. Also a tailgate model is a must this also gives you additional outside covered area .we have a fiamma 45s awning on.the drivers side of the van and an additional remo awning rail on the passenger side of the van. So we can if for a one night or just a day out use the fiamma awning, or for 2 or more nights we can use the inflatable drive away awning on the left hand side of the van. Note buy a kadar strip, this bit of kit makes life so much easier for detaching your drive away awning. Lastly make sure you get the newest van you can afford and make sure its euro 6 .these bloody emissions rules are crippling if you have to pay every time you want to drive your vehicle. Our van is a euro 6.2 class vehicle and isn't subject to any charges just yet, but give them time. I hope this has been of some help ,go to one of the camping and caravan shows before you buy something get a real idea of what's available and how your set up will best work for you .oh and don't forget a diesel heater and to fully insulate and sound deaden your van ,remember it started life out at a commercial vehicle. the stock headlights on the 6.1 are more than adequate i think most people that complain and say they are like candles have never driven one in the dark or had never had an older vw camper.they are very much improved over the T4 that i had for 8 years. i hate traffic so always travel away during the night been to the lake district driving there and back in the dark also wales and devon after reading all the negatives regarding the headlights i was surprised how good they were especially with the cornering fog lights
Thank you for this info, it really has given us something to think about. The fact that we can just shoot off on weekends is very appealing. We are weighing up all are option this month and then looking to take the plunge with what we and the kids decide👍
Love our van, it’s the having all the convenience and comfort of your whole house with you wherever you, never mind the camping and they can also replace your car. I would suggest renting one for a long weekend to check you like it first. Think you will love it but it’s good to check. Also make sure you pick the right layout for you and your family.

Definitely go for a van. And very importantly go for lwb. Not swb. You get an extra 400mm which is very useful. Especially when you pull the bed out. They'll try to sell you a swb. Because they say easier to park. Don't believe it. I have a Renault trafic 2019 lwb premier edition. It's my car & Campervan. And I never have any problems parking. You also get an extra 400mm cupboard which is very useful You'll need a drive away awning. Get sown in groundsheet if you're thinking of sleeping in awning. But possible you wouldn't bother with awning for short break. All sleep in van

We are seriously considering the van, but the one sticking point could be our 11yr old son, not being keen on sharing bed space with his sister...tricky one that we are looking to see how we can overcome it. Still got to check out caravans first though.. look at every option, before taking the plunge👍
Lol, if it was down to me it would be all the way. I am swinging Scott around to an air tent as we speak. He just hates the assembling. As he says, it is wasted drinking and beach time🫣
Ahhh, the thick end of £70k for a van with a tent on the roof. No thanks. Try climbing down from the 'pop top', slipping on the drivers seat and mangling your manhood on the steering wheel in the middle of the night to have a wee in the facilities. That's before you trample all over the kids and dog to open the door out into the rain. And the 'pop top' has all the acoustic blocking of cling film.😢
Hi, yes we were unaware of exactly how expensive they were, so this was an eye opening trip. For us though, having two kids at ages were they bicker quite a bit, is one reason why it is not suitable for us. The tent we have now allows us to keep them separated.. a camper van would not...
